Craft a barrel with six wooden planks and two wooden slabs in a 3×3 crafting table. Put planks in the left and right columns, slabs in the top-center and bottom-center slots, and leave the center slot empty. A barrel stores 27 stacks, like a single chest, but it remains usable when a solid block is directly above it. That makes it particularly useful under floors, inside shelves, and in other spaces where a chest cannot open.

What you need to craft a barrel
You need a crafting table, six regular wooden planks, and two regular wooden slabs. The planks and slabs do not have to come from the same wood family, although using one family keeps a build visually consistent. Current recipe references list these usable families:

Use normal slabs. Petrified oak slabs are excluded from the current recipe explanation, so they should not be treated as interchangeable with the listed slab types.
Barrel recipe: exact 3×3 arrangement
- Collect six wooden planks and two wooden slabs.
- Open a crafting table so the 3×3 crafting grid is available.
- Place planks in the upper-left, middle-left, and lower-left slots.
- Place three more planks in the upper-right, middle-right, and lower-right slots.
- Place one slab in the upper-center slot and one slab in the lower-center slot.
- Leave the center slot empty.
- Move the barrel from the result slot into your inventory.

The pattern makes the barrel shape: planks form the two sides while the slabs cap the top and bottom of the recipe. If the result does not appear, check that you opened a crafting table rather than the 2×2 personal grid, that both slab slots contain slabs, and that the center slot is empty.

Java and Bedrock recipe differences
Current Java and Bedrock recipes use the same six-plank, two-slab arrangement. Older Bedrock guidance often says to use six sticks instead of six planks. That wording is historical: Bedrock changed from sticks to planks in version 1.20.10. Guides written before that change can therefore show a recipe that no longer works in current Bedrock worlds.
An official Minecraft article from 2021 described the older distinction as six planks in Java and six sticks in Bedrock, with two slabs in both editions. Treat that statement as a record of the earlier recipe, not as the current Bedrock instruction.

How to place and open a barrel
Select the barrel in your hotbar, aim at the surface where you want its circular front to face, and use your platform’s normal interact control. The barrel then opens to an inventory screen that works like a chest. Move items with ordinary clicks, or use your edition’s shift-click behavior to transfer stacks quickly.
Barrels work under solid blocks
A solid block directly above a barrel does not prevent it from opening. You can install one below a ceiling, under a floor, beneath a stair, or inside a low shelf and still access its inventory. This is the main practical difference between a barrel and a chest: a chest normally needs clear space above its lid.

How much a barrel holds
A barrel has 27 inventory slots. That is the same number of slots as one chest. Each slot can hold the normal stack size for the item placed there, so the useful capacity depends on whether you store stackable blocks, tools, armor, or other items with smaller stack limits.
Breaking and moving a barrel
When you break a barrel, the barrel item and its stored contents drop. An axe breaks it fastest, although other tools and bare hands can mine it. Before moving one in a storage room, make sure you have room to collect both the container and the dropped stacks.
Barrel versus chest: which storage block fits?
Choose between them based on the shape of your build rather than on single-container capacity. Both containers provide 27 slots individually, but they behave differently when combined or placed under other blocks.

When a barrel is the better choice
- You need storage below a ceiling or another solid block.
- You are building a wall of containers without leaving lid clearance.
- You want compact storage in a corridor, workshop, boat, mine, or underground room.
- You prefer every container to remain an independent 27-slot unit for sorting.
When a chest is the better choice
- You have enough vertical clearance for the lid.
- You want a single 54-slot double container.
- You are designing a storage wall around paired chests and do not need the barrel’s tight-space advantage.
Using barrels in automated storage
Barrels are valid targets for basic item automation. Hoppers can push items into a barrel and can pull items out of it. Droppers can feed items into the barrel as part of a redstone system. That makes barrels suitable for compact collection points, sorting lines, workshop input bins, and concealed storage under a floor.

Compact input and output layout
For an input station, place a hopper so it feeds the barrel, then send items into the hopper from above or from another connected container. For an output line, position a hopper beneath or beside the barrel according to the direction you want items to travel. Test the direction before filling the system: hoppers move items only toward their output side.
A barrel’s ability to open under a block is useful here because the visible access point and the automation hardware do not need a tall, chest-sized opening. You can hide the barrel under a floor while the hopper network runs below it.

An unclaimed barrel can become a nearby unemployed villager’s job-site block and assign that villager the fisherman profession. This is useful when you want a fisherman in a trading area without building a separate fishing-themed structure.
Reliable fisherman assignment
- Place an unclaimed barrel near the unemployed villager.
- Keep the barrel accessible to the villager’s job-site search rather than sealing it in a location the villager cannot reach.
- Wait for the villager to claim the job site and display the fisherman profession.
- If another villager claims it, remove competing unclaimed job-site blocks and try again.
The barrel does not need to be used as a storage container for this purpose; its job-site function is separate from the items stored inside it.

Other barrel mechanics worth knowing
Nether fuel
A barrel can be used as furnace fuel. The current Minecraft Wiki reference lists one barrel as smelting 1.5 items per block. This is a niche use because a crafted storage block is usually more valuable as a container, but spare barrels can be burned when you need a small amount of fuel.
Note-block sound
Place a barrel beneath a note block to produce the bass instrument sound. This gives builders a storage-themed block for simple musical contraptions and decorative sound systems.
Piglin behavior
Piglins become hostile when a player opens or breaks a barrel nearby. Treat barrels like other containers in the Nether: check for piglins before accessing one, and avoid opening or mining it in their line of sight if you are not prepared for combat.
World generation
Barrels can generate in village fisherman structures. Version history also records barrel loot in trial chambers, so naturally generated barrels may appear outside player-built storage rooms as well.

Practical barrel layouts
Under-floor pantry
Build a one-block access panel in a kitchen or storage room, place barrels below the floor, and label each access point with signs, item frames, or another visual marker. Because the floor above does not block the barrel, the room can keep a flat surface while storage remains underneath.

Wall-mounted workshop storage
Line a workshop wall with barrels and place a solid shelf or beam directly above them. The shelf provides decoration and a building surface without making the containers unusable. Sort common materials into separate barrels so each 27-slot inventory has a clear purpose.
Mine entrance supply station
Put barrels near a mine entrance for torches, tools, food, and building blocks. A barrel works well in a low tunnel where a chest lid would collide with the ceiling. Add a hopper below the station if you want mined items to flow into a collection system.
Fisherman trading corner
Use an unclaimed barrel as the fisherman job site, then arrange additional barrels nearby for fish, boats, and trading supplies. Keep the job-site barrel identifiable so it is not accidentally broken while reorganizing the room.
Troubleshooting a barrel recipe or storage problem
The barrel does not appear in the crafting result
- Confirm that you are using a 3×3 crafting table.
- Check that all six side positions contain wooden planks, not logs, stairs, or another block.
- Check that the top-center and bottom-center positions contain regular wooden slabs.
- Remove any item from the center slot.
- On Bedrock, replace an old stick-based pattern with the current plank-based recipe introduced in 1.20.10.
The barrel will not open
- Use the normal interact control while aiming at the barrel’s front.
- Make sure you are targeting the barrel rather than an adjacent block.
- Check for an active situation that prevents interaction, such as being in combat with nearby piglins in the Nether.
You expected two barrels to become one large container
Barrels do not combine into a double container. Each one remains a separate 27-slot inventory, so place multiple barrels side by side only when you want independent storage categories or a compact storage wall.

- Need storage under a ceiling? Choose a barrel.
- Need 54 slots in one interface? Pair chests into a double chest instead.
- Building a hopper or dropper system? Either container can serve as storage, but a barrel is easier to access in a low-clearance design.
- Creating a fisherman villager? Use an unclaimed barrel as the job-site block.
- In the Nether near piglins? Do not open or break the barrel until the area is safe.
- Playing current Bedrock? Use planks, not the historical stick recipe.
