Discord roles are named permission bundles that also control how members are identified in a server. To create one, open the server menu, choose Server Settings → Roles → Create Role, configure only the permissions required, and save. Assign it from the Roles settings’ Manage Members area or from a member’s profile. The role hierarchy determines which users and roles you can manage, while channel and category overrides can change effective access. You can preview access with View Server As Role. Discord’s official API supports role deletion with MANAGE_ROLES, but the currently reviewed Help Center documentation does not publish a verified desktop or mobile click path for deleting a role.
What is a Discord role, and why does it matter?
A role is a reusable bundle of server permissions and display settings. Assigning the role to a member gives that member the role’s server-wide permissions, subject to any channel-specific overrides. Roles also establish a hierarchy: their vertical order determines who can manage other members and which roles can be edited or moved.

Every server has an @everyone role. Discord describes it as the template for all new roles. A newly created role starts at the bottom of the hierarchy, immediately above @everyone, so it normally cannot manage existing higher roles until an authorized administrator moves it.
Think of a role as both an access policy and an organizational label. A carefully designed role gives a moderator exactly the tools needed for moderation without accidentally granting unrelated administrative control.

How do I create a role in Discord?
On Discord’s desktop or browser interface, use the server-level Roles settings. You need sufficient authority to create the role; Discord says users with Manage Roles can create and modify roles positioned below their own highest role.
- Open the server’s dropdown menu.
- Select Server Settings.
- Open Roles.
- Choose Create Role.
- Enter a role name and review its display settings.
- Open the role’s Permissions tab and select only the permissions required for its job.
- Save the role.
The role is initially placed just above @everyone. That position is important: creating a role does not automatically let it manage members, assign other roles, or outrank existing roles.
What should I decide before creating it?
- Purpose: Write down the single job the role is intended to perform, such as moderating messages or accessing a private discussion area.
- Least privilege: Start with no permissions and add only those needed. A broad permission can affect the entire server.
- Scope: Decide whether the role should work server-wide or only in selected channels through overrides.
- Hierarchy: Place the role below the people who must manage it, and above members who should be affected by its permissions only when that is deliberate.
- Testing: Plan to use View Server As Role before assigning the role widely.
How do Discord role permissions work?
Role permissions are evaluated at the server level and then adjusted by channel rules. A member’s effective server permissions come from the member’s roles together with @everyone. Channel permissions can then override those server permissions.
Use the smallest permission set
Choose permissions by task rather than by title. For example, a volunteer who only needs to moderate messages should not automatically receive permissions for server configuration or role management. Keeping roles narrow makes later troubleshooting easier because each permission has a clear reason to exist.
Manage Roles has a built-in ceiling
Manage Roles allows a user to create and modify roles below that user’s own highest role in the hierarchy. It does not let the manager edit or control an equal or higher role. Discord also states that a manager can assign only permissions that the manager personally possesses; Manage Roles is not a way to grant powers you do not have.

Administrator is an exceptional permission
Discord calls Administrator its most powerful role permission. It grants all permissions and bypasses channel restrictions, so it should be assigned only when the person genuinely needs full server control. A narrowly scoped role is safer for routine moderation, event management, or channel access.

Which role design fits a typical server?
The following patterns are planning examples, not Discord-created defaults. Adjust each one to the people, channels, and risks in your server.
| Role design | Least-privilege approach | Hierarchy position | Scope | Management considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discussion moderator | Message and member-management permissions required for moderation; omit unrelated administration | Below the administrators who supervise it | Server-wide permissions, with channel overrides where needed | Can manage only members and roles lower than the moderator’s highest role |
| Private-channel access | Use the minimum permissions needed to view or participate | Below staff roles that must control access | Usually channel-specific through overrides | Check category synchronization so inherited access matches the intended design |
| Event coordinator | Permissions for the event workflow only; avoid Administrator | Below the roles that supervise server configuration | May combine server permissions with event-channel overrides | Preview the combined result before assigning it to a large group |
These designs differ along the practical axes that matter most: least privilege, hierarchy position, server-wide versus channel-specific scope, ability to manage members, category inheritance, and ease of testing.
How do I assign a role to someone?
Use the role’s member-management screen when you want a deliberate, auditable workflow, or use the member profile shortcut for a quick assignment.
Assign from Role settings
- Open the server dropdown and choose Server Settings.
- Open Roles and select the role you configured.
- Use Manage Members.
- Select the member and assign the role.
Assign from a member’s profile
- Open the member’s avatar or profile in the server.
- In the role section, select the plus-sign control.
- Choose the role to assign it.
If the role does not appear as assignable, check both permissions and hierarchy. The person making the assignment must be allowed to manage that role, and the target member cannot be protected by an equal or higher role position.

Why can’t I manage or move a role?
The usual cause is hierarchy, not a broken setting. Discord orders roles from top to bottom, and a member can affect users with roles lower than that member’s highest role. Equal or higher roles are protected.
Check the manager’s highest role
Compare the role you want to edit or move with the manager’s highest role. The target role must be below the manager’s highest role. Having Manage Roles without the correct hierarchy position is insufficient.
Check the target member’s highest role
When assigning or changing roles on a member, the member’s role position also matters. A manager cannot use a lower role to control someone whose highest role is equal to or higher than the manager’s highest role.
Check the permission ceiling
Even when the hierarchy allows the change, the manager cannot configure permissions that the manager does not possess. If a permission is unavailable or cannot be granted, an administrator must make the change or first provide the necessary authority.
Be careful with Administrator
Administrator bypasses channel restrictions and grants every permission. Giving it merely to solve a hierarchy problem can turn a routine role assignment into full server control.

How do channel and category overrides change access?
Server permissions are not the final answer for a channel. Discord applies channel-level overrides for @everyone, roles, and individual members, and those channel permissions override server permissions.
Understand the evaluation layers
- Start with the member’s server permissions from assigned roles and
@everyone. - Apply the channel’s override for
@everyone. - Apply role-specific channel overrides.
- Apply any individual-member override.
This is why a member can have a server permission yet still be unable to use a particular channel, or can receive access in a channel where the server-level role appears restricted.
Know what category synchronization does
Category permissions propagate automatically to channels that are synchronized with that category. A channel that is not synchronized keeps its own settings until you resynchronize it. When access appears inconsistent across channels in one category, check whether the affected channel is synced before changing the role itself.

How can I check what a role can see before assigning it?
View Server As Role lets server owners and members with Administrator preview the experience associated with a role. It is useful for finding an accidental channel exposure before real members receive the role.
- Open Server Settings.
- Choose Roles.
- Select the role you want to inspect.
- Use the View Server As Role control.
- Review visible text channels, voice access, and available server-management options.
- Repeat with multiple roles selected when you need to test their combined result.
The preview is a verification step, not a replacement for least-privilege planning. If the view is broader than intended, return to the role’s permissions or the relevant channel and category overrides, then preview again.

How do I delete a role in Discord?
Discord’s current developer documentation confirms a Delete Guild Role operation that requires the MANAGE_ROLES permission. A successful API request returns HTTP 204, and Discord emits a Guild Role Delete event. The Help Center pages reviewed for this guide do not publish a current, click-by-click desktop or mobile deletion path, so it would be misleading to present an unverified menu sequence as official.
If you administer a server through an integration, use the documented Delete Guild Role operation and ensure the integration has Manage Roles and the hierarchy needed to act on the target role. If you are working only in the Discord client, verify the deletion control in your current client version rather than relying on an old tutorial; interface labels can change.
Before deleting, perform these checks
- Confirm the role is not still needed for a channel or category access rule.
- Check whether any automation or integration identifies the role by its ID.
- Make sure you are acting on the intended role, especially when names are similar.
- Record the role’s permissions and position if you may need to recreate an equivalent role.
What should I check when a role change does not work?
- The role is missing from the assignment list: Confirm you have Manage Roles and that the role is below your highest role.
- A permission appears ineffective: Inspect the target channel’s overrides; channel rules can override server permissions.
- Only some channels behave differently: Compare category synchronization status. Unsynced channels retain their own overrides.
- A member cannot be changed: Compare the member’s highest role with the manager’s highest role. Equal or higher positions are protected.
- A role grants too much access: Remove unnecessary server permissions, review channel overrides, and use View Server As Role before reassigning it.
- A role cannot grant a desired permission: The manager may not personally possess that permission; Manage Roles cannot be used to grant powers the manager lacks.
What is a safe role-management routine?
- Define the job the role must perform and list the minimum permissions.
- Create the role at Server Settings → Roles → Create Role.
- Configure its Permissions tab without adding unrelated administrative powers.
- Place it below the people who must supervise or modify it.
- Review category and channel overrides that could change the result.
- Use View Server As Role, including a combined-role preview when appropriate.
- Assign it first to the intended members through Manage Members or the profile shortcut.
- Recheck access after any hierarchy, category, or channel change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Discord member have a role even when no custom role is assigned?
Yes. The @everyone role provides the server’s baseline role model, and Discord uses it as the template for new roles. A custom role adds to that baseline rather than replacing it.
Can a member’s effective access come from more than one role?
Yes. Discord aggregates permissions from the member’s assigned roles and @everyone before channel overrides are applied. That is why testing a single role and testing a combination of roles can produce different previews.
Why can a role look correct in the server settings but still fail in one channel?
A channel override may explicitly change the result, or the channel may be unsynchronized with its category. Inspect the channel’s overrides and synchronization status before rebuilding the role.
What does Discord’s role-deletion event mean for an integration?
The official Delete Guild Role operation emits a Guild Role Delete event after a successful deletion. An integration that tracks roles can use that event to remove its stored reference instead of assuming the role still exists.
