Yes, you can use a CRT with a Steam Machine, but not with a simple cable. The Steam Machine provides digital DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 outputs; it has no native VGA, composite, or component socket. A VGA CRT therefore needs an active DisplayPort-to-VGA converter. A CRT television with yellow composite or red/green/blue component inputs needs an HDMI-to-analog downscaler designed for that input type.
The reliable setup is: identify the CRT input, choose a converter that works in the correct direction, connect the Steam Machine directly while testing, and select a resolution and refresh rate that both the converter and CRT document. Steam Support uses 1080p as the Steam Machine’s default game-resolution baseline, but many CRT/converter combinations accept a much narrower set of modes.

Choose the connection path before buying anything
Look at the connector on the CRT, not just the shape of the adapter listing. A 15-pin VGA socket indicates a computer monitor path. A single yellow RCA socket indicates composite video. Red, green and blue RCA sockets indicate component video (YPbPr). These are different signal standards and require different hardware.
| CRT input | Steam Machine output | Required hardware | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15-pin VGA | DisplayPort 1.4 | Active, unidirectional DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter | Passive mechanical plugs do not convert digital DisplayPort into analog VGA. |
| Composite (yellow RCA) | HDMI 2.0 | HDMI-to-composite downscaler | The scaler determines which low-resolution modes and refresh rates are available. |
| Component (YPbPr) | HDMI 2.0 | HDMI-to-component downscaler | Use a model that explicitly supports the television’s component format and intended mode. |
Do not confuse a DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable with a video converter. Valve states that DisplayPort-to-HDMI connections require an active adapter or cable; passive adapters and cables are not supported. That warning concerns a digital-to-digital connection, while VGA and analog television inputs require an additional digital-to-analog conversion step.

What the Steam Machine can output
Valve’s current Steam Machine feature and troubleshooting guide lists DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0. There is no built-in VGA, composite, or component output. Consequently, a CRT cannot be connected directly even if the Steam Machine and display are physically close enough for a cable to reach.
Steam’s verified testing baseline uses a default game resolution of 1080p. That does not mean every CRT or converter can display 1080p. A CRT monitor may report a limited range of horizontal frequencies, vertical refresh rates, or preset timings, and an analog downscaler may expose only the modes it was designed to generate. Select a mode that is documented by the converter and accepted by the CRT rather than forcing 1080p.
Connect a VGA CRT monitor
This is the cleanest CRT setup when the display has a 15-pin VGA input. Use DisplayPort as the source because the required conversion path is readily defined: digital DisplayPort from the Steam Machine to analog VGA at the monitor.
What to buy
- An active DisplayPort-source-to-VGA-display adapter. The direction matters; a VGA-to-DisplayPort capture or conversion device is not interchangeable.
- A DisplayPort cable if the adapter does not include one.
- A VGA cable with a 15-pin plug if the adapter is a socket rather than an attached plug.
- The adapter’s specified USB power lead or external power supply, if its design requires one.
As a specification example, the DP2VGAHD20 datasheet describes a unidirectional DisplayPort-source-to-VGA-display adapter and lists Linux compatibility. Treat those details as checks to make against any model you buy: active conversion, correct direction, operating-system compatibility, and the supported resolution/refresh table.

Installation steps
- Shut down both devices. Turn off the Steam Machine and the CRT monitor before making the connections.
- Connect the digital source. Plug DisplayPort from the Steam Machine into the adapter’s DisplayPort input. Do not use a port labelled VGA input or output in the opposite direction.
- Connect the analog display. Attach the adapter’s VGA connector to the CRT’s 15-pin VGA socket and tighten the retaining screws enough to keep the plug seated.
- Provide adapter power. If the adapter has a USB power lead or separate supply, connect it exactly as its documentation specifies. A converter that is unpowered may look like a dead monitor even when the video cable is correct.
- Select the monitor input. Turn on the CRT and choose its VGA input if it offers more than one input.
- Start the Steam Machine. With the CRT already on, boot the Steam Machine and wait for the display handshake to complete.
- Set a supported mode. In SteamOS display settings, select a resolution and refresh rate listed by both the adapter and the CRT. If the first mode produces no picture or an unstable image, choose a lower documented mode instead of repeatedly forcing the same setting.
Steam Support’s troubleshooting guidance favors a direct connection while diagnosing display problems. For the first test, keep the path to Steam Machine, active adapter, VGA cable, and CRT only.
Connect a CRT television with composite or component
A television without VGA cannot use the DisplayPort-to-VGA route. Its analog input expects a television signal, so use the Steam Machine’s HDMI output and a purpose-built HDMI-to-analog downscaler.
Identify the television input
- Composite: one yellow RCA jack for video, usually accompanied by red and white audio jacks.
- Component: three video RCA jacks, commonly coloured green, blue, and red and labelled Y, Pb, and Pr, with separate audio connections.
Confirm the input labels on the television itself. A converter for composite is not automatically suitable for component, and a component converter is not a substitute for a composite unit.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Installation steps
- Check the converter specification first. It must state HDMI input and the exact analog output type your television accepts. Confirm the supported resolution and refresh modes as well.
- Power off the equipment. Turn off the Steam Machine and television before connecting the scaler.
- Connect HDMI. Run an HDMI cable from the Steam Machine’s HDMI output to the converter’s HDMI input.
- Connect analog video. Attach the converter’s composite or component output to the matching television jacks. Never substitute the green component jack for a yellow composite input unless the converter and television documentation explicitly support that arrangement.
- Connect converter power. Use the supplied power source; HDMI alone may not power an active downscaler.
- Select the television input. Turn on the CRT television and choose the matching AV, composite, or component input.
- Boot and choose a documented mode. Start the Steam Machine, then select a resolution and refresh rate that the scaler lists and the television accepts.
The downscaler, not the Steam Machine by itself, determines which low-resolution output modes are available on this path. A model-specific recommendation requires the television’s input standard and the scaler’s complete specification, so avoid listings that merely promise “HDMI to AV” without stating supported modes.

Set a resolution and refresh rate the CRT can actually display
Modern games commonly begin at 1080p, but a CRT may accept only particular timings. The converter can impose an additional limit: some devices accept a small set of HDMI modes and always output one fixed analog television mode, while others expose several choices. Read the adapter’s input and output tables together with the CRT’s manual or on-screen information.
- Open SteamOS Settings and the Display panel (the wording can vary by SteamOS build).
- Choose the connected display if more than one screen is listed.
- Select a resolution and refresh rate explicitly marked as supported by the converter and CRT.
- Apply the setting and wait for the monitor to resynchronize. Give an older CRT a few seconds before deciding that the mode failed.
- If the screen remains blank or rolls, return to the last working mode or select a lower documented mode.
Do not assume that a CRT’s ability to synchronize to one computer signal means it can accept every signal from the Steam Machine. Horizontal frequency, vertical refresh, interlacing, and the converter’s own scaling rules all affect compatibility.
Buying checklist: compare the whole signal path
When several adapters appear similar, compare these specifications rather than relying on connector photos:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Check | Why it matters | What the listing should say |
|---|---|---|
| CRT input type | VGA, composite, and component use different analog signals. | Exact output connector and signal standard. |
| Source connector | The Steam Machine can feed DisplayPort or HDMI. | DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 input, as appropriate. |
| Active versus passive | Digital-to-analog conversion cannot be done by a passive plug. | Active converter or powered conversion; not “mechanical adapter” alone. |
| Directionality | Many converters work in only one direction. | “DP source to VGA display” or “HDMI input to composite/component output.” |
| Resolution and refresh | The CRT may reject modes that a modern monitor accepts. | Input and output mode tables, including refresh rates. |
| Operating-system compatibility | Detection and mode negotiation can vary by hardware. | Linux or SteamOS compatibility where documented. |
| Power requirement | An unpowered scaler or adapter will not convert a signal. | USB power, external supply, or a clear bus-powered specification. |
| Audio handling | VGA carries video only, and analog TV paths may separate audio. | Whether audio is passed through, broken out, or requires a separate path. |
Troubleshoot a blank, flickering, or unstable picture
No signal or “input not found”
- Verify that the CRT is powered on and that its selected input matches the connected socket.
- Reseat the DisplayPort or HDMI plug at the Steam Machine and the converter, then reseat the VGA, composite, or component cable at the CRT.
- Test another cable if one is available; a cable fault can look identical to a converter fault.
- Remove docks, AV receivers, switches, soundbars, and extension chains. Connect the Steam Machine directly to the adapter and CRT while diagnosing.
- Confirm that the adapter is active and powered. A passive DisplayPort-to-VGA or HDMI-to-VGA plug cannot perform the required digital-to-analog conversion.
The picture appears briefly, then disappears
This usually indicates an unsupported mode or an unstable handshake. Return to SteamOS display settings and choose a lower resolution or refresh rate documented by the converter and CRT. Power-cycle the CRT and converter after applying the change, then test the direct path again.

- EASY TO USE: With no software or drivers required, the DP to VGA video converter cable/cord works with any OS including macOS, Windows & Ubuntu | DP Source to VGA Monitor/Display/Projector| DisplayPort Male to VGA Male Cable
The image rolls, flickers, or is badly distorted
Check the CRT’s accepted refresh range and the converter’s output mode. A mode can be numerically close to a supported setting yet use a different timing the CRT cannot lock to. Try the next lower supported refresh rate, then a lower resolution. Do not continue using a mode that causes severe instability.
SteamOS does not list the CRT correctly
Converters do not always pass complete display-identification data. Connect the Steam Machine directly to the converter/display path, reboot with the CRT already on, and select a mode manually if SteamOS offers one. Testing the adapter with another display can help separate a SteamOS negotiation issue from a failed converter.
Plan audio separately
VGA is a video-only connection. A DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter therefore does not, by itself, deliver sound to the CRT monitor. Composite and component televisions also use separate audio connections, although some HDMI-to-analog scalers include an audio breakout or pass audio to dedicated outputs. Check the converter’s audio specification before buying and arrange a separate, supported audio route when the display path does not carry it.
What a successful setup looks like
For a VGA CRT monitor, the finished chain is:
Steam Machine DisplayPort → active DP-to-VGA converter → VGA cable/plug → CRT VGA input.

For a composite or component CRT television, it is:
Steam Machine HDMI → powered HDMI-to-composite or HDMI-to-component downscaler → matching analog TV input.
In both cases, the decisive checks are the CRT’s input standard, the converter’s direction and power, and a resolution/refresh combination documented for that exact path. Start with a direct connection and a conservative supported mode; add switches, receivers, or other accessories only after the basic display works.
