First check Epic Games Server Status and any exact error message. Then identify whether the problem is high ping or packet loss, a PC crash or graphics issue, or a console problem: each needs a different fix. Reinstalling the game will not resolve an Epic service outage, and a network test alone will not diagnose a crash.
Check for an outage before changing settings
Look at Epic Games Server Status and Fortnite’s Community Issues/Status channels, which Epic points to in its console troubleshooting guide. If Epic reports a service issue, local reinstallations and router changes are unlikely to address its cause. Note any exact error message; searching Epic Support for that wording can lead to a more specific fix than a general crash checklist.

Tell network lag apart from frame-rate problems and crashes
Check Fortnite’s in-match network indicators
- Open Settings, go to the Game UI tab, and turn on Net Debug Stats. Apply the change.
- Join a match and check the ping and packet-loss indicators while the problem is happening. In Epic’s display, a solid white line indicates no packet loss; red marks indicate lost packets.
- Record whether the symptom is a high or suddenly changing ping, packet loss, stuttering or low frame rate, a freeze, a black screen, or a full crash. These symptoms point to different troubleshooting branches.
Ping is round-trip latency in milliseconds. A match may use a different server from another match, and congestion or ISP routing can change the result. Average ping is not the whole picture: check packet loss and jitter as well. Epic says consistently more than about 1% packet loss can cause in-game problems; a large gap between minimum and maximum latency suggests jitter.

Compare the average, packet loss, and minimum and maximum results. The endpoint test uses ICMP, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP; some networks prioritize ICMP differently, so this test is a clue, not a perfect measurement of in-match traffic.
Fix high ping or packet loss
Test the connection under real playing conditions
A connection that looks clean when idle may struggle when the household is streaming or downloading. Retest while the same activities that coincide with your matches are active. Large transfers can interfere with play, and uploads can be particularly disruptive when upload capacity is limited.

- Tri-band 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz; latest WiFi 6E supports 8-streams on tri-band simultaneously, up to 6.6Gbps speed
- AI QoS; satisfies all users' needs by automatically prioritizing data packets
- Powerful processor; 1.8 GHz quad core processor delivers ultra fast and reliable connections
- Mystic light; sync RGB light effects with mystic light compatible products
- Game accelerator; provides an uninterrupted WiFi connection for immersive gaming experiences
- Restart the modem and router.
- If practical, connect the gaming device to the router with Ethernet. It avoids Wi-Fi signal and congestion variables, but needs an available port and a workable cable route.
- Pause or schedule large downloads, uploads, and video streams during matches.
- If using Wi-Fi, test both bands where available. 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther but may be more crowded; 5 GHz can be faster but has shorter range.
- Check router placement and firmware. If the router supports QoS, Smart Queue, or a gaming mode, try it as a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix.
Consider subregion preference and server routing
Fortnite’s Subregion Preference can favor a preferred subregion more often, but Epic cautions that it may increase queue times and reduce match quality. Matchmaking may select different datacenters within a region, so one match’s ping is not a universal baseline. Epic Games Support says, “A sudden increase in ping is usually caused by how your internet service provider (ISP) routes traffic.”

If high latency or loss persists, send your ISP the endpoint used, test results, and in-game ping. Explain that the endpoint test uses ICMP while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP. If the issue continues after you contact the ISP, reach out to Epic Games Support and specify the Fortnite experience affected, such as Ranked or Reload.

Work through Fortnite crashes on PC
Use Epic’s PC crash and technical-issues guide in stages. Start with the exact error if there is one; if not, check that the PC meets the game’s requirements. Then proceed through the following checks rather than treating reinstalling as the first fix:
- Verify Fortnite’s game files in the Epic Games Launcher.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache.
- Update the graphics driver.
- Try launching the game or launcher as an administrator, then continue with Epic’s remaining troubleshooting steps if the issue persists.
- Consider reinstalling the launcher or game, trying a different drive, checking background applications, and checking the drive for errors. These are later escalation steps, not guaranteed solutions.
- If the problem remains, contact Epic Support with the error and the steps already tried.
Address freezes, black screens, or visual problems on PC
For apparent lag that comes with freezes, black screens, or visual problems, Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guide recommends checking system requirements, setting quality presets to Low and 3D Resolution to 100%, and updating graphics drivers. If that helps, raise quality gradually to identify a setting your system can handle. In competitive modes, Fortnite restricts play to a 16:9 aspect ratio, so side bars can be expected rather than a fault.

Troubleshoot Fortnite problems on consoles
Epic’s console guide recommends checking for game and platform updates, clearing the platform cache, and power cycling the console using the relevant platform instructions. Reinstall Fortnite only if those steps do not help. Epic notes that its console troubleshooting is limited because consoles are closed platforms; unresolved platform-specific issues may need PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo support.
