Use spears or halberds to receive Skeleton Horsemen, keep a reserve beside your ranged units, and focus missile fire while the cavalry is pinned. Skeleton Horsemen are fast, shielded Tomb Kings light cavalry with 76 speed and vanguard deployment. They are dangerous because they can bypass the main battle line and reach artillery, weapon crews, or exposed missile units, but they are poor at prolonged combat against a prepared anti-large screen.
What Skeleton Horsemen are designed to do
A backline harassment unit
Skeleton Horsemen are not primarily a line-breaking cavalry unit. Their battlefield job is to find an unprotected target, charge it, disrupt it, and disengage before heavier troops can respond. Unit references describe them as light cavalry suited to attacking war-machine crews, weapons teams, and isolated ranged units.

That role explains why an otherwise safe army can suddenly lose its artillery or archers. The horsemen do not need to defeat your frontline. They only need an open route around it. If your army has a gap, an exposed flank, or no unit behind the artillery, their speed lets them choose the engagement.

Vanguard deployment is especially important. A unit can begin ahead of the normal deployment line, so a frontline that looks connected at the start may still leave a route to your rear. Their 76 speed also means that chasing them with ordinary infantry usually creates a second gap for another unit to exploit.
The counter principle: deny the charge, then punish the pin
Total War Academy summarizes the relevant class interaction this way: “Many of the golden rules of ancient warfare apply: cavalry are thwarted by spear-wielding infantry, spear-wielding infantry suffer against swordsmen, swordsmen are vulnerable to archers, and archers are in trouble against cavalry.” Skeleton Horsemen are the cavalry in that sequence. Your answer is a protected spear or halberd screen, not an unsupported duel between ordinary infantry and fast cavalry.
Most polearms receive cavalry better than unprepared infantry because they can hold the charge and apply anti-large damage. Units with an anti-large bonus are the cleanest direct counters. Once the horsemen are pinned, missiles can fire without having to chase a moving target, and a reserve can charge their flank or rear.

The order matters:
- Block the route. Remove every open lane between the horsemen and your artillery or ranged units.
- Receive the charge. Use spears or halberds instead of sending fragile units forward.
- Pin the unit. Keep the polearm unit engaged so the horsemen cannot immediately redirect.
- Focus fire. Shoot the pinned unit with concentrated missile fire rather than splitting shots across the army.
- Counter-charge. Use a reserve or a controlled flank attack to force a retreat and accelerate its losses.
- Stop pursuing when the route is safe. Their speed allows them to disengage and seek another target, so do not pull your screen out of position for a long chase.

Polearms and anti-large infantry
These are the most reliable answer because they address both parts of the problem: the charge and the follow-up melee. A spear or halberd unit does not have to catch a unit moving at 76 speed. It only has to stand in the lane the horsemen need to use. Select the unit, face it toward the approach, and let the cavalry make contact. If you move forward to meet the horsemen, you risk opening the very lane you are trying to close.

Halberds generally offer a stronger answer when your roster provides them, while basic spears are often the economical option. The exact unit names, recruitment costs, technologies, and availability depend on your faction, campaign and current patch; compare the anti-large bonus, defensive statistics and staying power on the current unit card rather than assuming every faction’s polearm performs identically.
Missiles behind protection
Missile units are a damage tool, not a bodyguard. Keep them behind the frontline and close enough that they can fire as soon as the horsemen are pinned. Do not rely on a ranged unit to kite Skeleton Horsemen across the map: the cavalry is faster, shielded, and able to use vanguard deployment to approach from an angle that reduces the time available to react.
Focus fire is more valuable than spreading shots. Several units firing at the same pinned regiment can remove models quickly and reduce the horsemen’s ability to withdraw and re-enter. If your missiles have a clear shot before contact, fire only when a screen, terrain feature, or distance prevents an immediate charge into them.
Mobile counters
A durable anti-large cavalry unit can punish Skeleton Horsemen once they are committed to an attack. The safest pattern is a two-stage engagement: let spears or halberds absorb the charge, then send your mobile unit into the flank. Repeated charges are preferable to leaving fragile shock cavalry in a stationary melee. If the enemy horsemen disengage, return to protecting the backline instead of following them indefinitely.

The budget solution
If you cannot field a specialized counter, buy time rather than attempting a fair duel. A cheap spear screen placed beside the artillery, supported by one or two missile units, is more dependable than ordinary infantry spread across the whole map. Concentrate the protection where the horsemen’s target is most valuable. A narrow, connected formation is harder to bypass than a wide line with unsupported edges.
Deployment that prevents a backline dive
- Build a connected frontline. Deploy infantry with overlapping zones so there is no open lane from the deployment edge to your artillery or ranged troops. Leave enough spacing for units to maneuver, but not a corridor that cavalry can pass through without touching a defender.
- Account for vanguard deployment. Inspect likely approach routes and terrain before the battle begins. A Skeleton Horsemen unit may start closer to your army or on a flank, so do not assume the main enemy line is the only threat.
- Place a reserve behind each vulnerable flank. One unit immediately behind the outer edge can intercept a cavalry charge that slips around the frontline. The reserve does not need to be fast if it starts close to the target.
- Keep missiles near, but not touching, the screen. They need a firing lane once the cavalry is pinned, while still requiring enough distance that one charge cannot leap from the infantry line into the ranged unit.
- Anchor artillery and crews. Treat war machines and their crews as priority targets. Put a spear or halberd unit beside them, not several unit widths away in the main line.
- Use terrain deliberately. A slope, obstacle, map edge, or narrow approach can reduce the directions from which the horsemen can attack. Do not hide the entire army behind terrain if it blocks your own missiles; use it to shorten the defensive frontage.
Battle sequence: from first sighting to rout
Before contact
Pause briefly after identifying the horsemen and check their position rather than immediately issuing an attack order. Confirm which unit is their likely target and assign the nearest polearm to that route. If the horsemen are in vanguard position, move the reserve first; moving the artillery or missiles alone often creates another exposed angle.
When they charge
Face the polearm unit toward the charge and hold position. A receiving formation preserves its shape and keeps the backline covered. Do not send artillery crews, ordinary infantry, or ranged units forward to intercept. Their job is to remain available for the next phase, not to become the first contact.

Select the Skeleton Horsemen as the missile focus target. Keep the polearm unit engaged and watch the unit cards for a withdrawal order. If the horsemen begin to pull away before they take serious losses, use the nearby reserve to threaten their escape route, but do not abandon the artillery or open the center.

Finishing the engagement
Once the unit has lost enough models or its morale is failing, counter-charge from the side or rear. This shortens the fight and makes a clean retreat more difficult. Skeleton Horsemen have crumbling and disintegrating attributes, so undead losses and instability can end the unit without requiring a prolonged chase. After the immediate threat is gone, return the reserve to its original position.
After they retreat
Pursue only if the rest of the battlefield is secure and the retreat path cannot expose your backline. Their speed lets them disengage and redirect quickly. A long pursuit by infantry usually pulls the protector away from the exact unit the horsemen wanted to attack in the first place.

Infantry-focused armies
Use a compact line with polearms on the outside edges and beside valuable support units. Ordinary swordsmen can hold the main enemy infantry, but they should not be your first response to Skeleton Horsemen. Keep at least one uncommitted unit behind the line so a vanguard approach does not force every frontline regiment to turn around.

Reduce the distance between the screen and the missiles enough to guarantee support, then assign a specific focus-fire group to the horsemen. Avoid placing all ranged units on one exposed flank. The Total War Academy’s formation guidance—protected frontline with missiles behind it—matters more here than adding another unprotected damage dealer.

Artillery armies
Artillery should be deployed as part of the defensive plan, not as an isolated battery. A single polearm unit can guard the crew while a second reserve watches the opposite approach. If the horsemen are already in the rear, stop firing with threatened artillery and let the nearby screen make contact; preserving the battery is more important than a few additional shots.
Mobile or cavalry armies
Use speed to control the engagement, not to race into the first charge. A durable anti-large unit can intercept, while fragile shock cavalry should wait for a flank opportunity. If you commit all mobile troops to the chase, the Tomb Kings player can redirect the horsemen toward your ranged units or another weak flank.
Mistakes that make Skeleton Horsemen seem stronger than they are
- Chasing with ordinary infantry: slow units lose formation and arrive after the horsemen have chosen another target.
- Leaving missiles on an unsupported flank: a single open edge is enough for a fast vanguard unit to reach them.
- Charging unsupported cavalry into spears: Skeleton Horsemen gain their best value from the first impact; a prepared anti-large line reverses that advantage.
- Ignoring the deployment phase: vanguard units can begin behind or beside the expected frontline, so inspect the initial approach rather than reacting only when the charge starts.
- Overvaluing a successful first charge: damage against a crew or archer does not prove the horsemen will win a prolonged melee against prepared infantry.
- Splitting missile fire: several partial volleys leave the unit healthy enough to withdraw and attack again; concentrate fire while it is pinned.
- Pulling the screen away too early: a retreating cavalry unit may be baiting your protector out of position. Re-form first, then decide whether pursuit is safe.
How to compare two available counters
When your faction offers several possible answers, compare them by battlefield function rather than by unit label alone. The first five criteria determine whether the engagement works; cost and availability determine whether you can field the answer in the current army.

Patch and roster caveats
The counter logic is role-based and applies across factions, but exact unit names, prices, technologies, recruitment buildings and balance values can change. Downloadable content and campaign mode can also alter which anti-large, spear, halberd, missile or mobile units are available. Before committing to a specific roster, open the current in-game unit card and verify its anti-large bonus, defensive profile, speed and recruitment requirements.
The practical verdict remains stable: close the route with polearms, protect the flanks and artillery, pin the horsemen, focus fire, and use a reserve to finish the engagement. Skeleton Horsemen are most dangerous when your formation gives them an unguarded target and least effective when forced to fight a prepared screen.
