- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Open Documents, then Electronic Arts, The Sims 4, and Mods.
- Copy your extracted mod files into the
Modsfolder.
You can also paste this into File Explorer’s address bar:

Do not use the EA App or Steam installation folder
The Sims 4 has separate locations for its program files and personal user data. The installation folder contains the game itself; the user-data folder contains saves, screenshots, settings, Tray files, and Mods.
Do not normally put mods in locations such as:
C:Program FilesEA GamesThe Sims 4
C:Program Files (x86)Origin GamesThe Sims 4Installing through Steam does not usually change the Mods location. Steam or the EA App may store the executable files elsewhere, while your Sims 4 user data remains under Documents or OneDriveDocuments. See EA’s user-data location guidance for the distinction.
If the Electronic Arts or Mods folder is missing
- Launch The Sims 4.
- Reach the main menu or load into a household.
- Exit the game normally.
- Check Documents and OneDriveDocuments again.
The game normally creates Electronic ArtsThe Sims 4 after it runs. If The Sims 4 exists but Mods does not, create a folder named exactly Mods, or launch and exit the game once more.

EA’s public help page allows manually creating a missing Mods folder, while EA forum guidance recommends letting the game create its user-data structure first. The safest approach is to run the game before creating anything, and never create a second Sims 4 folder inside the installation directory.
Install a mod or custom content file correctly
For ZIP, RAR, and 7Z downloads
Compressed archives cannot be used as mods by themselves. Right-click the downloaded archive, choose Extract All or use an archive utility, then copy the files from the extracted folder.
Normal Mods content uses:
.packagefiles for custom content and many mods.ts4scriptfiles for script mods
A basic file layout might look like this:
...The Sims 4ModsExampleMod.package
...The Sims 4ModsExampleScript.ts4scriptPackage files can generally go directly in Mods or a shallow subfolder. Keep script mods directly in Mods while testing, and follow the creator’s instructions because script-mod folder-depth requirements can vary.

Enable mods in The Sims 4
- Launch The Sims 4.
- Open Options.
- Select Game Options.
- Choose Other.
- Enable Enable Custom Content and Mods.
- Enable Script Mods Allowed.
- Select Apply Changes.
- Restart the game.
A major game update can turn these settings off, so check them again after patches. EA explains this in its mods and updates guidance.
How to find the active folder when OneDrive is involved
Click the File Explorer address bar and read the complete path. If it includes:
C:Users[name]OneDriveDocuments...then OneDrive is handling or synchronizing Documents, and the active Mods folder may be:

C:Users[name]OneDriveDocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4ModsA common mistake is placing files in the regular Documents path while the game is reading the OneDrive path. Search for every folder named The Sims 4 if necessary, then identify the one containing your current Saves, Screenshots, or localthumbcache.package.
Do not delete either copy immediately. Back up Saves, Tray, and Mods first. Simply dragging Sims 4 data to another location can cause the game to generate a new, empty user-data folder unless the relocation is handled correctly.
Mods still do not appear? Use this checklist
- Verify the full path. Confirm that the files are under the active Documents location, not Program Files, Steam, or an old user profile.
- Check OneDrive. Compare the normal Documents and OneDriveDocuments paths.
- Extract the download. Move the actual
.packageor.ts4scriptfiles, not just a ZIP, RAR, or 7Z archive. - Check the file type. Put lots and households in
Tray, notMods. - Reduce folder depth. Put one test package and one test script directly in Mods.
- Re-enable both settings. Updates can disable custom content and script mods.
- Restart the game. Settings changes do not take effect until you restart.
- Test gradually. Remove recently added or outdated files, then add content back in small groups.
Game updates can make previously working mods incompatible. Check the creator’s update notes and keep a backup of your saves before testing unfamiliar content. EA notes that mods are third-party additions that EA and Maxis do not pre-screen, endorse, or support; use trusted creators and sources. Manual installation or a mod manager?
You do not need paid software to locate the folder or install a few files manually.
- CurseForge: Useful for supported Sims 4 content that you want to browse, install, update, and organize centrally. It does not cover every creator or every mod. See the CurseForge app and Sims 4 hub.
- The Sims Resource CC Manager: Best suited to players who mainly download content hosted on The Sims Resource. Its manager does not download externally hosted items. See the official CC Manager page.
For occasional downloads or content from independent creators, manual extraction and copying is often the simplest option. EA does not endorse particular third-party mods or managers.
Platform note
The Sims 4 supports mods on PC and Mac. Mods are not available on the PlayStation or Xbox versions.
