Use the original Ozone Skyblock Reborn profile for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge. Install that exact profile through the CurseForge app, and use the matching 1.20.1 Forge server pack when self-hosting. The server pack runs on Java 17, uses 4 GB by default, and is documented to work better with 6 GB when the machine can provide it. Ozone Skyblock Reborn 2 is a different project for Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge; its files cannot be mixed with the original pack.

What Ozone Skyblock Reborn is
Ozone Skyblock Reborn (OSR) is an expert-oriented skyblock questing pack for Minecraft 1.20.1. Its progression combines technology, magic, exploration and automation, with quests that guide you from the starting island toward items normally restricted to the end of a long progression. The project description summarizes its goal as challenging players while guiding them through quests and rewarding their progress.

Because the pack is built around staged recipes and quest objectives, adding or removing mods, changing versions, or loading the wrong server files can break progression even when Minecraft itself starts.

Choose the correct pack before installing

Do not install the sequel’s client profile beside an original-pack server and expect them to connect. Minecraft version, mod loader, mods and configuration must agree on both sides. When in doubt, read the version shown in the profile and server-pack download before extracting anything.
What you need
- Minecraft Java Edition and a working Mojang/Microsoft account.
- The CurseForge app for the client installation.
- The original OSR profile targeting Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Java 17 on any computer that will run a self-hosted server.
- The matching OSR server pack if you are hosting outside the client.
- Enough memory for the server process: 4 GB is the documented default, with 6 GB recommended when available.
- A backup location for the server and world files before every pack update.
The pack itself is downloadable software, so a generic gaming accessory or physical product does not solve the installation problem. The practical choices are a computer you administer yourself or a Minecraft modpack host that can install the supplied server pack.

- Install and open the CurseForge app.
- Open Minecraft, then choose Browse or Modpacks from the navigation.
- Search for Ozone Skyblock Reborn. Select the original project, not Ozone Skyblock Reborn 2.
- Confirm that the profile shows Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge, then click Install.
- Wait for CurseForge to download the pack and create its profile. Keep the profile’s version unchanged unless the project specifically publishes a compatible update.
- Launch the installed profile from CurseForge. The first launch can take longer while Forge and the pack build caches.
If the launcher opens a different Minecraft version, stop before creating a world. Remove the incorrect profile and repeat the search, checking the game version and loader shown in the profile details. A client can appear to start successfully while still being incompatible with a server that uses another OSR release.
Set up a self-hosted OSR server
The official server-pack workflow is intentionally simple: obtain the server pack matching the client version, extract it, read its included instructions, and start the platform script. The server-pack documentation identifies Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge as the supported combination for the cited file.

- Download the OSR server pack that matches the exact client profile version.
- Create a dedicated folder for the server. Avoid placing it inside the client’s modpack folder; keeping server files separate makes backups and updates safer.
- Unzip the server pack into that folder.
- Open
instructions.txtand follow the pack-specific setup notes before the first launch. - On Windows, run
run.bat. On macOS or Linux, runrun.shfrom the extracted server directory. - Use Java 17 for the process. If the script reports an unsupported Java version, install or select Java 17 rather than trying to force a newer or older runtime.
- Start with the pack’s documented 4 GB memory setting. If the host computer has sufficient physical memory and players experience pauses during loading or automation, change the allocation toward 6 GB as recommended by the server-pack documentation.
- Stop the server cleanly after the initial setup, then copy the world and server files to a separate backup location before inviting players.
The exact script supplied with the server pack is authoritative for its launch options. Do not replace it with a random Forge installer or copy mods from another OSR release; those shortcuts can create a server that starts but does not match the quests, recipes or configuration expected by the client.
Using a paid Minecraft host
A managed Minecraft host can install a supplied modpack server pack for you. Contact the host’s support team and provide the exact original OSR version, Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge details. Confirm that the host supports Java 17 and can allocate at least the pack’s 4 GB baseline, with 6 GB available if your player count or automation load requires it.

Memory, startup and stability
The server-pack page lists 4 GB as its default RAM usage and recommends changing to 6 GB if the machine can handle it. Treat those numbers as allocation guidance, not a guarantee of a particular player count. The actual requirement changes with loaded chunks, automation, exploration and how many players are online.
- Do not allocate more memory than the host computer can spare; the operating system and other services still need RAM.
- Increase from 4 GB toward 6 GB only after checking that the machine has the capacity to keep the server and operating system responsive.
- Use the same pack build on every client and on the server before diagnosing performance or connection errors.
- When changing versions, stop the server, back up the world and server directory, install the new matching pack files, and retain the backup until the new world has been tested.
Normal mode and Expert mode
OSR starts in Normal mode. Expert mode changes progression difficulty for the save or server, so choose it before a group commits to a long-term world.

Set Expert mode with a command
- Start the server or open the world with the original OSR profile.
- Use the pack command
/packmode set Expert. - Verify the mode before beginning major crafting or quest work.
Set Expert mode in configuration
You can change the setting in packmode-common.toml before the world is loaded. This is useful for a server administrator preparing a fresh world or applying a planned configuration change without relying on an in-game command.
The official description warns that updates reset the pack to Normal. After every pack update, check the mode and repeat the command or configuration change when Expert is required. Because the setting applies to the save/server, changing it is not a per-player difficulty toggle.

Multiplayer supports quest-reward sharing, allowing a group to coordinate progression instead of manually passing every reward. The original pack can also create separate islands for players. In-game, run /gog help and follow the island commands shown by the pack.
- Have each player join the correct OSR server profile.
- Use
/gog helpto display the island command syntax installed in your pack version. - Create or assign each player’s island through those commands, following the prompts returned in chat.
- Decide how your group will share quest rewards before beginning progression, since shared rewards and separate physical islands solve different multiplayer needs.
Island creation is a pack feature, not a reason to mix files from OSR2 or another skyblock pack. If the command list differs from a guide written for another release, trust the help output from your installed version.

Updating without losing a world
- Record the client and server pack version currently in use.
- Stop the server and copy the complete world and server directories to a separate location.
- Download the next server pack only when it matches the client update you intend to install.
- Read the new
instructions.txtand apply its launch procedure rather than assuming the old script is unchanged. - Start the updated server, check the pack mode, and verify that quests, player inventories and islands load correctly.
- Have every player update the CurseForge profile to the same release before reconnecting.
Keeping the backup until the updated world has been checked is essential. A version mismatch can look like a missing-mod error, a rejected connection or a broken recipe; restoring the previous files is safer than experimenting on the only copy of a long-running skyblock world.

Troubleshooting common failures
The client connects to the wrong version
Check both labels: the original OSR profile must say Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. If either side shows 1.21.1, NeoForge or the OSR2 project, install the correct original profile and matching server pack.
The server script will not start
Confirm that the pack was fully extracted, that you read instructions.txt, and that Java 17 is installed and selected. On Windows use run.bat; on macOS or Linux use run.sh from the server directory. Do not substitute an unrelated Forge launch command before checking the supplied script.
The server runs out of memory or stalls during heavy activity
Check the current allocation against the documented 4 GB baseline. If the computer can spare more memory, move toward the recommended 6 GB and close competing applications. More allocation cannot compensate for a machine that lacks physical RAM.

Expert recipes appear to be missing
Confirm that the world is actually in Expert mode. Updates reset the pack to Normal, so run /packmode set Expert again or restore the intended value in packmode-common.toml before loading the world.
Players cannot create individual islands
Run /gog help on the original OSR server and use the commands it lists. Ensure everyone is connected to the same pack version; commands from OSR2 or another island mod are not interchangeable.

The choice is therefore a version decision, not a minor update preference. Pick the project your group intends to play, then keep every client, server pack, loader and configuration file on that release line.
