To make glass in Minecraft, smelt sand or red sand in a furnace. Place the sand in the furnace’s upper input slot, add any valid fuel to the lower slot, wait for smelting to finish, and collect one glass block for each sand smelting operation. This recipe works in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
Glass is a transparent building block used for windows and for crafting items such as beacons, daylight detectors, end crystals, glass bottles, harnesses, stained glass, and tinted glass. If you need thinner window pieces, six glass blocks can be crafted into 16 glass panes.

What do you need to craft glass in Minecraft?
You need three things: sand or red sand, a furnace, and a valid furnace fuel. Glass is a smelting result, so it cannot be produced directly in a crafting table.
- Input: Sand or red sand.
- Station: A furnace.
- Fuel: Any item accepted by the furnace as fuel.
Each completed smelting operation turns one sand or red sand into one glass block. The color of the input does not create a different glass block: both ordinary sand and red sand produce regular glass.

- Collect sand or red sand. Sand is commonly found in beaches, deserts, riverbeds, and other sandy areas; red sand is found in badlands terrain.
- Place and open a furnace.
- Put the sand or red sand in the furnace’s upper input slot.
- Put a valid fuel item in the lower fuel slot.
- Wait until the smelting operation completes.
- Move the finished glass from the furnace output slot into your inventory.
The furnace processes the input only when it has fuel. If the progress indicator does not move, check that the sand is in the upper slot and that fuel is in the lower slot rather than the output area.
Does the glass recipe work in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition?
Yes. The base recipe—smelting sand or red sand in a fueled furnace—is documented for both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. The exact interface can look slightly different between editions, but the input, fuel, and output are the same.
Minecraft’s recipe book can help you select known recipes. In Java Edition, the furnace interface also exposes recipes through the recipe-book controls. If glass does not appear in your available recipe list, make sure you have obtained the required materials and that the recipe book is showing smelting recipes rather than only crafting-table recipes.
How do you make glass panes?
Craft glass panes in a crafting table by arranging six glass blocks in two horizontal rows of three. That arrangement produces 16 glass panes.

- Open a crafting table.
- Place three glass blocks across the top row.
- Place three more glass blocks across the middle row.
- Leave the bottom row empty.
- Take the 16 glass panes from the result slot.
The recipe consumes six full glass blocks, not six sand. Smelt the sand first, then use the resulting blocks in the pane recipe. Because the output is 16 panes, panes are usually the more material-efficient choice when you are filling many window openings and do not need full blocks.
Should you use glass blocks or glass panes?
Choose a full glass block when you need a solid cube in a build or a recipe that specifically calls for glass blocks. Choose panes when you want thin window elements and more window pieces from the same amount of smelted glass.
| Option | Material requirement | Output and shape | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glass block | One sand or red sand smelted in a furnace | One full transparent block | Full-block construction, decorative details, and recipes that require glass blocks |
| Glass panes | Six glass blocks crafted in two rows of three | 16 thin window elements | Large window runs and designs where a thin pane is preferable |
Panes change the appearance and footprint of a window compared with full blocks. Plan the shape of the opening before smelting a large batch so you do not convert blocks that you later need for another recipe.
Can you get glass back after placing it?
Normally, no. Breaking a placed glass block does not drop the block as an item. You need a tool enchanted with Silk Touch to recover placed glass.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe same rule applies to glass panes: without Silk Touch, breaking a placed pane does not return a pane to your inventory. If you are remodeling a glass structure and want to reuse its materials, obtain a Silk Touch tool before dismantling it.

- With Silk Touch, a broken glass pane can be collected as a glass pane.
- Without Silk Touch, plan on replacing the glass or panes you break.
What can glass be used for?
Glass is an ingredient in several later-game crafting recipes as well as a building material. Its transparency makes it useful for structures, while its role as an ingredient means you may want to reserve some blocks instead of converting every piece into panes.
- Beacons: Glass is part of the beacon recipe.
- Daylight detectors: Glass is required to craft this redstone-related block.
- End crystals: Glass is used in the recipe for end crystals.
- Glass bottles: Bottles require glass and can hold many brewing-related fluids.
- Harnesses: Glass appears in the harness recipe.
- Stained glass: Glass can be combined with dye to make colored variants.
- Tinted glass: Glass is used to make tinted glass, which provides a darker visual treatment while remaining useful for enclosed builds.
Use the recipe book to check the exact arrangement for any of these items in your edition. Keep full glass blocks available when a recipe calls for glass itself; panes are a separate item and are not a universal substitute.
What is the most reliable early-game glass workflow?
A short preparation routine prevents wasted trips and keeps your furnace running while you work on a build.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Gather more sand than the immediate window requires. Count the full blocks you need first, then decide whether some of them should become panes.
- Separate building glass from recipe reserves. Keep a stack of full blocks aside if you expect to craft bottles, beacons, detectors, end crystals, harnesses, stained glass, or tinted glass.
- Load the furnace correctly. Input sand or red sand above and fuel below; the output slot is only for finished glass.
- Collect output before changing recipes. Remove completed glass so the furnace can continue processing the remaining input.
- Craft panes only after measuring the opening. Six blocks always produce 16 panes, so converting too early can leave you with the wrong form for a planned design.
- Protect reusable installations. If you expect to move windows later, use a Silk Touch tool when breaking them.
Why is my furnace not making glass?
Most failures come from using the wrong station or placing materials in the wrong slot. Glass is not a standard crafting-table output: the sand must be smelted in a furnace.
- No progress bar: Confirm that a valid fuel item is in the lower slot.
- Nothing in the output: Confirm that sand or red sand is in the upper input slot and that the furnace has finished processing.
- Recipe-book confusion: Switch to the furnace’s smelting recipes; a crafting-table view will not show the furnace operation.
- Insufficient materials: Remember that one smelting operation yields one glass block, while the pane recipe requires six completed glass blocks.
- Broken windows disappear: This is normal without Silk Touch; the enchantment is required to recover placed glass or panes.
How should you plan glass for a large build?
Start by deciding whether the design uses full blocks, panes, or both. Full blocks create a solid grid of transparent cubes, while panes are thin elements that can cover many openings after you craft the six-block recipe.

For a pane-heavy window wall
Measure the number of pane positions, then calculate how many groups of 16 you need. Smelt six glass blocks for every group of 16 panes, and keep any extra full blocks for repairs or other recipes.

For a full-block structure
Count the transparent cubes in the design and smelt one sand or red sand for each required glass block. Do not craft those blocks into panes unless the design changes.
For mixed construction and crafting
Reserve the full blocks needed for recipes first, then convert only the remaining blocks into panes. This avoids dismantling a finished build when you later need glass for a beacon, bottle, detector, end crystal, harness, stained glass, or tinted glass.

Glass is inexpensive to produce once you have access to sand, a furnace, and fuel, but it becomes more valuable as your projects expand. Early on, it provides simple windows. Later, the same smelted material supports redstone-related blocks, beacon construction, decorative color variants, and several utility recipes.
Because placed glass is not normally recoverable, treat a completed window as a committed build decision unless you have Silk Touch. That single limitation is the main difference between planning with glass and planning with ordinary break-and-replace building blocks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use red sand instead of regular sand to make glass?
Yes. Red sand is a valid furnace input for the same glass recipe, and one completed smelting operation produces one regular glass block. The resulting block is not a separate red-colored glass type.
Where can I find glass panes without crafting them?
Glass panes naturally occur as windows in villages, woodland mansions, and ancient cities. You can inspect those structures for panes, but recovering placed panes still requires Silk Touch.
Can glass panes be waterlogged?
Yes. Glass panes support waterlogging, which lets them remain in place while containing water in suitable builds. This property is separate from the crafting recipe and does not change the six-block-to-16-pane conversion.
Does the recipe book make glass automatically?
The recipe book can select the known smelting recipe, but the furnace still needs sand or red sand in its input slot and fuel in its fuel slot. Selecting a recipe does not remove the requirement to supply those materials.
Recommended Free Tools
What should I do with glass if I am not ready to build windows?
Store some blocks in full form. Full glass is needed for several recipes, and converting all of it into panes can leave you without the item form those recipes require.
