To create a mirrored volume in Windows 10 without third-party software, use Storage Spaces and select the Two-way mirror resiliency type. Windows writes each file to two separate physical drives, so the volume can remain available if one member drive fails. You need two eligible drives, preferably matching-capacity internal SATA HDDs or SSDs, and the pool’s usable capacity is limited by the smaller drive.
A mirror is immediate drive-failure redundancy, not a complete backup. Every write, deletion, accidental overwrite, corruption event, or ransomware encryption is duplicated. Keep a separate cloud, external-drive, or network-drive backup for file history and recovery after malware, user error, theft, or total PC loss.

What does a mirrored volume do in Windows 10?
A mirrored volume stores two copies of each file on different physical disks. Storage Spaces manages those copies as one drive letter, while Windows updates both members whenever data changes. If one member disk fails, the remaining copy can keep the volume’s data available.
This behavior is often described as “instant backup” because the second copy is created during normal writes rather than on a later schedule. It is more accurate to call it live redundancy: there is no independent point-in-time version to roll back to. A deleted save folder, a corrupted game installation, or encrypted files can be reproduced on both disks.

For that reason, use a mirror to reduce downtime from a single disk failure, then use a separate backup destination for historical recovery. Microsoft recommends cloud storage when convenient access from multiple devices matters, and external or network storage when the data set is large or internet access is limited.
Which Storage Spaces layout should you choose?
For an “instant” mirror on a Windows 10 desktop, Two-way mirror is the straightforward choice. The alternatives trade protection, capacity, or workload suitability for different requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Layout | Copies and drive-failure tolerance | Minimum or stated disk requirement | Best fit | Historical backup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Two-way mirror | Two copies; tolerates one failed drive | At least two extra drives for the Windows 10 machine | General-purpose live files, game libraries, and active projects where quick availability matters | No; changes are duplicated immediately |
| Three-way mirror | Three copies; tolerates two failed drives | Microsoft’s deployment guidance requires at least five physical disks for two-disk protection | Higher-availability data where the extra disks and capacity overhead are justified | No; changes are duplicated immediately |
| Simple space | No drive-failure resiliency | Disk-count minimum is not stated in the cited Microsoft guidance | Temporary or reproducible data that can be recreated | No |
| Parity | Parity-based resiliency rather than a two-copy mirror | Microsoft describes it as a separate resiliency option | More capacity-efficient sequential or archive workloads | No; it is still not versioned backup |
Two-way mirror gives up some raw capacity because each file occupies space on both members. The usable size is constrained by the smaller drive and by resiliency overhead, so matching capacities avoids wasting a large portion of the bigger disk.
What hardware and Windows 10 preparation are required?
- Two eligible physical drives: Internal HDDs, SSDs, and SATA devices are the clearest supported choices in Microsoft’s Storage Spaces guidance. Use a second drive with usable capacity at least as large as the data you intend to protect.
- A suitable connection: Storage Spaces needs to see individual physical disks. A drive can work in File Explorer yet be unavailable for a pool if an enclosure or hub hides the disk identity or reports it as removable.
- A plan for existing files: Creating a new pool and formatting its space is a reconfiguration operation. Copy anything important off the drives before selecting them, because files on disks chosen for the pool should not be treated as preserved.
- Current expectations for Windows 10: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided, so a mirror does not compensate for an unsupported operating system.
An internal SATA hard drive is usually the capacity-oriented choice; a SATA SSD is the speed-oriented alternative. The mirror does not make a slow HDD perform like an SSD, because each write still has to be committed to both members.
How do I create a two-way mirrored volume with Storage Spaces?
Use the Windows 10 Storage Spaces control panel when you are creating a new pool and volume. The procedure below follows Microsoft’s documented sequence.

- Connect the drives. Install the internal disks or attach enclosures that expose each disk individually. Do not continue until Windows can identify both physical devices.
- Open Storage Spaces. Select the Start button, type Storage Spaces, and open the matching control-panel result.
- Start a pool. Under Add a new Storage Pool, choose Add. Windows displays physical drives that it considers eligible.
- Select the member disks. Tick the drives that will belong to the pool, then choose the command to create the pool. Confirm that you selected the intended disks; pool creation is not a substitute for copying data elsewhere.
- Name the storage space. Enter a name that identifies its purpose, such as
GameDataMirrororProjectsMirror. - Choose resiliency. Set Resiliency type to Two-way mirror. Do not choose Simple if a disk failure must be survivable.
- Set the maximum size. Enter a maximum size appropriate for the pool. Remember that the mirrored layout consumes duplicate capacity and that the smaller member limits practical usable space.
- Assign a label and drive letter. Give the volume a recognizable label and select the drive letter applications will use.
- Select a file system. Choose the file system offered by the wizard for your Windows 10 workload, then proceed to create and format the volume.
- Verify the result. Open File Explorer and confirm that the new label and drive letter appear. Create a small test folder, copy a test file, and confirm that the volume is usable before moving irreplaceable data.
After creation, applications see one logical volume; they do not need separate paths for the two disks. Keep the Storage Spaces page available so you can check whether both physical members remain present and healthy.
How do I mirror an existing simple volume with DiskPart?
Microsoft also documents a DiskPart method for adding a disk to an existing simple volume. This is a mirrored-volume conversion, not a snapshot or a versioned backup, and it requires unallocated space on the target disk at least as large as the simple volume.
- Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
- Start DiskPart by entering
diskpart. - List volumes with
list volume, then identify the simple volume you want to mirror. - Select that volume with
select volume <number>, replacing<number>with the volume number shown by DiskPart. - Confirm that the target disk has enough unallocated space. The available unallocated area must be at least as large as the selected simple volume.
- Add the target disk with
add disk=<n>, replacing<n>with the target disk number. - When the command should remain active until synchronization completes, append the
waitoption as documented by Microsoft.
Double-check the volume and disk numbers before running the add command. Selecting the wrong volume or disk can alter the wrong storage configuration, and DiskPart does not provide the same visual safeguards as the Storage Spaces wizard.
Is a mirrored volume a complete backup?
No. A mirror protects against the specific event of one member drive becoming unavailable; it does not create an independent historical copy.
- Accidental deletion: deleting a file writes the deletion to both members.
- Ransomware or other malware: encrypted files are mirrored as encrypted files.
- Corruption: damaged data can be duplicated before you notice the problem.
- Whole-machine loss: theft, fire, power damage, or a failed motherboard can remove access to both drives at once.
Use at least one backup destination outside the mirror. Cloud storage is convenient when you need access from several devices. An external hard drive or network drive is more practical for large libraries or locations with limited internet access. Keep that destination independent of the Storage Spaces pool so a mistake or attack affecting the live volume does not automatically destroy the recovery copy.

How should I choose between an HDD, SSD, and USB enclosure?
Choose the medium according to capacity, speed, and how reliably Windows exposes it as a physical disk.
Internal SATA HDD
An internal SATA HDD is the usual capacity-first option for a two-way mirror. Match its usable capacity to the other member and leave room for the mirrored workload to grow.
Internal SATA SSD
A SATA SSD is the speed-first option for frequently accessed game files, project assets, or applications. Two SSDs still provide redundancy rather than a historical backup, and the slower member controls mirrored write behavior if the pair is mixed.
USB-attached storage
USB hardware can work only when the enclosure and controller expose each disk in a way Storage Spaces accepts. Microsoft warns that many hubs and enclosures conceal individual disks or mark them as removable; in that situation, the drive may appear in File Explorer but not in the list of eligible physical disks. Connect the enclosure directly, check whether each disk is listed separately in Storage Spaces, and use internal SATA hardware when USB presentation remains ambiguous.
What capacity and performance trade-offs should I expect?
A two-way mirror does not provide the sum of both drive capacities as usable space. Because every block has a duplicate, practical capacity is based on the smaller member after resiliency overhead. A larger second disk therefore does not let you store data beyond what the smaller disk and the selected maximum size support.

Mirroring also adds write work: each write must reach both members. Reads can remain available from the surviving member after a failure, but the design goal is continuity rather than maximum benchmark speed. Parity can use capacity more efficiently for sequential or archive workloads, yet it is a different resiliency choice and is not the simplest path when the priority is an immediately available duplicate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do when a member drive fails?
A two-way mirror is designed to tolerate one failed member, so the volume can remain available from the surviving copy. Treat that state as an urgent recovery condition rather than proof that the data is fully backed up: the remaining disk is now a single point of failure until the mirror is restored.
First identify which physical disk is unavailable in Storage Spaces, avoid deleting or reformatting the pool, and make sure your independent backup is current. Replace or repair the failed hardware using Microsoft’s current Storage Spaces recovery procedure for your Windows build, then allow synchronization to complete before treating the mirror as redundant again.
Does the Windows 10 end-of-support date change this plan?
It changes the risk profile, not the Storage Spaces steps. Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, so the operating system no longer receives free security fixes or technical assistance from Microsoft. A mirrored volume can still reduce downtime from a disk failure, but it cannot patch vulnerabilities or protect files from malware that exploits an unsupported system.
Keep the independent backup disconnected or otherwise protected when it is not being used, test that important files can be restored, and plan an operating-system upgrade or supported platform where your hardware and applications allow it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will creating a Storage Spaces pool preserve files already on the selected disks?
Treat the selected disks as destinations for a new storage configuration, not as containers whose existing files will be preserved. Copy important data to another location before creating the pool or formatting its storage space.
Why does my USB drive appear in File Explorer but not in Storage Spaces?
Some USB hubs and enclosures hide the individual physical disks or identify them as removable media. Storage Spaces may reject those devices even though Windows can browse them; connect the enclosure directly and verify that each disk is listed separately as an eligible physical drive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I combine an HDD and an SSD in one mirror?
Microsoft lists HDDs, SSDs, and SATA devices as supported media, but the guidance does not establish the performance behavior of mixed-speed members. Matching drive types and usable capacities makes the result easier to size and predict.
Does a mirrored volume protect my files if the whole computer is stolen?
No. Both copies are inside the same machine and can be lost together through theft, fire, or major hardware damage. Maintain a separate cloud, external-drive, or network-drive copy for that scenario.
