A PlayStation 5 can use up to four controllers at the same time. Pair the first DualSense with a USB cable, then pair controllers two, three, and four from Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories. For each additional controller, disconnect its USB cable, hold Create + PS until the light bar flashes, and select it on the PS5. Finally, press the PS button on each controller to assign player numbers. Four connected controllers do not guarantee four-player gaming: the game itself must support four local players.
What you need before connecting four controllers
The PS5’s four-controller limit is a console capability, not a promise that every game accepts four local participants. Before pairing, check these practical requirements:

- A PS5 turned on and showing its home screen.
- Four compatible controllers. DualSense wireless controllers are the simplest choice for a current PS5 setup.
- A USB cable for the first controller. A suitable USB-C data/charging cable is needed for the initial wired pairing; a charge-only cable may not establish the connection.
- Charged batteries if you plan to use wireless play. A controller can also remain connected by USB when its battery is low or wireless pairing is unreliable.
- A game whose own player-count information explicitly includes local multiplayer for the number of people you want to play.
Sony’s DualSense support documentation states that a PS5 can use up to four controllers simultaneously and that a controller must be paired with the console before use. The steps below apply the same pairing process to controllers two through four.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
- Turn on the PS5 and wait for the home screen.
- Connect the first DualSense controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button in the center of the controller.
- Wait for the light bar to blink and then for the player indicator to light. The controller is paired when the PS5 accepts it as an active controller.
Once this controller works, keep it available as controller 1. You will use it to navigate the Bluetooth Accessories menu while pairing the remaining controllers.
Pair controller 2, 3, and 4 wirelessly
Each additional controller is paired from the PS5’s Bluetooth device list. Perform the complete sequence once for controller 2, then repeat it for controller 3 and controller 4.
- Using controller 1, open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Accessories.
- Select General.
- Select Bluetooth Accessories. Leave this screen open while you put the next controller into pairing mode.
- On the controller you are adding, make sure its player indicator is off.
- Disconnect that controller’s USB cable. Sony’s pairing instructions specifically call for the cable to be disconnected before wireless pairing.
- Hold the controller’s Create button and PS button at the same time.
- Keep holding both buttons until the light bar begins blinking. The blinking light indicates pairing mode.
- Look at the Bluetooth Accessories list on the PS5 and select the controller that appears.
- Wait for the PS5 to complete the connection, then press the PS button on that controller if the console asks you to identify or assign a user.
Repeat steps 5 through 10 for the third controller and again for the fourth. Do not put two unpaired controllers into pairing mode at the same time; pairing one at a time makes it clear which device you selected.
Assign player numbers and confirm all four connections
Pairing and player assignment are separate actions. After each controller is connected, press its PS button. The PS5 assigns a player number, and the controller’s player indicator shows which controller is which.

A quick confirmation routine prevents confusion when the game starts:
- Press PS on controller 1 and note its player indicator.
- Press PS on controller 2 and note its indicator.
- Repeat for controllers 3 and 4.
- Move a thumbstick on each controller one at a time to verify that the expected controller responds.
- Leave all four controllers awake while launching the game.
If a controller does not respond, return to Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories and check whether it appears in the device list. A controller can be paired with the console yet not be assigned to the player you expected until its PS button is pressed.
Start a game that supports four local players
Open the game’s own information page, box details, or in-game multiplayer menu and verify its local player count. The PS5 can maintain four controller connections, but a title may support only one, two, or another number of local players. Some games also limit four-player action to a particular mode, map, or split-screen option.

- Feel you in-game actions and environement simulated through haptic feedback
- Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone
- Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Whether the game lists local multiplayer, couch co-op, or a similar offline mode.
- The maximum number of local players for the specific PS5 version, not just the series or an online mode.
- Whether every participant must press a button on a character-select or “join” screen.
- Whether the game requires separate profiles, guest access, or a particular user assignment.
- Whether local players can use mixed controller types, if you are not using four DualSense controllers.
Connect and assign the controllers before entering the game’s multiplayer screen. If the title still shows fewer slots, that is normally a game-design limit rather than a PS5 pairing failure.
Use USB wired mode when wireless pairing is inconvenient
DualSense controllers can operate wirelessly or through a wired USB connection. Wired mode is useful when a battery is low, when a controller will not appear in the Bluetooth list, or when you want to avoid wireless interference during setup.
Wired setup for a controller that is already paired
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
- Keep the cable connected while playing if you want the controller to remain in wired mode or charge during use.
Wired fallback after a failed wireless attempt
- Connect the problem controller to the PS5 with USB.
- Press PS and wait for the console to recognize it.
- If the controller works by cable, leave it wired for the session or disconnect it and retry wireless pairing from the Bluetooth Accessories screen.
For wireless pairing, disconnect the cable first. Leaving it attached can prevent the controller from entering the intended wireless-discovery state.
Troubleshoot a controller that does not appear
The controller is not listed in Bluetooth Accessories
- Confirm that the controller’s player indicator is off.
- Disconnect its USB cable.
- Hold Create + PS again until the light bar blinks.
- Reopen or remain on Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- Select the controller as soon as it appears.
Sony’s instructions specifically identify the indicator-off condition, cable disconnection, and the Create-plus-PS button combination as part of wireless pairing. Repeating that sequence usually resolves a controller that was not placed in pairing mode correctly.

The light bar never starts blinking
Release both buttons, then hold Create and PS together again. Make sure you are pressing Create, not the touchpad, and hold the buttons long enough for the light bar to enter its flashing state. If the battery may be empty, connect the controller by USB and press PS first; a wired connection is the recommended fallback when power is low.
The controller appears, but the wrong player moves
Press PS on every controller and use the player indicators to identify them. Assignments can be clarified from the game’s join screen by having each person press a button on the controller they intend to use. If necessary, close the game, confirm the four indicators with the PS5 home screen, and then launch the game again.
Only two players can join the game
First verify that all four controllers respond on the PS5 home screen. If they do, consult the game’s stated local-player count and mode requirements. The console’s four-controller support does not expand a game’s built-in local-player limit.

Wireless versus wired: which setup should you use?
| Setup | Best when | What to do | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless DualSense | You want four people seated away from the console with no cables across the room. | Pair each controller in Bluetooth Accessories and press PS to assign its player number. | Each controller needs sufficient battery charge, and a failed pairing attempt requires repeating the discovery sequence. |
| USB wired | A battery is low, wireless discovery fails, or you want the most direct fallback. | Connect the controller by USB and press PS; leave the cable connected while playing. | Cables can restrict seating distance and require enough suitable USB cables for the controllers you keep wired. |
| Mixed setup | Some controllers are charged while another needs a cable. | Use wireless for the ready controllers and USB for the one that needs power or a reliable connection. | Players have different cable and seating constraints, so label or identify the wired controller before starting. |
The PS5 can use four controllers at once regardless of whether your chosen arrangement is all-wireless, all-wired, or mixed. The practical decision is battery condition, cable availability, room layout, and the game’s actual local-player support.
Controller compatibility notes
DualSense is the straightforward default for a current PS5 multiplayer setup because the pairing instructions and console behavior are documented for it. DUALSHOCK 4 pairing for PS5 use is also documented, but compatibility can vary by game and feature. A controller may connect to the console while a particular PS5 title restricts which controller types can be used.
If you combine controller types, test the exact game before the session. Confirm that every controller can navigate the game’s menus and join its local mode; do not assume that a controller recognized by the PS5 home screen will be accepted for every PS5 game feature.

What the four-controller limit does—and does not—mean
“Up to four controllers” describes how many controllers the PS5 can use at the same time. It does not mean four people can join every game, that every mode supports four players, or that four controllers will automatically receive the correct in-game slots. Pairing establishes communication with the console; player assignment identifies who is using each controller; the game decides how many local participants it permits.
Separating those three stages makes diagnosis straightforward. If a controller is missing from Bluetooth Accessories, the issue is pairing. If all controllers are visible but an indicator or user assignment is unexpected, the issue is player assignment. If all four work on the PS5 home screen but the game offers fewer slots, the game’s local-multiplayer rules are the limiting factor.
