The most effective approach is to match the setting to the problem. On a Windows PC or handheld, mark a capped connection as metered, review cellular-app permissions, and use Delivery Optimization for automatic-update bandwidth. Use Power & battery controls for display and background activity. On Xbox consoles, Shutdown (energy saving) greatly reduces electricity while the console is off, but it does not necessarily prevent overnight updates. What should I change first to reduce Game Pass data use?
First decide whether the scarce resource is total bytes, transfer speed, or battery. Metering and cellular permissions address where data may be used; Delivery Optimization addresses how quickly certain automatic transfers run; neither is a universal monthly Game Pass quota. For a capped connection, mark it metered before launching a large download, then avoid starting downloads manually until you are on unmetered Wi-Fi.

How do I mark a Windows connection as metered?
Metering tells Windows to be conservative with some background activity. Microsoft says it can restrict or pause certain Store downloads and other background transfers, but it is not a hard prohibition on every download.
- Open Settings and select Network & internet.
- Open the active connection: Wi-Fi and the connected network, or Ethernet and the connected network.
- Turn on Metered connection.
- Open the Xbox app or Microsoft Store only when you are ready to approve a download. A download you start yourself may still proceed, so cancel or pause it rather than relying on the metered flag.
Use this on a home broadband plan with a monthly cap, a phone hotspot, or public Wi-Fi with a usage limit. When you return to an uncapped connection, turn metering off if you want updates to arrive promptly; delayed updates are the trade-off for conserving data.

How do I stop Game Pass from using mobile data on Windows?
Windows cellular connections are metered by default. On a supported Windows 11 cellular device, review both the conditions that trigger cellular use and the apps allowed to use it; available controls differ by hardware, Windows edition and carrier.
- Go to Settings > Network & internet > Cellular.
- Open Data roaming options and disable roaming when your plan could charge for out-of-network data.
- Check Use cellular whenever Wi-Fi is poor. Turn this off if you would rather lose connectivity than silently fall back to mobile data.
- Open Cellular data and apps, choose which apps can use cellular data, and remove access for the Xbox app, Microsoft Store or other large-download apps when those entries are available.
Microsoft cautions that some installed apps may still use cellular even when they do not appear in the app list. Treat the list as a reduction tool, not proof that every byte is blocked. The cellular controls and their availability are documented by Microsoft.
What does Delivery Optimization actually limit?
Delivery Optimization is useful for controlling Windows’ automatic update traffic, not for imposing a complete Game Pass data cap. Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery Optimization.
Set a transfer rate for automatic downloads
Bandwidth controls can limit how much network capacity automatic update downloads consume. A lower Mbps setting makes eligible transfers take longer; it does not make the update smaller and should not be described as a monthly byte limit.

Control peer-to-peer sharing
Delivery Optimization can share update files with other devices. Restrict sharing to devices on your local network or turn peer sharing off if you do not want uploads to use your connection. Microsoft describes these choices and their scope in its Delivery Optimization guidance.
Know what is excluded
The bandwidth limits do not apply to downloads you manually initiate from the Microsoft Store. That means a Game Pass game that you explicitly start can still consume the connection at the Store’s available rate. Use a metered connection, pause the download, or wait for unmetered Wi-Fi when total data—not merely congestion—is the concern.

How can I reduce battery drain in the Xbox app on a Windows PC or handheld?
Use Windows’ power controls before changing Xbox settings. The relevant labels differ by release: older Windows versions use Battery saver, while Windows 11 version 24H2 and later use Energy Saver.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Enable the available saver mode and set a shorter Screen and sleep timeout for On battery power.
- Open Battery usage to identify whether the Xbox app, a game, the display or another process is consuming power.
- For a supported app, open its background-activity control and choose Power optimized or Never if you accept delayed notifications and updates.
Windows does not expose the same background-activity switch for every installation, and you should not assume that the Xbox PC app always offers it. Restricting background activity is therefore a per-device option with a convenience cost, not a guaranteed Xbox-app feature. Does Xbox Shutdown stop game updates?
No. Xbox’s January 2023 explanation says Shutdown (energy saving) cuts off-state power by up to 20 times compared with Sleep, while still allowing overnight game, app and system updates. It also removes remote wake and can make startup slower.
Choose Shutdown when electricity use while the console is off matters more than instant wake or overnight readiness. Choose Sleep when remote wake and faster resume are worth the additional off-state consumption. Neither mode should be treated as a master switch that prevents updates; the current console interface’s separate automatic-update labels can vary, and an up-to-date support page confirming a universal path was not available.

This comparison concerns the console while it is off, not electricity used during gameplay. It also says nothing about a controller’s rechargeable cells or a phone’s battery.

Does cloud gaming use less data than downloading?
Cloud play eliminates the initial local installation, but it continuously transfers an interactive video stream. It can save local storage and let you start sooner; it is not automatically a lower-gigabyte choice than downloading a game once and replaying it.

Account for current stream quality
Xbox announced streams of up to 1440p with a higher bitrate for Game Pass Ultimate on supported consoles, titles, devices and regions. Higher quality can improve the picture while increasing the amount of video transferred; the announcement does not provide a universal gigabytes-per-hour value or a guaranteed quality-reduction switch.
Xbox also announced that monthly cloud-play allowances are planned for November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium and 5 for Essential. As of October 30, 2026, those limits were not yet in force. They are service playtime allowances, not a mobile carrier’s data allowance, and Xbox estimated that the change would affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers. Check the live terms after launch rather than treating the planned figures as current.

What should I check when downloads or battery drain continue?
- A download ignores metering: check whether you started it manually in the Store or Xbox app. Delivery Optimization limits do not govern that transfer; pause it or disconnect from the capped network.
- Cellular charges still appear: verify roaming, Wi-Fi-fallback and per-app cellular settings, then remember that Microsoft says some apps may use cellular outside the displayed list.
- The handheld still loses power quickly: inspect Battery usage, reduce screen-on time and close the game or launcher that remains active. Do not confuse controller-battery drain with the PC’s battery graph.
- The console downloads while shut down: this is expected under Xbox’s description of Shutdown (energy saving). Select the separate update preference only if your current console interface exposes one; do not assume the power mode itself blocks updates.
- Cloud play consumes more data than expected: count total play hours and account for higher-bitrate or higher-resolution streams. A stream is continuous traffic, unlike a one-time installation.
What settings are not universal?
Windows controls depend on edition, version, device and carrier. The Xbox PC app may not expose a data-quality selector or background switch on every installation. Console automatic-update labels can change with system software, and a Windows data-limit help page does not establish a setting that hard-stops every Game Pass transfer at a chosen gigabyte threshold.

For that reason, use metering and cellular permissions as guardrails, Delivery Optimization as a bandwidth tool, and power settings as battery tools. Treat any control that promises to stop every download or report an exact cloud-stream data rate with skepticism unless Microsoft or Xbox documents it for your device and plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will marking Wi-Fi as metered delete an already downloaded Game Pass game?
No. Metering changes how Windows handles some future background activity; it does not remove installed games or reverse bytes already transferred. A download already in progress may continue until you pause or cancel it.
Can I wake an Xbox remotely after choosing Shutdown (energy saving)?
No. Xbox says remote wake is unavailable while the console is shut down. Sleep preserves that convenience but uses more off-state electricity.
Are cloud-play hours the same as mobile-data gigabytes?
No. A cloud-play allowance counts eligible playtime under a Game Pass plan, while a carrier allowance counts network data. A session can use mobile data regardless of how many cloud-play hours remain.
Why is a controller battery listed separately from console power settings?
A rechargeable controller pack affects how often you charge the controller, not the console’s off-state consumption or a Windows connection’s data use. Xbox says its USB-C-compatible rechargeable pack can charge while you play (Xbox).
Where can I confirm which Xbox titles support cloud play?
Check the title’s current Game Pass listing and the supported-device information in Xbox’s cloud-gaming service. Eligibility can differ by membership, region, device and title, so a local installation may still be required for games without a cloud option.
