The reliable order is: connect the PS5 to the display, attach accessories to the correct USB port, connect the AC power cable, then pair each wireless device. Pair the first DualSense with a USB cable and the PS button; use SuperSpeed USB for HD Camera and USB extended storage; and use the included PlayStation Link adapter for PULSE Elite or PULSE Explore. A standards-compliant cable and the correct rest-mode power setting resolve most charging and pairing problems.
What to prepare before switching on the PS5
Gather the PS5 console, display cable, AC power cable, the DualSense wireless controller, its included USB cable, and any accessory-specific cables or adapters. Keep the manual for each exact accessory nearby. Official accessories can have different connection methods, and a model-specific manual is the authority for firmware behavior, menus and regional power information.

Do the physical connections before plugging the PS5 AC power cord into an electricity supply. Connect the console to the display first, then attach accessories that need a wired connection or a USB adapter. This order gives you access to the on-screen setup as soon as the console starts and avoids moving cables around while it is powering up.

Understand the PS5 USB ports before plugging in accessories
PS5 consoles provide four USB ports with different speeds. The port that works for charging or a simple adapter is not automatically the port required for high-bandwidth accessories. Use the class Sony specifies for each device, and check the labels on your console rather than relying on a cable’s shape alone.
| Accessory or use | Required connection | Practical instruction |
|---|---|---|
| USB extended storage | SuperSpeed USB port | Connect the storage device to a SuperSpeed port. If the PS5 does not recognize it, move it to another port in that class before troubleshooting the drive. |
| HD Camera or PlayStation Camera with adapter | SuperSpeed USB port | Use a SuperSpeed port. A slower port can prevent recognition even when the connector physically fits. |
| PS VR2 | Front SuperSpeed USB-C port | Use the front SuperSpeed USB-C connection specified for the headset system. |
| Wireless-headset adapter | Any PS5 USB port | Insert the adapter into a free USB port, then follow the headset’s pairing procedure. |
| Officially licensed specialty peripheral | Manufacturer’s stated port | Use the port recommendation in that product’s instructions; do not infer requirements from another accessory. |
USB port speed and connector shape are different properties. A USB-C plug describes the shape of the plug, while SuperSpeed describes the port’s data capability. Always match the accessory’s requirement to the port specification.
Pair the first DualSense controller
The first controller is paired over USB. Wireless pairing will not replace this initial cable step when the console has not yet associated a controller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Turn on the PS5 using the console’s power button.
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with the included USB cable. If that cable is unavailable, use a cable that complies with USB standards; some cables do not support the functions the controller needs.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Watch the light bar. It blinks while pairing, and the player indicator lights when the pairing is complete.
- After the controller has enough battery, disconnect the USB cable for wireless play.
A DualSense can be paired with only one PS5 console at a time. If you take it to a different PS5, connect it to that console with a compliant USB cable and press PS again. Repeat this process whenever you change the console with which the controller is associated.
Confirm that the pairing worked
Use the newly paired controller to move through the home screen. A lit player indicator confirms the console has assigned the controller. If the light bar continues blinking and the menus do not respond, treat it as a failed pairing and use the cable checks in the troubleshooting section below.

Pair a second DualSense wirelessly
After one controller is working, it can open the Bluetooth-accessory menu for another controller. The second controller must be put into pairing mode manually.
- With controller 1, open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- On controller 2, press and hold Create + PS at the same time.
- Keep holding until the second controller’s light bar begins to blink.
- When the controller appears in the Bluetooth Accessories list, select it on screen with controller 1.
- Wait for the light and player indicator to settle, then test both controllers in a game or the home screen.
If the second controller is already associated with another PS5, it may need to be connected by USB to the new console first. Pairing is console-specific, so a controller that works wirelessly in one room may still require this procedure after being moved to a different PS5.

Charge a DualSense correctly
Connect the controller to the PS5 with the included cable or another USB-standard-compliant cable. While the PS5 is in use, or when it is in rest mode with USB power enabled, the controller slowly blinks orange while charging. Sony’s DualSense instruction manual states: When charging is complete, the light bar turns off.
Enable charging during rest mode
Rest-mode charging is not automatic unless the console is configured to supply USB power. Before relying on it, open the PS5’s rest-mode settings and enable the option that supplies power to USB ports. The exact wording can vary with the console’s software, so use the current on-console User’s Guide if the label is not obvious. Then connect the controller and put the PS5 into rest mode.
When a cable charges one device but not the controller
Some USB cables carry power but do not provide the data connection needed for pairing or reliable controller operation. Reconnect with the included cable or a known-good cable that complies with USB standards. If the light does not blink orange, try another PS5 USB port and check that the console is on or configured to provide power in rest mode. A light that turns off indicates charging has completed; it is not evidence of a fault by itself.

Connect a wireless headset
Most PS5 wireless headsets that use a USB adapter follow the same broad sequence: charge the headset with its supplied USB cable, insert the adapter into the console, power on the headset, and wait for the headset indicator to become solid blue. The adapter may use any PS5 USB port unless the headset’s own instructions specify otherwise.
- Charge the headset using the supplied charging cable.
- Insert its wireless adapter into a PS5 USB port.
- Turn on the headset.
- Wait for the headset’s blue indicator to become solid, indicating that the wireless link has completed.
- Play a sound and check that the headset, rather than the display speakers, is receiving audio.
If the headset has a separate mute, volume or chat-balance control, adjust those on the headset after the wireless indicator becomes solid. Do not diagnose an audio problem before confirming that the adapter and headset have actually linked.
Set up PULSE Elite with PlayStation Link
PULSE Elite uses the included PlayStation Link USB adapter. Insert that adapter into a PS5 USB Type-A port, then press the PlayStation Link button on the headset. The expected completed state is a solid blue indicator on the headset and a solid white indicator on the adapter.
- Charge the PULSE Elite with its supplied USB cable.
- Insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into a PS5 USB Type-A port.
- Press the headset’s PlayStation Link button.
- Wait for the headset indicator to turn solid blue and the adapter indicator to turn solid white.
- Test game audio and voice chat before putting the headset into regular use.
If either indicator remains in a blinking or unlit state, reseat the adapter, confirm the headset has charge, and repeat the button sequence. The adapter is the radio link for this setup; pairing the headset as though it were a generic Bluetooth device is not the procedure described for this model.
Set up PULSE Explore earbuds
PULSE Explore also uses a PlayStation Link USB adapter, but the order matters because the earbuds begin in their charging case.

- Remove both earbuds from the case.
- Wait for the adapter indicator to become solid white, which indicates the connection is complete.
- Play a sound in the PS5 to verify that both earbuds are active.
If the adapter does not show a solid white indicator, put the earbuds back in the case, check their charge, reseat the adapter, and repeat the sequence. Keeping both earbuds in the case while inserting the adapter is part of the model-specific setup and should not be skipped.
Connect the camera, storage and other official accessories
HD Camera or PlayStation Camera with adapter
Connect an HD Camera, or a PlayStation Camera used with its adapter, to a SuperSpeed USB port. The camera can be physically connected to a different port, but the PS5 may not recognize it there. If the camera is missing from the relevant game or system feature, move it to a SuperSpeed port before replacing cables or changing software settings.
USB extended storage
Attach USB extended storage to a SuperSpeed USB port. Once connected, allow the PS5 to identify and configure it through the on-screen storage prompts. If it is not recognized, disconnect it safely, move it to another SuperSpeed port, and check the drive’s own instructions. A port mismatch is the first check because the PS5’s USB ports do not all provide the same speed.
PS VR2
Use the front SuperSpeed USB-C port specified for PS VR2. Make sure the connector is fully seated and avoid forcing a USB-C plug at an angle. For setup screens, follow the current on-console User’s Guide and the manual for the exact headset package.
Media Remote, Disc Drive, Vertical Stand and charging accessories
These products have their own official manuals. The official manuals index covers the DualSense Charging Station, HD Camera, Media Remote, Disc Drive, Vertical Stand, PlayStation Link USB Adapter, PULSE Elite wireless charging hanger and other PS5 accessories. Troubleshoot pairing, charging and recognition failures
The first DualSense will not pair
- Turn the PS5 fully on, rather than leaving it in rest mode.
- Reconnect the controller with the included cable or a known-good USB-standard-compliant cable.
- Press the PS button after the cable is connected.
- Try another PS5 USB port if there is no light response.
- Allow the controller to charge briefly, then press PS again.
If the controller was last used with another PS5, repeat the wired pairing process; one DualSense cannot remain paired to two PS5 consoles simultaneously.
The controller charges but cannot pair
A power-only cable can make the battery indicator respond without providing the data path required for pairing. Replace it with the included cable or another cable that complies with USB standards. Confirm the PS5 is on, press PS, and watch for the blinking light bar followed by the player indicator.
The controller will not charge in rest mode
Check the PS5 setting that supplies power to USB ports during rest mode. If that option is disabled, the console may not charge the controller while resting. Use the on-console User’s Guide for the current menu wording, then reconnect the cable and put the PS5 into rest mode.
Recommended Free Tools
A second controller is absent from Bluetooth Accessories
Open the menu with controller 1, then hold Create + PS on controller 2 until its light bar blinks. Keep the second controller close to the console and wait for it to appear before selecting it. If it was paired to a different PS5, connect it by USB to the new console first and press PS.
The camera or storage device is not recognized
Move the device to a SuperSpeed USB port. HD Camera, PlayStation Camera with adapter and USB extended storage all require that port class. After moving it, disconnect and reconnect the accessory and allow the PS5 to scan it again. If recognition still fails, consult the exact accessory manual for compatibility and formatting requirements rather than trying an arbitrary slower port.
A wireless headset has no link
- Reseat the USB adapter.
- Charge the headset or earbuds with the supplied cable or case.
- Power the headset on.
- Repeat the model-specific pairing sequence.
- For PULSE Elite, verify solid blue on the headset and solid white on the adapter.
- For PULSE Explore, insert the adapter while both earbuds are in the case, then remove both earbuds and wait for solid white on the adapter.
Final connection check
Before starting a game, confirm each device’s physical and wireless state once:
- The PS5 displays an image and has completed network setup if online features are needed.
- The primary DualSense responds to the home screen and its player indicator is lit.
- Any additional DualSense appears under Bluetooth Accessories and responds independently.
- A charging controller shows the expected orange blink, and its light bar turns off when charging is complete.
- HD Camera and USB extended storage are connected to SuperSpeed USB.
- PS VR2 is connected to the front SuperSpeed USB-C port.
- The headset adapter is seated, the headset is charged, and the relevant indicator is solid.
- Game audio and voice chat come through the intended headset or earbuds.
For model-specific menus, firmware behavior and regional power details, use the current PS5 User’s Guide together with the manual for the exact accessory. That combination is more reliable than assuming two accessories with similar plugs use the same setup.
