To join a Minecraft server, use the edition and release the server supports, sign in with a Microsoft Account, and enter the exact address (and port when required). Java Edition uses Multiplayer; Bedrock Edition uses Play > Servers. A Java client cannot normally join a Bedrock server, and vice versa, unless the server operator has installed and configured a compatibility solution.

The steps below cover saved and one-time connections, LAN worlds, Realms, ports, cross-play limits, account requirements, and the most reliable order for fixing connection errors.

Check these requirements before you connect

Most failed connections are caused by an edition, version, account, address, or permission mismatch. Confirm each item before changing network settings.

  • Edition: Find out whether the server accepts Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. The two editions use different server systems.
  • Compatible release: Ask the administrator which Minecraft release or protocol the server currently supports. A fully released client may need to be updated or rolled back to match it; snapshot and preview builds are especially likely to be incompatible.
  • Microsoft Account: Multiplayer requires you to be signed in with a Microsoft Account.
  • Online permissions: Your account’s multiplayer and privacy settings must allow joining. On consoles, the platform’s required paid online subscription must also be active.
  • Connection details: Copy the hostname or numeric IP exactly. Get the port from the administrator when one is supplied. Do not replace a public address with a local address such as 127.0.0.1.
  • Access rules: Some private servers use an allowlist, invitation, password, or other operator-controlled restriction.

Join a Java Edition server

Java Edition’s server browser is under Multiplayer. You can connect once without saving the server, or store its details for later.

Minecraft | Java & Bedrock Deluxe Collection | Windows Digital Code
  • DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
  • SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).

One-time connection with Direct Connection

  1. Start Minecraft Java Edition and choose Multiplayer.
  2. Accept the online-play warning if it appears.
  3. Select Direct Connection.
  4. Enter the server address supplied by the administrator. Use the exact hostname or numeric IP, including a port suffix if the administrator provided one.
  5. Choose Join Server to connect.

Direct Connection is useful for a temporary visit or when you do not want the address saved in your list.

Save a Java server for repeated visits

  1. Open Multiplayer and select Add Server.
  2. Enter a recognizable name, such as the community or friend’s server name.
  3. Enter the supplied server address.
  4. Save the entry.
  5. Select the new entry and choose Join Server.

The saved name is only a label on your computer; it does not change where Minecraft connects. If the administrator changes the address or port, edit the saved entry rather than continuing to retry the old details.

Use the release the server supports

Java servers accept particular releases and protocols. In the Minecraft Launcher, create or select an installation running the release named by the administrator. If you are using a snapshot or another preview build, switch to the latest fully released patch that the server supports. A server can be online and visible while still rejecting a client running the wrong release.

Join a Bedrock Edition server

Bedrock uses the Servers tab inside Play. Featured servers provide their own join control; other servers must be entered manually.

Join a featured server

  1. Start Minecraft Bedrock Edition and select Play.
  2. Open the Servers tab.
  3. Choose a featured server and select Join Server.

Featured entries supply their connection information inside Minecraft, so you do not normally type an address or port.

  • ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.

Add a non-featured Bedrock server

  1. Open Play, then select the Servers tab.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and choose Add Server.
  3. Enter a name for the server.
  4. Enter the server address supplied by its administrator.
  5. Enter the port when the administrator provides one. A custom port is not interchangeable with the default port used by another server.
  6. Choose Play to connect immediately, or Save to keep the entry for later.

Bedrock also has a Friends tab. It is where you can see eligible friends who are online and accept invitations to Bedrock Realms.

Join a Realm with an invitation code

  1. Open Play.
  2. Use Join Realm.
  3. Enter the Realm invitation code provided by the owner.
  4. Confirm the join prompt.

A Realm invitation is different from a public server address. Ask the owner for a current invitation code if the previous one no longer works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What server address and port should you enter?

The administrator must give you the authoritative connection details. An address can be a hostname such as play.example.com or a numeric IP address. Enter it exactly as supplied, preserving punctuation and any port information.

Bedrock Dedicated Server ports

Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation lists 19132 and 19133 as the configured default IPv4 and IPv6 server ports. Those values describe the documented defaults, not a universal port for every Bedrock server. An administrator may configure a different port, and the firewall must allow whichever ports are configured.

For a Windows client connecting to a Bedrock Dedicated Server running locally on the same computer, Microsoft documents enabling loopback and using 127.0.0.1 with port 19132. That local address is appropriate only for that same-machine setup; it is not a substitute for the public address other players need.

  • SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
  • COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.

Do not guess a missing port

If the server owner gives you an address but no port, ask whether the server uses the standard connection settings for your edition. Do not assume that a port copied from a different server will work. A correct hostname paired with the wrong port commonly produces a timeout or refused connection.

Can Java and Bedrock players play together?

Java and Bedrock are separate editions. A normal Java client joins a Java server, while a Bedrock client joins a Bedrock server. Buying or installing both editions does not automatically make a particular server cross-play compatible.

Cross-play through a server operator’s setup

Java-Bedrock play is possible only when the server operator has deployed and maintains a compatibility setup that accepts both editions. The operator must tell players which edition to use, which address and port to enter, and which releases are supported. The official guidance used for this article does not endorse a particular third-party bridge, so treat cross-play as a property of that individual server rather than a feature you can enable in your client settings.

Realms cross-play boundary

Realms is cross-platform only within one edition: Java players join Java Realms, and Bedrock players join Bedrock Realms. A Java player cannot enter a Bedrock Realm simply because both players use the same Microsoft Account family, and the reverse is also true.

Choose the right way to play with others

Your best connection method depends on whether everyone is nearby, whether the world must remain online, and who will handle networking and access control.

Option Edition compatibility Availability Setup and network work Address and access Published capacity or price
LAN world Players use the same edition as the host world. Designed for people on the same local network. Low; the host opens the world to LAN. No public server exposure is required. Players discover the local game through Minecraft rather than using a public hostname. No separate recurring server fee stated.
Direct online server Must match the server’s accepted edition and release. Available whenever the operator keeps the server online. The operator handles hosting, firewall, updates, and access rules. Players enter the supplied hostname or IP and, when required, port. Price and player limit depend on the operator; no universal figure is established.
Bedrock Realms Bedrock only. Private cloud-hosted world designed to remain online. Low for the owner; invitations are handled in Minecraft. Invite-based rather than a manually entered public server address. $3.99 per month for Bedrock Realms, with the owner plus two simultaneous players, according to Minecraft’s current page accessed in 2026.
Bedrock Realms Plus Bedrock only. Private cloud-hosted world designed to remain online. Low for the owner; invitations are handled in Minecraft. Invite-based rather than a manually entered public server address. $7.99 per month, with the owner plus 10 simultaneous players, according to Minecraft’s current page accessed in 2026.
Java Realms Java only. Private cloud-hosted world designed to remain online. Low for the owner; invitations are handled in Minecraft. Invite-based rather than a manually entered public server address. $7.99 per month, with the owner plus 10 simultaneous players, according to Minecraft’s current page accessed in 2026.
Self-hosted server Must match the server software and configured edition. As long as the host computer and network remain available. High; home-network configuration, firewall rules, updates, backups, and moderation are the owner’s responsibility. Owner controls the address, port, allowlist, and other access rules. No single price or capacity applies; hardware, bandwidth, and configuration determine the result.

If you would rather not handle ports and firewall rules at home, a game host can run the server for you. Godlike.Host offers Minecraft Java, Bedrock and modded servers in 10 locations, with free DDoS protection, a personal firewall for player access and a game panel, so friends only need the address you share.

Connect over a local network (LAN)

Java LAN world

  1. Have the host open the single-player world.
  2. Pause the game and choose Open to LAN.
  3. Choose the available game settings and start the LAN session.
  4. On another Java computer connected to the same local network, open Multiplayer.
  5. Select the discovered LAN game and join it.

LAN discovery is local. Players outside that network need an online server or another hosting arrangement; a LAN listing is not a public address.

Bedrock local play

Bedrock’s local and friend-play features are accessed from Play and the Friends tab. The host should open the world with multiplayer enabled, and other players on the same network or included through the account’s permitted friend settings can select it when it appears. If the world does not appear, verify that every player is signed in, using the same edition, on the same local network where applicable, and allowed to play multiplayer.

Why Minecraft says “Outdated Client” or “Outdated Server”

Microsoft explains that these messages indicate a protocol-version mismatch between the client and server. Protocol changes commonly follow minor releases, but even patch releases can differ, so matching only the major version is not enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix the mismatch

  1. Read the server operator’s stated supported release.
  2. Check the release shown by your Java installation or Bedrock game.
  3. Update your client if it is older than the server’s supported release.
  4. If the server has not updated yet, select the compatible older fully released installation instead of the newest release.
  5. Close and restart Minecraft after changing versions, then reconnect.

Do not treat a preview or snapshot build as equivalent to the nearest numbered release. The protocol can differ even when the version names look similar.

Troubleshoot a failed connection in the right order

Change one variable at a time so you can identify the cause. Follow this sequence rather than immediately opening ports or reinstalling the game.

  1. Re-enter the address and port. Copy them again from the server owner. Remove accidental spaces and check every character.
  2. Confirm the server is online. An offline or restarting server cannot accept a connection, even when your details are correct.
  3. Confirm the edition. Ask whether the server is Java, Bedrock, or a specifically configured cross-play server.
  4. Match the release and protocol. Update or roll back your client to the release the operator supports. Resolve any Outdated Client or Outdated Server message first.
  5. Check Microsoft Account access. Multiplayer and privacy permissions can block joining. On a console, verify the required paid online subscription.
  6. Check allowlists and invitations. A private server may require the operator to add your account, or a Realm invitation may have expired.
  7. Check firewall rules on a self-hosted Bedrock server. The configured ports, including the documented defaults 19132 and 19133 when those are used, must be allowed through the host firewall and network.
  8. Check Windows loopback for a local Bedrock Dedicated Server. For a same-computer connection, enable loopback as Microsoft documents and use 127.0.0.1:19132 when that is the server’s configured local endpoint.
  9. Check service and operator status. If the game service is having an outage or the server owner has changed access rules, only the relevant status page or operator can resolve it.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

Symptom Most likely checks
“Outdated Client” or “Outdated Server” Match the exact client and server releases or protocols; patch-level differences can matter.
Unable to connect after entering a hostname Recheck spelling, port, server uptime, and whether the hostname is public or local.
Server appears but you are denied entry Check the allowlist, invitation, account permissions, and edition restrictions.
Local Bedrock server works for others but not the host computer Check Windows loopback and the documented local endpoint configuration.
LAN world is missing Confirm the host opened the world to LAN or enabled Bedrock multiplayer, and verify the players are on the intended local network and signed in.
Connection times out on a self-hosted server Verify the configured port, firewall rule, router exposure, server process, and that you were given the public rather than private address.

Keep multiplayer safer

Use invitations and allowlists for private worlds, and share an address only with people you trust. Minecraft advises against sharing personal details. Mute rude or spam accounts and block users who should not contact or join you. Blocking prevents that person from contacting you in Minecraft and through Xbox Live and keeps them from joining your Realm.

For a public server, use a separate in-game identity where appropriate, avoid reusing personal passwords, and leave if an operator asks for information unrelated to playing. Server owners should publish clear rules, remove abusive players, and back up a self-hosted world before changing software or versions.

Bottom line

Use Multiplayer for Java and Play > Servers for Bedrock, enter the administrator’s exact address and port, and match the server’s edition and release. LAN is simplest for people on one network; Realms provide private, always-online worlds within a single edition; a direct or self-hosted server offers more control but requires the operator to maintain availability, networking, and access rules.
