Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe connection depends on which Astro A20 you own. The A20 Gen 2 uses its USB transmitter in Xbox mode on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The original A20 setup for Xbox One uses USB power for the transmitter plus an optical audio cable. Do not follow the older optical instructions for an A20 Gen 2 unless Logitech’s documentation for your exact model specifically says to do so.
What you need
- An Xbox-compatible A20 headset and its matching wireless transmitter.
- For A20 Gen 2: the transmitter’s USB cable and a free USB-A port on the Xbox.
- For the original A20 on Xbox One: the transmitter’s USB power cable and an optical cable.
The transmitter is not optional: it provides the wireless connection between the A20 and Xbox. The A20 is not set up as a normal Bluetooth headset through Xbox Bluetooth settings. A PC-only transmitter or a replacement transmitter identified only as “A20” may not be suitable; match the exact generation and Xbox compatibility.
Connect an A20 Gen 2 to Xbox Series X|S
Logitech’s current A20 Gen 2 Xbox Series X|S instructions specify a USB connection and Xbox mode.
- Turn off the Xbox before rearranging cables.
- Connect the A20 Gen 2 transmitter directly to a USB-A port on the Xbox.
- Press the transmitter’s mode button until its indicator turns green. This indicates Xbox mode in Logitech’s guidance.
- Turn on the A20 headset.
- Wait for Xbox to recognize the USB headset and complete any USB-headset setup prompt. If no prompt appears, check the console’s current audio settings to confirm the headset or transmitter is selected.
- Open a game or play a system sound, then join an Xbox party to test game audio and the microphone separately.
You do not need to search for an optical port on Xbox Series X|S for this Gen 2 setup. The current instructions use USB.

Connect an A20 Gen 2 to Xbox One
The current A20 Gen 2 Xbox One instructions use the same basic process.
- Connect the transmitter to a USB-A port on the Xbox One.
- Press the transmitter mode button until the indicator is green, showing Xbox mode.
- Turn on the headset.
- Follow the Xbox USB-headset setup instructions or verify the device in the console’s audio settings.
- Test game sound, then test the microphone in an Xbox party.
For a first test, leave the headset volume and game/voice balance controls near the middle. This is a troubleshooting starting point, not a required permanent setting.
Connect the original A20 to Xbox One with optical audio
Older A20 Xbox One documentation describes a different wiring method. Use this section only when your transmitter is the older Xbox-compatible model with an optical input.
Xbox One USB port → transmitter USB power
Xbox One optical output → transmitter Optical In
- Turn off the Xbox One before connecting the cables.
- Connect the transmitter’s USB cable to the Xbox One for power.
- Connect the optical cable from the Xbox One’s optical output to the transmitter’s port labeled Optical In.
- Start the Xbox One and wait for the Home screen. Make sure the controller is powered on.
- If your setup includes Kinect, disable the Kinect microphone as directed in the older setup documentation.
- Open the Xbox display and sound settings. Menu labels can vary slightly after console updates.
- Set HDMI audio to Stereo Uncompressed.
- Set Optical audio to Stereo Uncompressed.
- Turn on the A20 and confirm that it is paired with the transmitter.
- Set the game/voice balance around the center, or 50/50, before adjusting it to taste.
The optical cable must run from the Xbox One’s output to the transmitter’s Optical In port. Reseat both ends if the transmitter is powered but no game audio arrives.

How to select Xbox mode
Use the transmitter’s mode control rather than trying to pair the headset from Xbox Bluetooth settings. On A20 Gen 2, press the mode button until the light is green. Older transmitters may have a side switch labeled Console and PC; select Console.
Logitech’s troubleshooting guidance describes green as the console/Xbox state and white as PC mode for the applicable transmitter. LED behavior can vary by generation, so use the labels and instructions for your exact transmitter. A white light may indicate PC mode rather than a hardware failure.
Test game audio, party chat, and the microphone
- Play a system sound or enter a game to confirm game audio.
- Join an Xbox party and ask another player whether they can hear you.
- Check that the microphone is not muted by the headset’s flip-to-mute mechanism, if your model has one.
- Use the main volume wheel for overall loudness.
- Use the game/voice balance control to change the relative levels of game sound and chat. It is not the same as the main volume control.
Test game audio and outgoing voice independently. A headset can produce game sound while its microphone is muted, in the wrong console mode, or not recognized as the Xbox voice source.
Fix common Astro A20 Xbox problems
No sound at all
- Confirm the transmitter is in Xbox/Console mode and, where applicable, shows green.
- Disconnect and reconnect the transmitter directly to the Xbox.
- Try another USB port. Logitech specifically recommends changing USB ports when troubleshooting Xbox voice problems.
- Make sure the headset is powered on and charged.
- Return the volume and game/voice balance controls to the middle.
- Confirm the headset and transmitter are paired.
- If you have an older A20 on Xbox One, reseat the optical cable and check both Stereo Uncompressed settings.
Game audio works, but party chat does not
- Switch the transmitter from PC mode to Xbox/Console mode.
- Try a different Xbox USB port and reconnect the transmitter securely.
- Check that Xbox recognizes the transmitter as the voice-audio source.
- Test in an Xbox party rather than relying only on a game’s voice-chat indicator.
- Check the flip-to-mute microphone and move the game/voice balance back toward the center.
See Logitech’s A20 outgoing-voice troubleshooting guide for the manufacturer’s USB-port and voice-source checks.

Friends cannot hear me, but I can hear them
- Verify Xbox/Console mode.
- Try another USB port.
- Check Xbox’s recognized voice-audio source.
- Reseat the transmitter connection and confirm the microphone is not muted.
- Test the headset on a PC, if available, to see whether the problem follows the headset and transmitter rather than the Xbox.
The game/voice balance is wrong
Move the balance control toward the center, then adjust it while game audio and party chat are both active. Moving it toward game audio can make chat seem missing; moving it toward voice can make the game seem unusually quiet. There is no single correct position.
The transmitter is not detected
- Connect it directly to the Xbox, not through an unverified hub or extension.
- Try every available USB port.
- Fully boot the Xbox, then power-cycle the console and headset.
- Confirm that the transmitter is the Xbox-compatible unit for your A20 generation.
- Use the cable-sync procedure if the headset and transmitter appear unsynchronized.
- If it remains undetected across multiple ports or compatible devices, contact Astro/Logitech support.
The headset and transmitter will not pair
As a synchronization and recovery step, connect the headset to the transmitter with the appropriate micro-USB cable. Logitech’s troubleshooting material says the transmitter LEDs blink while the headset is connected and syncing or charging. Do not use an exact button-hold sequence unless it is verified for your specific A20 generation.
Optical audio does not work on Xbox One
- Confirm you have the original/older A20 setup, not an A20 Gen 2 that follows the USB-only instructions.
- Connect the cable to the Xbox One optical output and the transmitter’s Optical In.
- Reseat both ends and inspect the cable for damage.
- Set HDMI audio and optical audio to Stereo Uncompressed.
- Confirm the transmitter has USB power and is in Console mode.

Older Xbox One documentation tells users to check firmware and update through ASTRO Command Center on a PC. However, Logitech’s current support notices also say that the Firmware Update Tool is no longer supported or maintained. The available documentation does not establish that Logi Options+ supports every Astro A20 generation or every A20 transmitter.

If your A20 has a connection or compatibility problem, check Logitech/Astro’s current support instructions for the exact headset and transmitter generation. Do not assume that an old ASTRO Command Center workflow, Firmware Update Tool, firmware number, or unofficial download is still supported.
When a replacement is the better fix
If the transmitter is missing or defective, a generic Bluetooth adapter is not a like-for-like solution for the documented Xbox setup. A replacement transmitter should be matched by exact A20 generation and Xbox compatibility. Likewise, an optical-only accessory is not the relevant solution for an A20 Gen 2 on Xbox Series X|S, while an older Xbox One A20 may need both its optical and USB connections.
Contact support when the transmitter fails across multiple Xbox USB ports and another compatible device, the headset will not synchronize after cable testing, or the hardware is physically damaged. When buying replacement hardware, verify the complete model—not merely the “A20” name.
