Connect the PS5 Access controller to the console with the included USB cable, complete pairing with the PS button on the stick base, and then plug compatible accessibility hardware into one of the four 3.5mm expansion ports labeled E1, E2, E3 and E4. Assign each connected input in the PS5 Access controller profile settings. The USB socket is reserved for the PS5 connection, charging and controller-software updates; it cannot be used as a hub for USB switches or other USB accessories.
This guide explains the port types, electrical and connector requirements, setup sequence, profile mapping, compatibility checks, limitations and troubleshooting steps for external buttons, switches, triggers, sticks and similar devices.

What connects to the PS5 Access controller
The Access controller accepts compatible third-party accessibility devices through four 3.5mm expansion ports. Looking at the controller from left to right, the ports are labeled E1, E2, E3 and E4. A connected device can provide a button input, a trigger axis or a stick axis, and its signal can then be assigned to a command in an Access controller profile on the PS5.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Device class | Input signal | Typical connector | What it can provide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Button device | Digital on/off | Two-contact 3.5mm plug | A single press-and-release action, such as a face button, shoulder button or another mapped command |
| Trigger device | One-axis analog | Four-contact 3.5mm plug | Variable movement on one axis, suitable for a pressure-sensitive trigger-style control |
| Stick device | Two-axis analog | Four-contact 3.5mm plug | Horizontal and vertical movement for a miniature or external analog stick |
The connector count describes the expected electrical arrangement, not simply the shape of the plug. A device that physically fits a 3.5mm socket can still be electrically incompatible. Sony also states that the expansion ports do not support peripherals that need a power supply, so a powered accessory should not be treated as compatible merely because it uses a 3.5mm connector.
Prepare the PS5 before connecting accessories
First-time setup has a prerequisite: the PS5 must already be configured and paired with a DualSense wireless controller. The Access controller pairs with one PS5 console at a time, so moving it to another console requires pairing it again there.
- Have the PS5 turned on and complete the console’s initial setup.
- Pair a DualSense wireless controller with the console before beginning Access controller setup.
- Keep the included USB cable available. It is required for the initial connection and can be used later for charging and software updates.
- Check the accessory maker’s specifications for the exact model, plug wiring, signal type and power requirements.
- Do not assume that every button, foot pedal, joystick or trigger sold as an accessibility product works with the Access controller.
Physical ergonomics matter as much as electrical compatibility. Before buying, consider the force needed to activate the device, its travel distance, the size of its actuator, how it mounts, and whether the player can reach it consistently from their chosen position.
Step-by-step: pair the controller and connect a switch
- Turn on the PS5. Wait for the console to reach the user-selection or home screen.
- Connect the Access controller. Use the included USB cable to connect the controller to the PS5.
- Press the PS button on the stick base. This starts the controller connection process.
- Select a user. Choose the user account that will use the controller.
- Complete the on-screen setup. Follow the instructions using the base profile. The base profile provides the controls needed to finish setup before any custom profile is selected.
- Allow pairing and charging to finish. Once the controller is paired, you can leave the USB cable connected for wired use or disconnect it if wireless operation is preferred.
- Insert the accessory plug. Push the compatible 3.5mm plug fully into E1, E2, E3 or E4. A partially inserted plug can produce no input or an intermittent input.
- Open Access controller profile settings. On the PS5, open the Access controller profile settings and select the port and input you want to configure.
- Assign the command. Map the connected button, trigger or stick input to the desired PS5 control, then test it in a game or the console interface.
Repeat the last two steps for each connected device. Keep a note of which physical accessory is connected to each port; the controller identifies the ports as E1 through E4, while the physical devices may look identical once installed.
How to map external inputs in an Access profile
Profiles determine what each electrical input does in software. After plugging in a device, open the PS5’s Access controller profile settings, choose the connected port and select the command that the player needs. A simple button can be assigned to a single digital command. An analog trigger or stick should be assigned to a control that accepts the corresponding axis.
Use the profile editor to check the result rather than judging by the accessory’s label. For example, a switch advertised for a particular console button still needs to be assigned to that button in the Access profile. A stick device may expose two axes, so verify both horizontal and vertical movement. If an analog device moves in the wrong direction or reaches only part of its range, stop and check its compatibility and wiring with the manufacturer instead of forcing an unsuitable mapping.

Choosing the right type of external device
Button devices and external switches
A button device is a digital on/off input. It reports an open or closed circuit rather than a range of positions, making it suitable for a large external button, a pressure switch, a sip-and-puff interface that presents a switch output, or another single-action control that meets the connector and electrical requirements.
Button devices are expected to use a two-contact 3.5mm plug. The technical specification describes a contact resistance below 10 ohms when the button is on and insulation resistance above 1 megohm when it is off. Those values are engineering targets for device builders, not a promise that every commercial two-contact switch will work. Use the accessory manufacturer’s compatibility guidance for the exact model.
Trigger devices
A trigger device provides one analog axis. Unlike a digital switch, it can report intermediate positions, allowing a game to distinguish a light pull from a full pull when the mapped command supports analog input.
Trigger devices are expected to use a four-contact 3.5mm plug. Sony’s technical specification describes a 10k ± 3k ohm potentiometer and a maximum input voltage of 1.8 V for trigger and stick devices. These values are important when building or adapting hardware. For ordinary buyers, they are a reason to request a compatibility statement from the accessory maker rather than selecting a device by plug shape alone.

Stick devices and external joysticks
A stick device supplies two analog axes: typically left-right and up-down. It can be useful when a player needs an external joystick positioned away from the Access controller or wants a different actuator size and travel than the built-in controls provide.

Stick devices use the same expected four-contact 3.5mm arrangement as trigger devices, but they expose two axes instead of one. The same 10k ± 3k ohm potentiometer expectation and 1.8 V maximum input voltage apply. Confirm that the device is designed for the Access controller’s input specification and that its physical travel suits the player.
Connector, power and compatibility checks
Before purchasing an accessory, work through these checks:
- Identify the signal type. Decide whether you need a digital button, a one-axis trigger or a two-axis stick.
- Confirm the plug arrangement. Button devices are expected to use two-contact 3.5mm plugs; trigger and stick devices are expected to use four-contact plugs.
- Confirm that the device does not require port power. The expansion ports are not specified to power peripherals. A device with an external power supply, battery requirement or powered electronics may not function through the Access controller.
- Check the exact model. Sony warns that not every commercial device works. Ask the maker about PS5 Access controller compatibility rather than relying on a generic “3.5mm” description.
- Check the command you need. Make sure the device exposes the kind of input that can be assigned in an Access profile. A digital switch cannot substitute for an analog axis when a game requires variable movement.
- Check the physical setup. Verify that the cable length, actuator force, mounting method and reach are appropriate for the player’s position.
The technical values are especially relevant to people building custom hardware. Sony specifies a potentiometer resistance of 10k ± 3k ohm for trigger and stick devices, a maximum analog input voltage of 1.8 V, button contact resistance below 10 ohms while closed, and insulation resistance above 1 megohm while open. These figures should be treated as design guidance, not as a universal compatibility guarantee for a home-built device.
Can you use a USB adaptive switch?
No. The Access controller’s USB port is not a general-purpose accessory hub. Sony’s support wording is explicit: “The USB port is used to connect the controller to your PS5® console to charge and update the device software. It does not support USB-based third-party accessories.”
Use the four 3.5mm expansion ports for supported accessibility inputs. If a switch is sold only as a USB device, it cannot be connected directly to the Access controller through USB. A third-party converter should not be assumed to work unless its maker specifically documents compatibility with the Access controller’s electrical input requirements.
Using more than one controller
The PS5 can use up to two Access controllers together. It can also combine one or two Access controllers with a DualSense or DualSense Edge wireless controller. This makes it possible to distribute commands between controllers or let another person provide inputs, but each controller and accessory still needs to be paired and mapped through the console.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Because the Access controller pairs with one PS5 console at a time, a multi-controller setup should be completed on the console where it will be used. Keep the active profile assignments clear when several physical devices are connected, especially if two Access controllers have similar port layouts.

External 3.5mm inputs expand the available controls, but they do not add features that the controller itself does not support. The Access controller does not support the touch pad except for the touch-pad button, vibration, adaptive triggers, motion sensing, speaker, microphone, mute button or headset audio.
It is compatible only with PlayStation 5 consoles. A 3.5mm accessory that works with another accessibility interface or another console is not automatically usable on PS5 through the Access controller.

PlayStation’s official Access controller product page lists the Logitech Adaptive Gaming Kit for Access controller as a related product. It is a named example of an adaptive accessory kit intended for this controller, but availability and exact compatibility can change. Verify the current model, included connectors and intended input type before purchase. Other manufacturers also sell external buttons, switches, triggers and sticks; the same connector, power and profile-mapping checks apply to all of them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting external accessories
The PS5 does not detect any input
- Confirm that the Access controller completed its initial pairing and that the correct user was selected.
- Push the 3.5mm plug fully into the selected E port.
- Open the Access profile settings and assign that port to a command; an unassigned port will not produce the expected action.
- Test the accessory in another E port to rule out a loose connection, then return to the intended mapping.
- Check the accessory maker’s documentation for the exact model and wiring.
The input works intermittently
An incompletely inserted plug, a damaged cable or a switch that does not meet the expected contact behavior can cause intermittent activation. Disconnect the plug, inspect it for damage, reinsert it firmly and test without moving the cable. If the fault follows the accessory to another port, contact the accessory maker; if it remains with one port, the controller may need service.
A USB switch is not recognized
This is expected behavior. The USB socket accepts the PS5 connection, charging and device-software updates, not USB third-party accessories. Use a compatible 3.5mm device or an accessory specifically documented for the Access controller.

An analog trigger or stick behaves incorrectly
Check that the device is the correct class, has the expected four-contact plug and does not exceed the stated analog electrical limits. A trigger provides one axis, while a stick provides two. If the profile expects a different input type, remap it to the appropriate command. Persistent incorrect range, drift or direction should be referred to the accessory manufacturer because it may indicate incompatible wiring or calibration.
The accessory requires power
The expansion ports do not support peripherals that need a power supply. A powered device may light up or appear physically connected yet fail to provide a usable input. Choose a passive compatible device or one whose maker explicitly confirms that it operates within the Access controller’s port specification.
The controller will not connect after moving it
The Access controller pairs with one PS5 console at a time. Reconnect it to the target PS5 with the included USB cable and repeat the pairing process, including pressing the PS button on the stick base and selecting a user.
Updating the controller
Access controller device-software updates are delivered through PS5 console system-software updates. Keep the controller connected to the PS5 by USB when the console requests an update or when you are troubleshooting a connection. The same USB connection used for updating is not a route for third-party USB accessories.
Practical setup checklist
- PS5 setup is complete and a DualSense controller is paired.
- Access controller is paired with the target PS5 using the included USB cable.
- Wireless use is selected only after pairing and charging are complete.
- Accessory type is identified as button, trigger or stick.
- Plug contacts match the expected two-contact or four-contact arrangement.
- Accessory does not require power from the expansion port.
- Plug is fully inserted into the chosen E1, E2, E3 or E4 port.
- Input is assigned in an Access controller profile.
- Physical position, force and travel are comfortable and repeatable.
- Each additional controller or accessory has a clear profile assignment.
The reliable connection method is therefore: pair the Access controller to the PS5 over USB, use E1 through E4 for compatible 3.5mm accessibility hardware, and finish the setup in the PS5 profile editor. Treat connector shape alone as insufficient proof of compatibility, and keep USB devices out of the controller’s accessory path.
