Yes, you can convert a DMG file to an ISO on Windows without a Mac. Windows does not natively mount DMG images, so you need a utility that understands the format. The most straightforward graphical route is AnyBurn: open its image-conversion tool, select the DMG, choose ISO as the destination, set an output path, and start the conversion. For repeatable or batch work, a dmg2img-style command-line converter is more suitable.

After conversion, mount the ISO in Windows and inspect its files before deleting the original DMG or writing physical media. Conversion changes the container format; it does not turn a macOS application into a Windows program, and it does not guarantee that the result will boot on a particular PC or virtual machine.

What is a DMG file, and why would you convert it to ISO?

A DMG is an Apple disk-image container commonly used to distribute macOS software. It can hold an application bundle, an installer, documents, or a bootable volume image. ISO is the optical-disc image format most broadly understood by Windows disc tools, virtual machines, and image-writing utilities.

Windows has no built-in DMG mounting support. A DMG-capable program must decode the image, interpret its compression and partition data, and write an ISO file. AnyBurn’s documentation specifically describes converting a DMG to ISO on a Windows PC (AnyBurn’s conversion instructions).

Conversion is useful when another Windows program accepts only ISO, when you need to archive an image in a format supported by your virtualization or backup workflow, or when you need to write the image with an ISO-oriented tool. It is unnecessary if your only goal is to copy a few files from the DMG: extraction is usually faster and produces the files directly.

What do you need before starting?

Prepare the source image, a destination with enough free space, and a converter. The output can be comparable in size to the source, and temporary working space may be needed while the utility decompresses and rebuilds the image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A complete DMG file: Keep the original in place until the ISO has been mounted and checked.
  • Windows permissions: Save the output somewhere you can write, such as a folder under your user profile, rather than a protected system directory.
  • Free storage: Leave room for the ISO and any temporary files. Do not assume a compressed DMG and its expanded ISO will occupy the same amount of space.
  • A current converter: AnyBurn’s download page lists version 6.9, released July 28, 2026, with free and Pro editions and support for Windows 11, 10, 8/8.1, 7, Vista, and earlier systems. Version and availability details can change, so check the official download page when you install it.
  • A verification plan: Decide which files, folders, or checksums you will inspect after conversion. If the image is intended for a virtual machine or installation process, test it in that target environment before relying on it.

Download utilities only from their publisher or a reputable distribution channel. If the DMG is encrypted, password-protected, incomplete, or damaged, have the password or an undamaged copy available; a converter cannot repair missing image data.

How do you convert DMG to ISO with a graphical tool?

AnyBurn provides the clearest documented Windows GUI workflow. Its instructions state that it can convert a DMG to ISO or burn the DMG to a blank CD/DVD. The labels below follow that workflow; wording can vary slightly between releases.

Step 1: Install and open AnyBurn

Install AnyBurn, start it from the Start menu, and allow it to run with the normal permissions required to read your source and write the destination. Close applications that may be modifying the DMG, such as a backup job or file synchronizer.

Step 2: Open the image-conversion function

On the main screen, choose Convert image files. Do not choose a general file-copy or disc-burning function: conversion is the operation that creates a new image file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Select the DMG source

Use the source-file picker to browse to the .dmg file. If the file is on removable storage or a network share, copy it to a local drive first when possible. Local access reduces failures caused by a disconnected drive or an interrupted network transfer.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Step 4: Choose ISO as the destination type

Set the destination image type to ISO. Choose an output filename and folder. Avoid giving the new file the same name and location as the source; the DMG must remain available for recovery and comparison.

Step 5: Start the conversion

Click Convert Now. Let the process finish without putting the computer to sleep or disconnecting the source drive. Large images can take time because compressed data must be read and a new image structure must be written.

Step 6: Confirm completion and preserve the source

Wait for AnyBurn’s completion message, then check that the ISO exists at the selected path and has a plausible file size. A successful dialog alone is not proof that every file is readable, so continue with the mounting and inspection steps below.

How do you convert DMG to ISO from the command line?

A dmg2img-style converter is useful when you perform the same operation repeatedly, need a scriptable process, or prefer not to use a graphical interface. The commonly documented form is:

dmg2img InputDMGFilenameWithPath OutputISOFilenameWithPath

For example:

dmg2img "C:Imagesinstaller.dmg" "C:Imagesinstaller.iso"

Use the executable supplied by the build you installed and consult its current documentation for supported options. The syntax above is documented in a Windows conversion guide, but builds can differ in accepted flags and supported DMG variants (command-line conversion reference).

A reliable command-line workflow

  1. Create a destination folder and verify that it has sufficient free space.
  2. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell in the directory containing the converter, or add the converter’s directory to your PATH.
  3. Place quotes around paths containing spaces. Use a different output filename so the DMG remains untouched.
  4. Run the command and watch for an error rather than assuming that a returned prompt means the image is valid.
  5. Record the input and output paths, date, and converter version if the conversion is part of a repeatable archive or deployment process.
  6. Mount and inspect the resulting ISO before using it in automation or writing it to media.

Do not copy command-line switches from an unrelated build without checking its help output. If the tool reports an unsupported image format, a truncated file, or a read error, obtain a complete DMG or use a different converter that explicitly supports that image variant.

How do you mount and verify the resulting ISO in Windows?

Windows can mount an ISO as a virtual DVD drive. Microsoft documents the PowerShell Mount-DiskImage cmdlet and shows it used with a full image path (Microsoft Learn: Mount-DiskImage).

Mount it in File Explorer

  1. Open File Explorer and browse to the ISO.
  2. Right-click the file and choose Mount. Windows assigns a drive letter and displays the image as a virtual DVD drive under This PC.
  3. Open that drive and compare its folders and files with what the DMG was expected to contain.
  4. When finished, right-click the virtual drive and choose Eject.

Mount it with PowerShell

Open PowerShell and run:

Mount-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:Imagesinstaller.iso"

To identify the drive letter assigned after mounting, you can query the image and its volumes:

$image = Get-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:Imagesinstaller.iso"
Get-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:Imagesinstaller.iso" | Get-Volume

When the check is complete, dismount it with:

Dismount-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:Imagesinstaller.iso"

The exact volume information depends on the image’s partition layout and filesystem. If Windows mounts the ISO but shows no usable files, that does not automatically mean the conversion failed; the contained filesystem may not be one Windows can read.

What should you verify?

  • Confirm that the expected top-level folders and files appear.
  • Open several representative files, not just the first item in the directory.
  • Check that filenames, sizes, and nested folders are present where expected.
  • If you have a known checksum for the intended image, calculate a checksum for the ISO and compare it with the value supplied by the publisher. Do not invent a comparison value when none was provided.
  • For a virtual machine, attach the ISO to a test VM and check that the guest firmware and operating system can read it.

Keep the DMG until these checks pass. If the ISO is for archival use, retain the source and a note describing the converter and settings used.

Is extraction better than conversion when you only need the files?

Usually, yes. If you need documents, images, or an application bundle rather than an ISO specifically, extract the DMG contents instead of rebuilding the image. Techdows notes that Windows has no built-in DMG support and that 7-Zip can extract many DMGs, but 7-Zip does not create ISO output (Techdows’ DMG guidance).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Extraction avoids the extra image-writing step and lets you copy only the required data. It also makes the limitation clear: a macOS application remains a macOS application after extraction. Neither extraction nor conversion turns a macOS .app bundle into a native Windows executable.

Choose extraction when:

  • You need a small number of files from the image.
  • The destination program accepts ordinary folders or archives.
  • You do not need to preserve the original disc-image layout.
  • You want to avoid creating a second large image file.

Choose conversion when:

  • A virtual machine, archive system, or image-writing tool specifically requires ISO.
  • You need to preserve an image-like container rather than copy selected files.
  • You plan to mount the result repeatedly on Windows or pass it to another ISO-aware system.

Which DMG-to-ISO method should you use?

Criterion AnyBurn GUI dmg2img-style command line Extraction tool
Best for One-off conversions and users who prefer menus Repeatable jobs, scripts, and batch workflows Retrieving files without preserving an image
操作 control Source, destination type, and output path selected in dialogs Paths and options entered as commands; exact flags depend on the build File and folder selection rather than ISO creation
Output ISO image ISO image when the selected build supports the source Extracted files or folders, not ISO
Verification Completion message followed by manual mounting and inspection Command output and exit status followed by mounting and inspection Open extracted files directly
Automation Limited compared with a command-line process Suitable for repeatable commands; test your exact build first Depends on the extraction utility
Licensing and availability AnyBurn lists free and Pro editions; current details are on its download page Varies by the specific build and distribution Varies by the extraction utility
Windows support AnyBurn’s download page lists Windows 11, 10, 8/8.1, 7, Vista, and earlier systems Depends on the executable and Windows environment Depends on the extraction utility and DMG variant

The table’s “not stated” details are intentional: DMG support varies by utility and by image variant, so do not assume that a program handling one compressed or partitioned DMG handles every DMG.

Why does DMG-to-ISO conversion fail, and how can you fix it?

The file was only renamed

Changing installer.dmg to installer.iso changes the filename extension, not the bytes or internal structure. Use an actual converter and then mount the newly created ISO.

The DMG is incomplete or damaged

A partial download can look like a normal file but fail during decompression or near the end of conversion. Compare its size with the publisher’s stated download size when available, download it again, and keep the replacement in a separate folder. If a checksum was supplied, verify it before converting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The DMG is encrypted

An encrypted image may require a password or may not be supported by the selected converter. Do not expect a converter to bypass encryption. Obtain the authorized password, unlock the image using a compatible environment, or request an unencrypted distribution from the owner.

The image uses an unsupported compression or partition layout

DMG is a container family rather than one single filesystem. Different images can use different compression, partition-map, and filesystem combinations. Try a utility that documents support for the specific variant, and avoid claiming success solely because the output file was created.

The ISO mounts but files are missing or unreadable

Recheck the source DMG and compare several known files, not just the directory listing. Windows may mount the ISO while lacking a driver for the filesystem inside it. Test the ISO in the operating system or virtual machine that is expected to consume it.

There is not enough disk space

Free space must cover the output and any temporary expansion. Move the destination to a larger local drive, remove unrelated temporary files, or process the image on a machine with more capacity. Never delete the source merely to make room before verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The command is not recognized

Run the converter from its installation directory or provide the full path to the executable. Quoting the executable and both file paths prevents spaces in names from being interpreted as separate arguments. Check the tool’s help output for the correct syntax for your build.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Will a converted ISO boot on Windows?

Not necessarily. Bootability comes from the image’s boot catalog, partition scheme, operating-system loader, firmware compatibility, and target hardware or virtual machine settings. Converting a non-bootable DMG does not add boot code, and converting a bootable image does not guarantee compatibility with a Windows PC’s BIOS or UEFI configuration.

If booting matters, test the ISO in the intended environment. For a VM, select the firmware mode expected by the image and attach the ISO as virtual optical media. For physical media, use an image-writing utility that offers verification and a compatible USB drive or blank DVD; writing an ISO to a data partition by ordinary drag-and-drop will not create bootable media.

What is the safest end-to-end workflow?

  1. Identify the goal: extract files, create an ISO for a specific application, or preserve an image.
  2. Copy the DMG to a local folder and make sure it is complete and readable.
  3. Choose AnyBurn for a guided one-off conversion or a compatible dmg2img-style tool for repeatable work.
  4. Write the ISO to a different path and leave the DMG unchanged.
  5. Wait for the converter to report completion and confirm that the ISO exists.
  6. Mount the ISO with File Explorer or Mount-DiskImage.
  7. Inspect expected folders and open representative files.
  8. Test the ISO in the target virtual machine or image-writing workflow if applicable.
  9. Only after successful checks, archive or delete the source according to your retention policy.

This process separates conversion from validation. It prevents a misleading file extension, a truncated source, or an unreadable filesystem from being mistaken for a usable ISO.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert a DMG to ISO on Windows without installing a Mac virtual machine?

Yes. A Windows DMG-capable converter can read the image directly, so a Mac or macOS virtual machine is not required for the conversion itself. You still need a compatible environment later if the image contains software that only runs on macOS.

How large should the destination drive be for a DMG-to-ISO conversion?

Reserve at least the expected ISO size plus additional temporary space, because the converter may expand compressed data while building the output. The exact requirement depends on the DMG’s compression and internal layout, so leave a generous margin rather than relying on the DMG’s displayed size.

Can I convert a DMG stored on a network share?

It may work, but a local copy is safer for a long conversion. Network interruptions, disconnected shares, or changing permissions can produce incomplete reads; copy the DMG locally when possible and compare the result afterward.

Does converting a DMG preserve the macOS installer’s licensing or activation?

Conversion changes the storage container, not the software’s licensing terms or activation requirements. Follow the software publisher’s license and use the resulting image only where you are authorized to run or archive it.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if Windows assigns no drive letter after mounting the ISO?

Open Disk Management or query the mounted image with PowerShell to see whether a volume exists and whether Windows recognizes its filesystem. If a volume is present but unreadable, use the operating system or virtual machine that supports that filesystem rather than repeatedly recreating the ISO.
