You can make a convincing 3D picture cube in PowerPoint without a 3D file: place three photos on a blank slide, apply the Off-Axis 1: Left, Off-Axis 1: Right, and Off-Axis 1: Top rotation presets, align the edges, group the faces, and add a Round top bevel. The result is a three-face cube illusion that remains easy to edit. If you need a cube that can turn continuously or expose every side, insert a genuine 3D model instead. The instructions below use the desktop PowerPoint ribbon; names can vary slightly by edition, but the command sequence is the same.

What is a 3D picture cube in PowerPoint?

A 3D picture cube is a composition of separate, flat picture objects. PowerPoint changes the apparent orientation of each image with 3-D Rotation, and a bevel supplies a visual edge. Your eyes read the left, right, and top planes as one solid cube even though the slide contains three independent pictures.

The documented approach shows three visible faces rather than six. That keeps the construction quick and lets you choose a different photo for each visible plane. Until you group the objects, every face can be cropped, replaced, resized, or rotated independently.

What do I need before I start?

  • A blank PowerPoint slide with enough open space for three images.
  • Three picture files that remain recognizable when displayed at an angle.
  • A desktop edition of PowerPoint with the contextual Picture Format tab. The exact ribbon wording can differ between editions.
  • A consistent plan for which image is the left face, right face, and top face.

Use pictures with similar proportions when possible. Matching proportions make the shared edges easier to align; mismatched shapes can make one face appear stretched even when the rotation settings are correct.

How do I create a three-picture cube?

Insert all three pictures first, apply the three matching rotation presets, then align and group them. Do not group the faces before they meet cleanly, because grouping makes individual corrections less convenient.

1. Start with a blank slide and insert three pictures

  1. Open a new presentation or add a blank-layout slide.
  2. Insert the three images you want to show on the cube.
  3. Resize them to a common starting height or width. Leave room around the group so you can adjust the perspective without clipping a face.

At this point the images are still ordinary flat rectangles. Keep them separate until their edges are aligned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Give the first picture a left-facing rotation

  1. Select the picture that will form the left face.
  2. Open the contextual Picture Format tab, then choose Picture Effects.
  3. Point to 3-D Rotation.
  4. In the Parallel presets, choose Off-Axis 1: Left.

The image will appear to recede toward the center of the cube. Do not judge the final size yet; the apparent width changes when a flat picture is rotated.

3. Give the second picture a right-facing rotation

  1. Select the second image, which will be the right face.
  2. Choose Picture Effects > 3-D Rotation > Off-Axis 1: Right.
  3. Drag the picture toward the first face until the two inner edges meet.

The left and right images should meet at one vertical seam. A hairline gap or overlap is easy to see against a contrasting background, so work at a useful zoom level rather than relying on a distant full-slide view.

4. Add the top face

  1. Select the third image.
  2. Choose Picture Effects > 3-D Rotation > Off-Axis 1: Top.
  3. Move it above the left and right faces until its lower edges meet the top edges of both side faces.

The three inner corners should converge at one point. If the top picture looks too narrow or too wide, resize it before making fine positional adjustments.

5. Align the three faces precisely

PowerPoint’s alignment commands help remove small inconsistencies that are difficult to spot while dragging.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Use the Selection Pane when one face is behind another or difficult to click. The pane lists each object so you can select it by name and change its stacking order.
  • Use the Align commands to establish a common edge or centerline, then use the arrow keys for small nudges.
  • Keep the visible edge lengths and face scales consistent. The cube is a composed illusion, so a one- or two-pixel gap can break the solid-object impression.

Alignment is easier before the bevel is added. The bevel can soften an edge visually, which makes a small placement error harder to diagnose.

6. Group the faces after they meet

  1. Ctrl-click (Windows) or Command-click (Mac) each of the three pictures.
  2. Open the picture or shape formatting controls, choose Group, and then choose Group again if PowerPoint presents a submenu.

Grouping lets you move and scale the cube as one object while preserving the relative positions of its faces. If you need to edit one photo later, select the group and use the command to ungroup it, make the change, and group the faces again.

7. Add a round top bevel

  1. With the grouped cube selected, open the 3-D Format controls.
  2. Set the top bevel to Round.
  3. Apply the bevel and inspect the outer edges at normal presentation size.

A bevel adds edge depth that the rotations alone cannot provide. The combination of rotated faces and a rounded top bevel makes the object read as dimensional rather than as three skewed photographs. Keep the bevel restrained: an exaggerated edge can cover important parts of the images or make the faces look inflated.

How do I change the cube’s perspective?

The Off-Axis presets are a fast starting point, but they do not fit every composition. For a custom angle, use PowerPoint’s detailed 3-D Rotation controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the picture that needs adjustment. If the faces are grouped, ungroup them or select the individual object through the Selection Pane.
  2. Choose Picture Effects > 3-D Rotation > 3-D Rotation Options.
  3. Adjust the rotation values until the face meets its neighbors at the desired angle.
  4. Repeat for the other faces, checking the shared corner after every change.

Microsoft describes this route as the way to create a custom effect: select Picture Effects, point to 3-D Rotation, choose 3-D Rotation Options, and select the setting you want. Custom values are useful when a preset leaves a visible gap, when the cube must match an existing illustration, or when you want a more dramatic viewpoint.

Change one face at a time. Altering all three rotations simultaneously makes it difficult to identify which value caused a seam to move. Once the geometry looks right, group the faces again.

How should I size and crop the pictures?

Rotation changes a picture’s apparent width, so matching the original pixel dimensions is less important than matching the visible face dimensions after rotation. Start with equal heights, then adjust each face visually so the three planes share a believable scale.

  • Crop distracting borders before applying 3-D Rotation.
  • Keep the subject of each photo away from the edge that will sit on a seam.
  • If one face appears to recede too far, adjust its size or custom rotation instead of stretching the entire group.
  • After cropping, recheck the corner where all three faces meet; cropping can change the apparent edge length.

Because the cube is built from separate objects, there is no automatic perspective matching. You are creating the visual relationship manually, and consistency at the seams matters more than identical source-image dimensions.

How can I animate the picture cube?

There are two practical approaches: animate a changing viewpoint with Morph, or use PowerPoint’s dedicated 3D animation effects where your edition supports them.

Animate a viewpoint change with Morph

  1. Finish the initial cube and leave the three faces grouped or arranged consistently.
  2. Duplicate the slide.
  3. On the duplicate, change the cube’s 3-D rotation to create the ending viewpoint. Keep the object identity and general placement consistent between slides.
  4. Select the second slide and choose Transitions > Morph.
  5. Preview the transition and adjust the ending rotations or positions if the movement does not follow the intended path.

Morph interpolates the change between the duplicated slide states, so it is useful for a controlled turn from one view to another. It does not turn the three pictures into a true model; the effect remains a transition between composed slide objects.

Use a dedicated 3D animation effect

Microsoft lists Turntable, Swing, and Jump & Turn among the 3D animation effects. After applying one, use Effect Options to set the direction, intensity, and rotation axis available in your edition.

These effects are intended for inserted 3D objects. A three-picture illusion may not expose the same controls as a genuine model, so choose the effect only when PowerPoint presents the required 3D object and options.

PowerPoint for the web can play a 3D animation created elsewhere, but it cannot create the 3D animation itself. Build that animation in a supported desktop edition, then open or present the finished file on the web version when playback is all you need.

When should I insert a real 3D model instead?

Use the picture method for a fast, editable illustration made from chosen photos. Use a real 3D model when you need continuous rotation, preset model views, or model-specific animation.

Consideration Three rotated pictures Inserted 3D model
Setup Fast; uses familiar picture commands and three image files. Requires a compatible 3D asset and the 3D Models insertion command.
Face editing Each photo remains independently editable until you group the faces. What you can edit on the model’s surfaces depends on how the asset was created.
Perspective Uses preset or custom picture rotations. Supports continuous model rotation and preset views.
Animation Can use Morph between slide states. Can use dedicated 3D effects where the edition supports them.
Best fit A static cube illustration, photo collage, or controlled slide transition. A freely inspectable object, repeatable viewpoints, or a model animation.

Insert and control a genuine model

  1. Choose Insert > 3D Models.
  2. Select From a File to use a model stored on your computer, or From Online Sources when that option is available in your edition.
  3. Resize and align the model on the slide.
  4. Use the model controls to rotate it, choose a preset orientation, and use Pan & Zoom when you need to inspect framing.

The 3D Model Views gallery provides preset views for the inserted object. A model is the better technical choice when viewers must see more than the three faces that the picture construction exposes.

What should I do if the cube looks wrong?

The two side faces do not meet

Confirm that the first picture uses Off-Axis 1: Left and the second uses Off-Axis 1: Right. Then zoom in, use the Selection Pane to select the correct object, and nudge the faces until their inner edges touch. If the presets still leave a gap, open 3-D Rotation Options and make a small custom adjustment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The top face floats above the sides

Reapply Off-Axis 1: Top to the third picture and move it down until its lower edges meet both side faces. Check that the side faces have not been resized independently after the top was positioned.

The cube looks flat

Make sure all three faces have the intended rotations, then apply a Round top bevel through 3-D Format after grouping. Without an edge treatment, the eye may read the arrangement as three skewed images rather than one object.

I cannot select the face I need

Open the Selection Pane and select the object from the list. Temporarily move an obstructing face in the stacking order or hide it while you edit the lower object, then restore the order before grouping.

The animation moves unpredictably

For Morph, duplicate the completed slide first and change only the ending rotation or position on the duplicate. Large changes to object identity, grouping, or placement between slides can produce a less controlled transition; keep the same three picture objects in both states.

How do ribbon labels and edition differences affect these steps?

PowerPoint places picture-specific commands on the contextual Picture Format tab when a picture is selected. Some editions use slightly different labels or arrange the same commands in different groups, so look for Picture Effects, 3-D Rotation, and 3-D Rotation Options rather than relying on an identical ribbon layout.

The 3D-model workflow also varies by edition and channel. If Insert > 3D Models is absent, the three-picture method remains the practical route for a static cube, while model creation and 3D animation should be done in a desktop edition that exposes those features.

How do I prepare the cube for a presentation?

  • View the slide at the size your audience will see, not only at high zoom. A seam that is invisible while editing may appear on a projector or shared screen.
  • Check that the bevel does not cover faces, captions, or important details in the photos.
  • Keep the cube grouped for moving or scaling it as a unit, and ungroup only when a face needs correction.
  • Preview any Morph transition or 3D effect in the same PowerPoint edition that will run the presentation.
  • If the file will be edited by someone else, leave the faces grouped but keep a duplicate slide with the ungrouped construction as a recovery copy.

The finished object is still made from picture elements unless you replace it with a 3D model. That distinction determines whether viewers can inspect every side or only the composed faces you designed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the cube with only two pictures?

Two rotated pictures can suggest an open corner, but the documented cube illusion uses three visible faces: left, right, and top. The third face supplies the top plane that makes the corner read as a cube rather than a V-shaped pair of images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do my pictures rotate around different points?

Each picture has its own center and dimensions, so unequal sizing changes the apparent pivot. Resize the images to a consistent starting scale before applying the presets, then use custom 3-D Rotation Options only after the three faces have matching proportions.

Can I replace a photo after grouping the cube?

Yes. Select the grouped object and ungroup it, replace or edit the individual picture, realign the shared edges, and group the three faces again. Rechecking the corner is important because a replacement image may have a different crop or aspect ratio.

Does a picture cube provide a true 360-degree view?

No. The three-picture construction shows only the faces you compose on the slide. A 3D model is required for continuous rotation, additional sides, and the model-view controls available through PowerPoint’s 3D Model Views gallery.
