Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) is enabled by default on Rust servers. For a hosted server, change it with the provider’s EAC toggle, the Rust server settings editor, startup arguments, or server.cfg, then restart the server. Keep EAC enabled on any public server: hosting guides warn that disabling security can remove the server from Rust’s in-game public list. Use disabled EAC only when you intentionally run a private, local, or compatible mod-testing server.

What EAC controls on a Rust server
EAC is Rust’s client anti-cheat service. It checks connecting players and works with Facepunch’s enforcement system. EAC is reported as enabled by default on Rust servers, so a normal installation does not require an activation command.

Server configuration determines whether the server advertises itself as secure. The commonly published controls are server.eac, server.secure, and server.encryption. Their exact behavior and accepted values should be checked against the current Rust documentation at wiki.facepunch.com or your host’s current panel. Hosting references disagree about the meaning of some names; in particular, an older convar list describes server.secure as Valve Anti-Cheat rather than EAC.
That uncertainty matters when you are maintaining a live server. Treat the three-command recipe below as the syntax commonly shown by hosting providers, not as a substitute for validating the current Facepunch convar reference.

Choose the configuration method
| Method | Best for | What you do | Restart required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Control-panel toggle | Most hosted servers and administrators who want the fewest syntax errors | Stop the server, switch the Easy Anti-Cheat setting, save, and start it again | Yes |
| Rust server settings editor | Hosts that expose a structured Rust configuration file | Open the Rust Server Settings file in the panel and change the EAC value | Yes |
| Additional startup arguments | Hosts without a dedicated EAC switch, or repeatable deployments | Add the EAC-related arguments to the server’s launch configuration | Yes |
server.cfg |
Operators who keep configuration in a versioned text file | Add one convar per line, save the file, and restart | Yes |
Panel labels and file locations change between hosting companies and Rust server-manager versions. Do not assume that a setting called “secure,” “anti-cheat,” or “encryption” has the same implementation everywhere.
Before changing EAC
- Decide whether the server is public. A public server should retain EAC. Disabling it can prevent the server from appearing in Rust’s public in-game browser.
- Record the current configuration. Copy the existing startup arguments and
server.cfgcontents so you can restore them exactly. - Stop the server cleanly. Editing a file while the process is running can be overwritten when Rust saves its configuration.
- Confirm your access method. You need the host panel’s configuration permissions or file access, and you need the server’s IP address and port if players will connect directly.
- Plan a maintenance window. Every method described here requires a restart before the change is expected to take effect.
Method 1: Use the host control-panel toggle
This is normally the least error-prone option because the panel writes the provider’s preferred configuration format for you.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open your Rust server in the hosting control panel.
- Stop the server and wait until the panel reports that the process has exited.
- Open the Settings, Security, or similarly named configuration tab.
- Locate the Easy Anti-Cheat toggle. Some panels expose a single EAC switch; others place the option in a Rust server settings section.
- Set the toggle to On for a public server or Off only for a private, local, or mod-testing server.
- Save or apply the change.
- Start the server and wait for the normal startup sequence to finish.
If the panel has both an EAC switch and separate secure or encryption switches, do not change the additional switches unless the provider’s current instructions explicitly require it. A combined “security” setting may control public-list advertising as well as anti-cheat behavior.
Method 2: Edit the Rust server settings file
Some providers expose a structured file named Rust Server Settings or a similar label directly in the panel. The file may be presented as a form rather than raw text.
- Stop the server.
- Open the provider’s Rust server settings editor or file manager.
- Make a backup or copy of the current file contents.
- Find the EAC-related entry. It may be labeled
server.eac,server.secure, or simply Easy Anti-Cheat. - Choose the enabled value for a public server, or the disabled value only when that is your deliberate use case.
- Save the file, close the editor, and restart the server.
If the editor rejects a value, restores it after saving, or shows no matching entry, stop rather than adding several similarly named keys at random. Panel implementations differ, and the current Rust wiki or host documentation is the authoritative place to confirm the supported name.

Method 3: Add startup arguments
Hosting guides commonly show the following three arguments for disabling EAC:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
+server.secure 0 +server.eac 0 +server.encryption 0
Add them to the panel’s Additional Startup Arguments field, preserving the plus signs, spaces, and numeric values. Do not put quotation marks around the entire line unless the panel specifically requires quoted arguments.
- Stop the server.
- Open the startup, launch, or command-line settings page.
- Back up the existing argument string.
- Append
+server.secure 0 +server.eac 0 +server.encryption 0to the existing arguments, separated by spaces. - Save the launch configuration.
- Restart the server.
For re-enabling, the same guides say to change the values to 1 or remove the lines:
+server.secure 1 +server.eac 1 +server.encryption 1
Because the published descriptions of these convars are not fully consistent, verify the accepted syntax with the current Rust documentation or your provider before applying it to a production server.
Method 4: Put the commands in server.cfg
If your installation loads a server.cfg file, the commonly cited disabled-EAC form is one command per line:

- Stop the Rust server.
- Open the server’s configuration directory in the host file manager or your administration tool.
- Locate
server.cfg. If it does not exist, use the file-creation option only if your host documents that this file is loaded. - Back up the file before editing.
- Add the three lines without a leading plus sign, keeping each command on its own line.
- Save the file and restart the server.
To restore the enabled state, either remove those lines or change each value to 1, as the hosting instructions describe. Removing an override is often safer when the host supplies a default enabled state, but check the provider’s current configuration rules first.
How to verify the result
Check the server’s listing behavior
An enabled public server should continue to advertise normally. If the server disappears from the in-game public browser after you disabled EAC or another security option, that is an expected trade-off reported by hosting guides rather than proof that the process failed.
Test a direct connection
Players who are allowed to use a non-public server can connect through Rust’s client console:
- Launch Rust and press F1 to open the console.
- Enter
client.connect <IP>:<port>, replacing the placeholders with the server address and port. - Press Enter and wait for the connection attempt.
Direct connection confirms that the server is reachable; it does not prove that every EAC convar was interpreted as intended. Check the server startup log and the host panel’s effective configuration for that.
Check after every restart
- Confirm the panel still shows the selected state.
- Confirm startup arguments were not normalized, truncated, or overwritten.
- Confirm
server.cfgstill contains the intended lines. - Check whether the server appears in the public list when EAC is meant to remain enabled.
Public, private, and modded server decisions
Public community server
Leave EAC enabled. Disabling it can remove the server from the public list, reducing discovery and changing the trust expectations for players. EAC is part of the normal security posture for a public Rust server.

Private event or local test server
Disabling EAC may be appropriate when every player is known and the server is reached by direct address. Tell players that the server may not appear in the public browser and provide the IP address and port.
Modded server
Do not disable EAC merely because you installed server-side plugins. uMod server-side plugins are reported to work with EAC enabled. Only certain client-side modifications may require EAC to be disabled, and those modifications change the trust and public-list trade-offs.
Restoring EAC after testing
Use the same configuration surface that you changed. Turn the panel switch on, set the relevant values to 1, or remove the disabling lines from the startup arguments or server.cfg. Then restart the server and verify that it returns to the public-list behavior expected for an enabled, secure server.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not combine an old disabling line with a new panel toggle unless the host documents the precedence. A startup argument can override a form value, and a file entry can override a default. Keeping one authoritative configuration prevents this kind of conflict.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting configuration problems
The setting changes back after restart
- Check whether the panel regenerates startup arguments from a separate template.
- Check whether you edited a generated file instead of the file Rust actually loads.
- Remove duplicate entries so only one value for each convar remains.
- Stop the server before saving, then start it from the same panel that owns the configuration.
The server is not visible in the public browser
First check whether EAC, secure mode, or encryption was intentionally disabled. Hosting guides warn that disabling security can suppress public-list visibility. If EAC should be on, restore the enabled setting, remove the zero-valued overrides, restart, and allow time for the listing to refresh.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The command appears to do nothing
- Confirm that startup arguments use leading plus signs, while
server.cfglines do not. - Confirm that the file is named exactly
server.cfgand is in the location loaded by your host. - Check the startup log for an unknown or rejected convar.
- Compare the spelling and value with the current Facepunch documentation; convar names and panel labels can change.
Players cannot connect after the change
Test the address and port independently with a direct console connection. If direct connection fails, inspect the server process, port assignment, firewall, and host status. If direct connection works but public discovery does not, treat public-list behavior as a security-setting issue rather than a network failure.
Fixing “EAC: Timed out” on a player’s PC
A client timeout is different from changing EAC on the server. The following repairs are aimed at the player’s Rust installation and local EAC service:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- In Steam, verify Rust’s game files.
- Open Rust’s Easy Anti-Cheat folder and find
EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe. - Run the setup program as Administrator and use its repair option.
- Restart the computer and try Rust again.
- Check firewall and antivirus rules. Add the Rust and EAC components to the relevant exclusions only when you trust the installation and understand the security implications.
If several players time out simultaneously, compare the server’s startup log and host status with these local repairs. A server-side configuration problem and a single player’s damaged EAC service produce different symptoms.
How bans are handled
Facepunch maintains a centralized banning page on its wiki. An administrator guide reports that when EAC catches a player, Facepunch bans the account from every Rust server; individual server owners do not administer the EAC ban itself. Server operators still need their own moderation rules for behavior that EAC does not address, but they should not promise to reverse or selectively apply an EAC enforcement action.
What is and is not established about EAC effectiveness
Facepunch has announced additional EAC efforts targeting recoil cheats, often called scripting, and has described close work with the Epic Games EAC team. That is context for why the service remains enabled on ordinary servers, not a guarantee that every cheat will be detected.
No published, independently verifiable statistic establishing EAC’s effectiveness on Rust is available here. Avoid presenting an unsupported detection rate or claiming that disabling EAC makes a server safe for particular client modifications. The practical, documented choice is operational: retain EAC for public access and use a disabled configuration only in a controlled environment where the loss of public discovery and anti-cheat protection is acceptable.
