There is no official one-click conversion from a 2014 Dungeons & Dragons character to Arcana Unleashed. The reliable method is a controlled rebuild: preserve the character’s concept, level goal, relationships and signature gear, then recreate the rules-facing parts under the current 5.5e rules and Arcana Unleashed options. Wizards of the Coast’s conversion guidance describes this as “more art than science” and says the Dungeon Master has the final say.
Copy the original sheet, inventory every choice, select the closest current species, class, subclass and background, audit spells and equipment, recalculate all derived numbers, and record every judgment in a conversion ledger. The result should feel like the same hero at the table, even where an exact mechanical duplicate is impossible.

What changes when a 2014 character enters Arcana Unleashed?
Arcana Unleashed is labeled a New 5.5e product on the official United States marketplace. Its official source page is dated September 1, 2026, and the book is built around character options, spells, magical worlds, factions, magic items and creatures. It is not presented as a conversion guide with a numbered 2014-to-AU procedure.

That distinction matters. A 2014 character sheet contains assumptions about species traits, class progression, backgrounds, spell wording, feats, equipment and advancement. A current 5.5e campaign may express those same ideas differently. Copying every old line onto a new sheet can create mismatched action rules, obsolete spell text, incorrect bonuses or abilities that no longer have a clean place in the target rules.

Use the old character as a design brief rather than as a block of text to be pasted forward. Keep the parts that define the character to the player and the campaign, then rebuild the parts that interact with the new rules.

The catalog figures above come from D&D Beyond’s 2026 listing. They describe what is available, not a requirement to use every option. A character can use a current core subclass and take only an Arcana Unleashed spell, feat, faction or item when that is the closest match.
Before rebuilding: freeze the 2014 character
Make an untouched copy of the original sheet. Keep the copy in the campaign folder or use a scan if the sheet is handwritten. The frozen version is your reference if a conversion choice later feels wrong.

Record the rules-facing inventory
- Character level, class and subclass, including the level at which each feature was gained.
- Species or race, racial traits, ability-score increases and movement modes.
- All six ability scores, modifiers, proficiency bonus and any temporary adjustments.
- Saving-throw proficiencies, skill proficiencies, expertise, languages and tool proficiencies.
- Maximum and current hit points, Hit Dice, Armor Class, initiative, speed and passive Perception.
- Every attack, its ability, proficiency, range, damage dice, damage type and special property.
- Spells known or prepared, spellcasting ability, spell attack bonus, spell save DC, slots and concentration spells.
- Feats, fighting styles, invocations, maneuvers and other choices that are not obvious from the class level.
- Armor, weapons, tools, mundane gear, carrying limits, money and consumables.
- Magic items, rarity, attunement, charges, recharge conditions and any story-linked powers.
Record the character that the numbers do not show
- Personality, ideals, bonds and flaws.
- Family, allies, enemies, patrons, factions, debts and promises.
- The character’s job in the party: damage dealer, defender, controller, scout, healer, face, ritual specialist or another function.
- The abilities that make the character feel unique, such as a recurring spell, weapon, familiar, transformation or tactical routine.
- Setting assumptions, including whether the campaign is in the Forgotten Realms or another world.
The 2014 Basic Rules treat a background as a feature plus two skill proficiencies and, in some cases, languages or tools. That information is easy to lose if you start by choosing a new sheet instead of documenting the old one.
Agree on the target campaign before choosing options
Ask the DM four questions before assigning a new level or subclass. Wizards’ conversion guidance leaves the starting level to the DM and identifies the DM as the final arbiter, so these are campaign decisions rather than automatic character-builder settings.
- What level is the character entering at? It may be the same level as the 2014 campaign, the level of a new group, or the level appropriate for a particular adventure.
- Which books are legal? Confirm whether all Arcana Unleashed material is available, whether other supplements remain allowed, and whether legacy options are grandfathered.
- How are old magic items handled? The DM may permit an unchanged item, substitute a current item, reduce its power, or make it a story object until an equivalent appears.
- What setting and faction assumptions apply? A faction in Arcana Unleashed may need a new name, patron or location to fit the campaign world.
Write these answers at the top of the conversion ledger. Otherwise, a species or faction choice can look correct on paper but be unusable in the actual campaign.
Rebuild the species and ability-score package
Start with identity, not a bonus. Choose the current species that best preserves how the character looks, moves and behaves in the fiction. The target rules may distribute ability scores, proficiencies and traits differently from the 2014 presentation, so do not copy an old racial package line for line.

- Describe what the original species contributed to the character’s story. A celestial heritage, aquatic adaptation, darkvision, natural weapon or unusual lifespan may matter more than its old ability-score increase.
- List the mechanical effects that the player actually uses. Separate frequently used traits from text that has never affected play.
- Choose the current species with the closest combination of appearance, movement, senses, resistances and signature traits.
- Apply the target rules’ ability-score and proficiency rules, then remove any duplicate or obsolete benefit rather than stacking both versions.
- Ask the DM to approve a cosmetic reskin when the story match is excellent but a minor trait differs.
Retain the six 2014 ability scores as a reference point, then recalculate modifiers and every dependent statistic after applying the target package. A conversion is not complete if the new species is selected but old racial bonuses are still embedded in attack rolls, saving throws or spell DCs.

Choose the class and subclass by party job and fiction
Keep the original class when it still expresses the character’s job and story. If it does not, you are allowed to change it. Wizards’ guidance specifically says not to feel constrained by the original class; a narrative concept can be represented by a different class, subclass or set of proficiencies.

Do not select a new subclass merely because its name resembles the old one. Compare what the character does during a normal round, what resources the subclass consumes, how often its features work, and whether it competes for the same action, bonus action or reaction as an existing ability.
When none of the eight subclasses fits
Keep the closest current subclass and use Arcana Unleashed as the thematic layer. A 2014 illusionist might remain a current wizard while adopting an AU spell, feat, faction and evolving item. A ranger whose story involves an arcane order might keep the best current ranger subclass and gain the faction connection through the background rather than forcing the character into Arcane Archer.
Rebuild the background and faction connection
Preserve the character’s history, personality, bonds, ideals and flaws first. Then choose a target background that supplies comparable skills and tools. An existing background can usually be molded to fit; a background’s label is less important than the proficiencies and story feature it provides.
Match the mechanical package
- Compare the old background’s two skill proficiencies with the target options.
- Replace a skill only when the new choice represents the same experience in the fiction. A former courtier might trade an obsolete social proficiency for the current equivalent used by the campaign.
- Keep languages and tools that matter to the character’s history; swap them only for like-kind proficiencies when the DM agrees.
- Rewrite the background feature in setting-appropriate language without granting a new combat advantage.
Arcana Unleashed’s ten backgrounds are especially useful when the character needs a magical origin, institution or faction tie. A faction should answer a story question—who trained the character, who protects them, who wants their service or what obligation follows them—not simply add another passive bonus.
Audit spells, feats and magic items instead of copying them
Create a three-column audit headed Keep unchanged, Replace with current equivalent and Re-theme or retire. Put every spell, feat and item into one column before rebuilding the sheet.
Spell audit
For each spell, check its current action type, range, duration, concentration requirement, damage, saving throw, components, target, scaling and place on the class spell list. A spell that looks familiar can still produce a different action-economy or concentration problem under current rules. Use one of Arcana Unleashed’s 33 new or revised spells when it reproduces the old character’s signature function more cleanly than an obsolete entry.

Feat audit
Confirm the feat’s prerequisite, ability-score interaction, action type and frequency. Arcana Unleashed contains more than 20 feats, so a replacement may preserve a familiar tactic without importing an outdated interaction. If no feat matches, keep the closest current feat and explain the difference in the ledger instead of inventing a hybrid.
Magic-item audit
Check rarity, attunement, charges, recharge, activation time and whether an item’s power scales with character level. Arcana Unleashed includes more than 45 magic items, including evolving items. An evolving item can be a strong way to preserve a named heirloom or signature weapon while letting its power grow under the new rules. If the old item has no equivalent, retain its appearance and history, then ask the DM to assign a current mechanical item or make it a narrative relic.
Recalculate every derived value
Once species, class, subclass, background, feats, spells and equipment are chosen, calculate the sheet from the target rules rather than editing old totals. Recheck each of these fields:

- Ability modifiers after the new ability-score package.
- Hit-point maximum, Hit Dice and healing rules.
- Armor Class, including armor, shields, Dexterity limits and item bonuses.
- Initiative, speed, passive Perception and other passive scores.
- Attack rolls, damage, critical effects, weapon properties and range.
- Saving throws and skill checks, including expertise or advantage sources.
- Spell attack bonus, spell save DC, prepared or known spells and spell slots.
- Inventory limits, ammunition, tools, consumables and attunement slots.
Use the current core rules for exact formulas and wording. The available conversion guidance does not provide a universal table of every 2014-to-5.5e difference, so the DM should resolve any conflict that remains after the rebuild.
Run a focused table test
A short test is more useful than trying to prove that every number is mathematically identical. Compare the converted character with the rest of the party at the same level and ask whether the defining play pattern still works.
- Ordinary attack: Make the character’s most common weapon or spell attack and compare accuracy, damage and range with party members performing the same role.
- Signature ability: Use the feature or spell that makes the character recognizable. Check its action cost, resource cost, range, duration and frequency.
- Defensive reaction: Test the character’s normal response to an incoming attack or failed save. Make sure reactions and concentration are not accidentally double-counted.
- Typical encounter: Play two or three rounds, including movement, a resource expenditure and a recovery decision. Note whether the character has meaningful choices rather than a single forced rotation.
- Party comparison: Ask the DM whether the character’s damage, control, durability, utility and spotlight time are in the expected range for that group.
This is a balance check, not proof of exact replication. Wizards’ guidance treats conversion as judgment aimed at making a character feel like the older-edition version, not at reproducing every statistic.
Keep a conversion ledger
Add a brief ledger to the final sheet or campaign notes. It prevents future level-ups from reintroducing an old rule by accident and gives the DM a record of each deliberate compromise.

Flag anything with no direct equivalent. The ledger is particularly valuable when the character gains a level, changes factions or moves to a different DM.

How to choose between two plausible conversions
When several target options appear reasonable, score each one against the same questions instead of choosing by name alone:
- Party function: Does it keep the character’s job in combat and exploration?
- Fictional identity: Would the character’s history still make sense without rewriting its central premise?
- Action economy: Does the option compete with the character’s established bonus action, reaction or concentration routine?
- Resource demand: Does it consume slots, charges, points or limited uses at a rate the player can manage?
- Proficiency coverage: Does the character retain the skills, tools, saves and weapons that define their competence?
- Spell-list access: Are the essential spells available without adding exceptions?
- Survivability: Does Armor Class, hit points, mobility and defensive access fit the campaign’s expected danger?
- Setting and faction fit: Can the option exist naturally in this world?
- Learning load: How many new rules must the player and DM track?
Prefer the choice that preserves the defining play pattern with the fewest exception rules. A slightly less exact name with clean interactions is usually better than a perfect thematic label that requires several house rulings.
Common conversion failures and fixes
Copying old racial traits on top of a current species
Symptom: The character has both the old and new versions of a resistance, proficiency or movement benefit.
Fix: Keep the current species package and record the old trait as replaced or cosmetic unless the DM grants a specific exception.
Choosing a subclass by title alone
Symptom: The character’s new subclass sounds right but changes the action rotation or removes the feature the player actually enjoyed.
Fix: Test the ordinary attack, signature ability and defensive reaction before final approval.
Using obsolete spell text
Symptom: The sheet has an old duration, concentration requirement, range or saving throw.
Fix: Replace the entry with the current spell text, then use an Arcana Unleashed revision when it better preserves the original function.

Preserving a magic item’s power without checking rarity
Symptom: A legacy item grants more charges, attacks or defenses than comparable current items.
Fix: Use a current or evolving item, reduce the effect, limit attunement or make the item story-only until the DM sets an appropriate progression.
Ignoring the campaign level
Symptom: The rebuilt character is technically legal but begins with too many or too few resources for the party.

Trying to preserve every number
Symptom: The sheet contains stacked exceptions and still does not play like the old character.
Fix: Preserve concept, relationships and signature actions first; accept a different number when the target rules require it.
Costs, formats and online play
The official United States marketplace listed the Arcana Unleashed rulebook at $59.99 in digital, physical and digital-plus-physical formats when checked October 19, 2026. The official FAQ listed the Arcana Unleashed Ultimate Bundle at $129.99, including the core expansion, Deadfall, a map pack and digital preorder bonuses. Prices and availability can change, and those figures are United States listings rather than a universal regional price.
A D&D Beyond listing provides a digital character-building route, while a Roll20 compendium listing supports online play. Confirm that your group owns access to the same rules text and that the DM’s campaign platform has the options enabled before rebuilding digitally.
When is a full rebuild unnecessary?
You may not need to move every rule-facing element immediately. If the character is between adventures, keep the frozen 2014 sheet as a story reference and rebuild only the parts needed for the next session. A character whose class, subclass, species and spells already have current equivalents may require little more than a fresh calculation of derived values and a spell-text check.
Do not treat a partial rebuild as permission to mix two versions indefinitely. Mark every untouched element in the ledger and set a point—such as the next level-up or a long rest in a safe settlement—when the remaining choices will be resolved.
Final conversion checklist
- Original 2014 sheet copied and stored.
- Target level, legal books, setting and item policy approved by the DM.
- Species rebuilt without duplicated legacy traits.
- Ability scores and all dependent values recalculated.
- Class and subclass chosen for both party function and fiction.
- Background skills, tools and feature matched to the target rules.
- Faction connection written into the character’s history where appropriate.
- Spells checked for current action, range, duration, concentration, damage and saving throw text.
- Feats checked for prerequisites and frequency.
- Magic items checked for rarity, attunement, charges and scaling.
- Attack, defense, spellcasting and resource routines tested beside the party.
- Every non-obvious change recorded in the conversion ledger.
A successful Arcana Unleashed conversion is therefore a supervised rebuild, not a formula. Preserve the hero’s identity and play pattern, use current rules for every mechanical interaction, and let the DM resolve the few choices for which no direct equivalent exists.
