Windows and Linux use different configuration filenames, but the networking and verification process is largely the same.
What you need before installing
A dedicated server is a separate program. It does not run from the same directory as your normal Killing Floor 2 client installation, and installing it into the client directory makes updates and rollback harder. Create a dedicated folder on a machine that can remain online, has a stable private IP address, and is connected by a reliable network connection.

- A Windows or Linux machine with enough free disk space for the server distribution, updates, logs and backups.
- Administrative access to install SteamCMD, create firewall rules and, for an internet server, change router or cloud security-group settings.
- A stable private address for the host, preferably reserved in the router’s DHCP settings. Port-forwarding rules break when the machine receives a different private address.
- The current dedicated-server app ID and installation instructions from the current Tripwire or Valve documentation. The numeric app ID and canonical download command should be checked at the time of installation rather than copied from an old guide.
Keep a copy of configuration files before every major edit. A dated backup lets you restore a known-good server when a typo prevents startup or a game update changes a setting.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line Steam client for downloading dedicated-server files. Install it in its own tools directory, then install Killing Floor 2 into a different server directory. Anonymous login is accepted by the commonly used installation procedure; if the current distribution requires another account method, follow the current official instructions.

Windows installation
- Download and extract SteamCMD into a folder such as
C:SteamCMD. - Create an empty server directory, for example
C:KF2Server. Do not point it at the retail game’s library. - Open Command Prompt and run SteamCMD from its installation folder.
- At the SteamCMD prompt, log in and select the server directory:
login anonymous
force_install_dir C:KF2ServerUse the current Killing Floor 2 dedicated-server app ID in the update command. Because that value is not established by the available documentation, do not rely on a number copied from an older tutorial:
app_update <current KF2 dedicated-server app ID> validate
quitThe angle-bracket value is an instruction to substitute the app ID confirmed in current Tripwire or Valve documentation. SteamCMD will download the server executable, maps and configuration tree into C:KF2Server.
Linux installation
- Install SteamCMD using your distribution’s package method or Valve’s current Linux instructions.
- Create a dedicated account and directory for the game server, such as
/opt/kf2server, rather than running the service asroot. - Run SteamCMD, log in anonymously when permitted, set the installation directory and run the same app-update operation with the current app ID.

quitLinuxGSM’s Killing Floor 2 documentation is an alternative for administrators who want a wrapper that handles installation, start and stop commands, log locations and updates. It identifies UDP 7777 as the default game port. Whether you use LinuxGSM, a shell script or a systemd unit, keep the actual game files and configuration under one clearly documented server directory.
Start the server on each platform
Windows launcher
After SteamCMD finishes, use the batch or launcher file included with the server distribution. The exact filename can change with the distribution, so inspect the downloaded directory rather than assuming that a client executable is the correct one. Start it once before making extensive edits. The first launch creates or completes configuration files and reveals syntax or permission errors in the console and log.

Windows server settings are commonly stored in C:KF2ServerKFGameConfigPCServer-KFGame.ini. Keep the path quoted if you use it in a script, because Windows paths can contain spaces. Run the launcher from the server directory or use absolute paths in a scheduled task.
Linux launcher or service
On Linux, launch the supplied script, a LinuxGSM command or a service definition. Run the first start interactively so you can see missing-library, permission and port-binding errors. Once the server starts correctly, move it under a process supervisor such as systemd or the manager supplied by your chosen wrapper. A supervisor should restart the process after a crash, but it should not hide a configuration error by repeatedly launching a broken process.
Linux deployments use Linux-specific files under KFGame/Config. LinuxGSM references KFGame/Config/LinuxServer-KFEngine.ini for engine and default game-port handling, while current hosting documentation also uses KFGame/Config/LinuxServer-KFGame.ini for game settings. Check which files exist in your installation and edit the file that controls the setting you are changing; do not copy a Windows filename into a Linux deployment.

A server can start normally and still be unreachable if the router or host firewall drops traffic. Add rules at every applicable layer: the game host’s operating-system firewall, a cloud security group if the machine is hosted in a data center, and the internet router’s port-forwarding table.

These are documented defaults, not immutable values. If a launch parameter or configuration file changes the game, query or WebAdmin port, use the active value in every firewall and forwarding rule. A mismatch is a common reason that a server is visible locally but absent from the public browser.
Reserve the host’s private address
- Find the machine’s current private IPv4 address.
- In the router, create a DHCP reservation for that machine’s hardware address, or assign a static address outside the DHCP pool.
- Forward each selected port from the router’s public interface to that private address. Select UDP for 7777, 27015 and 20560, and TCP for 8080.
- Apply the operating-system firewall rules and, for a cloud VM, duplicate them in the provider’s security group.
- Record the chosen ports and address in your server notes so a later update does not silently change the network layout.
Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT or otherwise do not provide a routable public IPv4 address. In that situation, ordinary home-router forwarding cannot expose the server; use a host with a public address, a suitable tunnel that supports game traffic, or managed game-server hosting.
Edit the server identity and gameplay settings
Use the platform-specific INI files under KFGame/Config for the server name, short name, message of the day, difficulty and game mode. On Windows, the commonly used file is PCServer-KFGame.ini. On Linux, use the Linux-named game configuration file supplied by your installation, commonly LinuxServer-KFGame.ini.

- Stop the server cleanly. Editing a file while the process is writing it can lose changes or leave an incomplete file.
- Copy the relevant INI file to a dated backup location.
- Open it with a plain-text editor that does not add rich-text formatting.
- Change one logical group of settings at a time: identity, rules, then administration. Preserve the existing section names and equals-sign syntax.
- Save the file and restart the server. Most settings are read at startup; changing a file without restarting generally does not alter the running match.
- Read the startup log for an unknown-key, parse or permission error before inviting players.
Identity fields
Set the public server name so players can recognize it, a shorter name where the browser or logs use one, and a concise MOTD that states rules, schedule or contact information. Avoid putting passwords or private addresses in the MOTD. If a setting appears in more than one INI file, change the file actually loaded by your launcher and confirm the resulting value in the startup log.

Difficulty and game mode
Choose the difficulty and mode values supported by the installed server build and the comments or examples in its configuration file. Do not paste a value from a different game version without checking the available options. A syntactically valid but unsupported value can make the server fall back to a default, which is easy to mistake for a networking problem.
Enable WebAdmin only when you can secure it
WebAdmin is optional. It provides browser-based administration over the commonly documented TCP port 8080, but opening an administrative interface to the entire internet increases the attack surface.
- Enable WebAdmin in the server configuration only if browser administration is useful to you.
- Set a long, unique administrator password. Do not reuse a Steam, email or operating-system password.
- Allow TCP 8080 through the host firewall only when required. If your router supports source restrictions, permit your own public address or a trusted VPN range instead of every internet address.
- Do not advertise the WebAdmin address in the public server name or MOTD.
- Test login from a trusted network, then confirm that an unauthenticated request cannot administer the server.
- Disable the feature and close the port when you no longer need it.
If you only need occasional administration, a VPN or an SSH tunnel to the host is safer than permanently exposing WebAdmin. Never assume that changing the port number alone provides meaningful protection.
Keep the process running and maintain it
Windows
For a temporary server, launch the supplied batch file in a console window. For regular operation, use a scheduled task or service wrapper configured to start after networking is available and to restart after an unexpected exit. Store logs outside temporary directories and check that the service account can read the server directory and write logs, saves and updates.

Linux
A systemd unit or LinuxGSM service gives you explicit start, stop, restart and status commands. Run the service under the dedicated game-server account, set the working directory to the server root, and make the service wait for network availability. Restrict file permissions so ordinary users cannot edit administrator credentials. Test a controlled restart after every change to the unit or configuration.
Updates and rollback
- Stop the server before updating its files.
- Back up
KFGame/Config, custom maps, scripts and important logs. - Run SteamCMD’s update operation with validation when appropriate.
- Start once in a maintenance window and inspect the log for changed settings or missing dependencies.
- Keep the previous configuration backup until players have completed a successful join test.
Test it in the right order
- Local process test: Start the server on the host and verify that it remains running without bind or parse errors.
- LAN test: From another device on the same network, search for or join the server using its private address where supported. This separates game configuration errors from internet routing problems.
- Firewall test: Temporarily review host-firewall logs or rules if the LAN client cannot connect. Confirm that the protocol is UDP for game traffic; a TCP-only rule will not pass it.
- External test: Use a phone on cellular data, a remote player or another external connection. Do not test only from inside the same LAN, because some routers do not support hairpin NAT.
- Browser and administration test: If WebAdmin is enabled, verify the page from an allowed network and confirm that credentials work, then test that blocked source addresses cannot reach it.
If the process runs but the server is missing from the public browser, check the host firewall, router forwarding, cloud security group, active game and query ports, and the interface to which the server is bound. A successful local launch proves only that the executable can run; it does not prove that internet traffic reaches it.

Neither operating system removes the need to forward ports, secure the host, back up configuration and test from an external network. Choose the platform you can patch and troubleshoot reliably.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, ports, mods, backups and the physical location of the machine. It also makes you responsible for router forwarding, firewall rules, operating-system updates, power failures, public-address changes and 24/7 uptime.
Managed Killing Floor 2 hosting is practical when you cannot forward ports, do not have a routable public address, need a server online while your personal PC is off, or prefer a control panel and provider-maintained network. Before choosing a service, check the actual region, backup policy, update process, mod support, WebAdmin access, player-slot limits and cancellation terms. Common failures and precise fixes

Operational checklist
- Dedicated server files are separate from the retail game installation.
- The current dedicated-server app ID was confirmed from current official documentation.
- The host has a stable private address and adequate permissions.
- UDP 7777, UDP 27015 and, where used, UDP 20560 match the active configuration in router, host and cloud firewalls.
- TCP 8080 is closed unless WebAdmin is required and restricted.
- Windows or Linux configuration files are backed up before editing.
- The server was tested on the LAN and from an external connection.
- A restart, update and restore procedure has been tested before inviting a larger player group.
Following that sequence produces a maintainable Killing Floor 2 server rather than merely a process that launches: the files are isolated, settings are in the correct platform-specific location, network rules match the active ports, administration is protected and reachability has been verified from the same networks your players will use.
