Yes—PlayStation PULSE Explore wireless earbuds can connect directly to a compatible phone or tablet over Bluetooth. Turn on Bluetooth, place both earbuds in their charging case, hold the case’s PlayStation Link button for about eight seconds until the indicator rapidly blinks blue, then choose PULSE Explore in the phone’s Bluetooth list. A solid-blue indicator confirms the connection.
This procedure is for PULSE Explore. PlayStation does not state that every PlayStation headset or earbud uses the same pairing sequence.

Yes. PULSE Explore has a direct Bluetooth connection for compatible mobile phones and tablets, so the PlayStation Link USB adapter is not required for this setup. The adapter matters when you also want a PlayStation Link connection on a PS5, PC or Mac.
PlayStation Support describes the prerequisite plainly: “You first need to pair your earbuds to your mobile device to set up a Bluetooth connection.” Your phone must support Bluetooth, and PlayStation cautions that compatibility is not guaranteed for every mobile device.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
What do I need before pairing?
Have the following ready before you start:
- Both PULSE Explore earbuds in the charging case.
- A phone or tablet with Bluetooth enabled.
- The earbuds and phone close enough to maintain a normal Bluetooth connection while you select the device.
- Up to 30 seconds available to choose PULSE Explore after the case enters pairing mode.
The earbuds should remain docked in the case while you start pairing mode. If the phone does not connect during the documented pairing-search period, the earbuds switch off and you must start the button sequence again.
What equipment is and is not required?
The phone pairing itself needs only a Bluetooth-capable phone or tablet and the PULSE Explore case with both earbuds docked. The PlayStation Link USB adapter is not an extra requirement, a special phone cable or a substitute for Bluetooth pairing. It is relevant when you want the earbuds to use PlayStation Link with supported PS5, PC or Mac equipment.
This distinction can prevent an unnecessary purchase. If your goal is phone audio only, first try the direct Bluetooth procedure. Consider the PlayStation Link USB adapter only when you also need that separate wireless link for compatible console or computer hardware.
How do I connect PULSE Explore to my phone?
Use the case button, not the earbud volume controls, to put PULSE Explore into Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone. Go to the phone’s Settings app, open the Bluetooth section and switch Bluetooth on. Leave the device list visible so you can select the earbuds as soon as they appear.
- Dock both earbuds. Put the left and right PULSE Explore earbuds into the charging case. Keep the lid and case positioned so you can see the case indicator.
- Enter pairing mode. Press and hold the PlayStation Link button on the case for approximately eight seconds. Release it when the case indicator quickly blinks blue. That rapidly blinking blue light is the pairing-mode signal.
- Select the earbuds. In the phone’s available Bluetooth-device list, tap PULSE Explore. If the phone asks you to confirm the pairing request, accept it.
- Check the indicator. The case indicator changes to solid blue after the connection succeeds. The phone should also show PULSE Explore as connected or paired.
The earbuds stay in pairing mode for up to 30 seconds. If you do not select them before that window closes, they turn off. Repeat the approximately eight-second hold on the case button to try again.
How can I tell whether the Bluetooth connection worked?
Use both the phone’s status and the case light. The phone should list PULSE Explore as connected for media audio, while the case indicator should be solid blue. A rapidly blinking blue light means the earbuds are still waiting for a device; it is not the successful-connection state.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePlay a short piece of audio only after the phone shows the connection. If sound does not come from the earbuds, open the phone’s audio-output selector and choose PULSE Explore rather than the phone speaker or another paired accessory.
Can I use PULSE Explore with a phone and a PS5 at the same time?
Yes, Bluetooth and PlayStation Link can be active together when the previously paired PlayStation Link device is ready to connect. This lets you hear audio from a Bluetooth device and a PlayStation Link device simultaneously.
For a PS5, PC or Mac PlayStation Link setup, the included PlayStation Link USB adapter is the relevant connection hardware. It is separate from the direct Bluetooth pairing described above. PlayStation also supports PlayStation Link connections with compatible PlayStation hardware and Portal devices.

Simultaneous use does not make Bluetooth a second active Bluetooth playback connection: the earbuds can play audio from only one Bluetooth device at a time. A ready, previously paired PlayStation Link device can still provide its own audio path alongside that one Bluetooth source.
PlayStation states that simultaneous Bluetooth audio does not affect the latency of PlayStation Link audio. In practical terms, adding phone audio does not change the stated latency behavior of the PS Link stream, although each device still needs to be paired and ready.
How do I switch between a phone, tablet and other paired devices?
PULSE Explore can remember up to 10 Bluetooth pairings, but remembering a device is different from actively connecting to it. Only one Bluetooth device can connect and play Bluetooth audio at a time.
- Stop or disconnect audio on the Bluetooth device currently using the earbuds.
- If another nearby device keeps reconnecting, temporarily disable Bluetooth on that device.
- On the device you want to use, open its Bluetooth list and select PULSE Explore.
- For a device that has never been paired, use the case-button sequence and select PULSE Explore within the 30-second search window.
A PlayStation Link source can remain active alongside the one selected Bluetooth source. That does not allow two phones to stream simultaneously.
What is the difference between Bluetooth phone audio and PlayStation Link audio?
The two wireless paths serve different devices and use different controls.
Recommended Free Tools
| Connection | Primary use | Hardware needed | Volume control | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | Compatible phone or tablet | Phone or tablet with Bluetooth; no USB adapter for the phone pairing | Adjust Bluetooth volume on the phone | Only one Bluetooth device can connect and play audio at a time |
| PlayStation Link | Compatible PlayStation hardware, PS5, PC, Mac or Portal | PlayStation Link-capable device; the USB adapter is relevant to PS5, PC and Mac | The earbuds’ volume button controls PlayStation Link audio | It is a separate wireless link from Bluetooth |
| Bluetooth plus PlayStation Link | Phone audio alongside a ready PlayStation Link source | Both devices paired and available | The earbud volume control still changes only PlayStation Link audio; phone controls Bluetooth volume | Bluetooth playback remains limited to one Bluetooth source |
This distinction explains why pressing an earbud’s volume button may not change music coming from your phone. For Bluetooth music, calls or other phone audio, use the phone’s own volume controls.
How do volume controls and microphones work over Bluetooth?
When PULSE Explore is connected to a phone over Bluetooth, the phone controls the Bluetooth audio level. The earbuds’ volume button is assigned to PlayStation Link audio, not to Bluetooth audio from the phone. If both wireless links are carrying sound, changing the earbud volume still affects only the PlayStation Link stream.
Both earbuds include microphones. They can be used for voice chat and other microphone functions supported by the connected device and application. Whether a particular phone app exposes every microphone feature depends on that app and the phone’s operating system.
Why can’t my phone find PULSE Explore?
Most failures come from the case not being in pairing mode, the 30-second search period expiring, or another previously paired device reconnecting first. Work through these checks in order.

Bluetooth is off or the list is stale
- Confirm Bluetooth is switched on in the phone’s Settings app.
- Remain on the Bluetooth-device list while you put the earbuds into pairing mode.
- If the list does not refresh, leave and reopen the Bluetooth settings page before repeating the case-button sequence.
The case indicator is not rapidly blinking blue
Place both earbuds in the case and press and hold the PlayStation Link button for approximately eight seconds. Release the button only when the indicator quickly blinks blue. A solid-blue indicator means a connection has already been established; no light pattern that matches these states means you should repeat the sequence.
The pairing window expired
PULSE Explore searches for a Bluetooth device for up to 30 seconds. If you waited too long to select it, the earbuds turn off. Start pairing mode again with another approximately eight-second hold, then choose PULSE Explore promptly.
Another device keeps taking the connection
After Bluetooth pairing, the earbuds can search for a previously paired PlayStation Link device that is ready to connect. They may also reconnect to another previously paired Bluetooth device. Temporarily disconnect or disable Bluetooth on the competing device, then repeat the supported PULSE Explore pairing sequence from the phone.
The phone still reports incompatibility
PlayStation requires a Bluetooth-capable mobile device but cautions that not all devices necessarily work with the earbuds. If the phone continues to reject the connection after the correct indicator sequence, check the phone manufacturer’s Bluetooth support and update status rather than assuming the earbuds use a universal pairing profile.

The documented Bluetooth pairing-search period lasts up to 30 seconds. If PULSE Explore is not selected during that period, the earbuds turn off instead of waiting indefinitely. This is a timeout, not evidence that the phone has permanently rejected them. Put both earbuds back in the case, hold the PlayStation Link button for approximately eight seconds until the indicator quickly blinks blue, and select PULSE Explore promptly.
What if the phone says connected but there is no sound?
First verify that PULSE Explore is shown as the active media-output device rather than merely saved as a paired accessory. Use the phone’s audio-output selector to choose the earbuds, then raise the phone’s Bluetooth volume. The earbud volume button is for PlayStation Link audio and may not change the level of music arriving over Bluetooth.
If a PlayStation Link device is active at the same time, remember that its volume and the phone’s Bluetooth volume are separate. Changing one does not necessarily change the other.
How do I reconnect after pairing?
Once PULSE Explore has been paired, open Bluetooth on the phone and select PULSE Explore if it is not already connected. Keep Bluetooth enabled on only the device you want to use when several previously paired devices are nearby; disabling a competing device temporarily can prevent an unwanted reconnection.
If the earbuds have powered off because the original 30-second pairing search ended, return them to the case and repeat the approximately eight-second PlayStation Link-button hold. Pairing is retained, but the earbuds still need to be awake and connected before they can receive phone audio.

How many Bluetooth devices can PULSE Explore remember?
PlayStation Support states that the earbuds can pair with up to 10 Bluetooth devices. “Pair” here means the devices can be stored as known connections; it does not mean ten phones can stream simultaneously. Only one Bluetooth device can be connected and playing audio at a time, although a PlayStation Link source can operate alongside that Bluetooth connection.
Does every PlayStation wireless earbud use this method?
No. The eight-second case-button procedure, the rapidly blinking blue indicator and the device name PULSE Explore are specific to the PULSE Explore documentation. Other PlayStation headsets or earbuds may use different controls, firmware or wireless systems, so identify the exact model before following a pairing guide.
What should I check before contacting support?
Record the exact point at which the process fails: whether Bluetooth is enabled, whether the case indicator rapidly blinks blue, whether PULSE Explore appears in the list, and whether the light becomes solid blue. That information separates a phone-discovery problem from a pairing-timeout or competing-device problem.

What do readers usually ask about PULSE Explore Bluetooth pairing?
Is the PlayStation Link USB adapter required for an iPhone or Android phone?
No. The phone connection is a direct Bluetooth pairing, so the adapter is not part of the mobile setup. Use the adapter when you also need a PlayStation Link connection on supported PS5, PC or Mac equipment.
Will simultaneous phone and PlayStation Link audio add latency to PS Link?
PlayStation states that simultaneous Bluetooth audio does not affect PlayStation Link audio latency. The two links can therefore be active together when their devices are ready.
What does the official support wording mean by “pair”?
It means the earbuds must first be registered with the phone as a Bluetooth device before the phone can use them for audio. Turning Bluetooth on alone is not enough; the case must enter pairing mode and PULSE Explore must be selected from the device list.
Can I pair ten phones and use all of them at once?
No. Up to 10 Bluetooth devices may be paired with the earbuds, but only one Bluetooth device can connect and play audio at any given time. To use a different phone, disconnect the current Bluetooth source or temporarily turn off its Bluetooth connection before selecting the other paired device.
Can I use the same steps with a tablet?
Yes, the documented direct connection is for a compatible mobile phone or tablet. Turn on Bluetooth on the tablet and follow the same case-button sequence, while remembering that PlayStation does not guarantee compatibility with every device.
What does a rapidly blinking blue case light mean?
It means PULSE Explore is in Bluetooth pairing mode and waiting for a device. Select PULSE Explore from the phone’s Bluetooth list within the documented 30-second window. A solid-blue light indicates that the connection has succeeded.

Can the earbud buttons change phone volume?
Not for Bluetooth phone audio. Adjust that level on the phone. The earbuds’ volume control applies to PlayStation Link audio, including when Bluetooth and PlayStation Link are active simultaneously.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the PlayStation Link USB adapter required for an iPhone or Android phone?
No. PULSE Explore pairs directly with a compatible phone over Bluetooth, so the adapter is not part of the mobile setup. The adapter is relevant when you also want PlayStation Link on supported PS5, PC or Mac equipment.
Will simultaneous phone and PlayStation Link audio add latency to PS Link?
PlayStation states that simultaneous Bluetooth audio does not affect PlayStation Link audio latency. Bluetooth and PlayStation Link can therefore operate together when their devices are ready.
What does the official support wording mean by “pair”?
Pairing means registering the earbuds with the phone as a Bluetooth device before using them for audio. Enabling Bluetooth alone does not complete that registration.
Can I pair ten phones and use all of them at once?
No. Up to 10 Bluetooth devices can be stored as pairings, but only one Bluetooth device can connect and play audio at a time. Disconnect the current source before switching to another paired phone.
Why did PULSE Explore turn off before I selected it?
The Bluetooth pairing-search period lasts up to 30 seconds. Put both earbuds in the case, hold the PlayStation Link button for approximately eight seconds until the indicator quickly blinks blue, and select PULSE Explore promptly.
Can I pair PULSE Explore with a tablet?
Yes, a compatible tablet can use the same direct Bluetooth procedure. PlayStation cautions that not every Bluetooth-capable mobile device is guaranteed to work.
What does the rapidly blinking blue indicator mean?
It signals Bluetooth pairing mode. Select PULSE Explore from the phone’s Bluetooth list within 30 seconds; solid blue indicates a successful connection.
Why does changing the earbud volume not change my phone’s music?
The earbud volume control applies to PlayStation Link audio. Use the phone’s own Bluetooth volume controls for music, calls and other audio sent over Bluetooth.
The Bottom Line
To pair PULSE Explore with a phone, turn on Bluetooth, dock both earbuds, hold the case’s PlayStation Link button for about eight seconds until the indicator quickly blinks blue, and select PULSE Explore within 30 seconds. Solid blue confirms the connection. The USB adapter is unnecessary for phone Bluetooth, Bluetooth volume is controlled on the phone, and only one Bluetooth device can play at a time.
