To crop a PDF, change the page boundary so unwanted margins no longer display or print; to resize one, either scale it for a particular print sheet or permanently change its page dimensions. Those operations are not interchangeable. Cropping can leave the original content recoverable, while print scaling does not rewrite the PDF and permanent resizing may scale the content itself. Use Acrobat’s web crop tool for a quick batch crop, Acrobat’s print controls for output-only scaling, or PDFsam Visual when files must stay on your computer. Always preserve the original, inspect every page after a batch operation, and choose the workflow that matches your privacy and print requirements.
What is the difference between cropping and resizing a PDF page?
Cropping changes the visible or printable boundary of a page. Resizing changes how large the page is shown, printed, or stored as a document page. The word “resize” therefore describes two different jobs: temporary print scaling and a permanent page-dimension change.

PDF pages can contain several geometric boxes. The CropBox defines the area viewers display and commonly use for printing. The MediaBox is the physical page size. In professional print files, the TrimBox marks the finished cut size and the BleedBox marks artwork that extends beyond that cut for trimming.
A crop is normally a page-box adjustment, not an eraser. Adobe’s Acrobat reference guide says, “Cropping does not reduce file size because information is merely hidden, not discarded.” Text, images, links, and other objects outside the new boundary can therefore remain in the file and may be revealed by changing the page box again.

What “resize” can mean
When you print, Fit scales the entire page to the selected paper’s printable area. Shrink oversized pages reduces only pages that are too large, leaving smaller pages at their original size. Custom Scale applies an exact percentage. None of these print choices changes the PDF’s stored page dimensions.
A permanent resize rewrites the page dimensions, such as converting a document to A4 or Letter. Depending on the application, you can also scale the page contents so text and graphics fit the new dimensions.

How do I crop PDF pages in Acrobat on the web?
Acrobat’s browser tool lets you define a crop rectangle and apply it to one page, a selected range, or every page.
- Open Acrobat’s Crop PDF tool and select or drag your PDF into the upload area.
- Wait for the first page to appear with a crop rectangle. Drag the handles until the rectangle contains the content you want to keep.
- Choose the page range. Select All when the same crop should apply to every page, or specify only the pages that need it.
- Select Crop to create the edited PDF, then download or save it according to the options shown.
Check the result at several pages, not only the preview page. A single rectangle can be unsuitable when pages have different orientations, source sizes, or margin widths.
What are the privacy implications of Acrobat’s web cropper?
The web service uploads the file to Adobe’s servers. Adobe says the service deletes the uploaded file unless you sign in to save it, but a cloud workflow may still be inappropriate for contracts, medical records, identity documents, unreleased manuscripts, or other confidential material. For sensitive PDFs, use a local application instead.
How do I scale a PDF to fit A4 or Letter when printing?
Use the print dialog when your goal is a correctly sized sheet of paper rather than a permanently changed PDF. In Acrobat, open File > Print, then find Page Sizing & Handling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Select the printer or choose a PDF printer if you want a new, print-scaled PDF.
- Choose the target paper size, such as A4 or Letter, in the printer’s paper settings.
- Under Page Sizing & Handling, choose the option that matches the job.
- Preview the pages and verify that no text, signatures, barcodes, or edge graphics fall outside the printable area.
- Print or create the output PDF.
| Print option | Use it when | What happens to the source PDF |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | The whole page must fit the selected paper. | The printed output is enlarged or reduced; the source page dimensions stay the same. |
| Shrink oversized pages | Large pages should be reduced but smaller pages should retain their size. | Only oversized pages are scaled for output; the source is unchanged. |
| Custom Scale | You need a precise percentage. | The chosen percentage controls output size; it does not rewrite the source page box. |
Printer margins can still clip content even after you select Fit. The printable area is often smaller than the nominal A4 or Letter sheet, so use the preview and keep critical content inside a safety margin.
How do I permanently resize a PDF to A4, Letter, or another paper size offline?
PDFsam Visual provides a local workflow for changing page dimensions. It offers standard formats including A2, A3, A4, and Letter, with an option to adapt page contents to the new dimensions.
- Open PDFsam Visual and load the PDF from your computer.
- Choose the resize operation and select the target format, such as A4 or Letter. Set the orientation if the interface presents that choice.
- Enable the option to adapt or scale page contents when the existing text and graphics must fit the new page dimensions.
- Review the preview for clipped edges, excessive whitespace, or content that has become too small to read.
- Save the result as a new PDF, keeping the original file unchanged.
PDFsam Visual’s vendor statement is: “Everything runs locally so your files are never uploaded and no internet connection is needed.” Local processing is useful for confidential documents and for work on machines without an internet connection. Licensing and supported platforms can change, so check the current product terms before deployment.
Can PDFsam Visual crop every page at once?
Yes. Its crop workflow blends pages into a common view, lets you drag the crop area, applies that area across the pages, and saves a new PDF locally. Batch cropping is fastest when pages share the same dimensions and orientation; mixed documents need a page-by-page inspection afterward.
Which tool should I use for cropping, print scaling, or permanent resizing?
The right choice depends less on the brand than on where the operation must occur, whether the file may leave the device, and whether you need a new page geometry or only a print result.
| Need | Best-fit workflow | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Quick crop in a browser | Acrobat’s web Crop PDF tool | The document is uploaded to a cloud service. |
| Apply one crop to all similar pages | Acrobat web with the All page-range choice, or PDFsam Visual locally | A common crop can cut content on pages with different layouts. |
| Print on A4 or Letter without rewriting the file | Acrobat’s print dialog with Fit, Shrink oversized pages, or Custom Scale | Printer margins may still clip the output. |
| Change the stored page size | PDFsam Visual resize with a standard target size | Scaling contents can make small text harder to read. |
| Keep confidential files offline | PDFsam Visual | Use the current local licensing and platform requirements. |
| Split, merge, rotate, or mix pages | PDFsam Basic | Its cited feature list covers those tasks; dedicated crop and resize functions are documented for PDFsam Visual. |
PDFsam Basic is free and open source and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is useful for page organization, but do not assume that its listed split, merge, extract, rotate, and mix functions include the crop and resize controls documented for Visual.

How do I remove white margins without cutting important content?
Start with a copy of the PDF and identify whether the white area is merely an unwanted viewer margin or part of a print design. Then use the smallest crop that removes empty space while leaving a safety margin around content.
- Open a representative page and locate the furthest text, image, signature, barcode, and annotation edges.
- Set the crop boundary outside those edges rather than directly against them.
- Apply the crop to a selected range first when the document contains multiple layouts.
- Inspect portrait, landscape, rotated, and unusually sized pages separately.
- Only after the sample pages look correct should you apply the crop to all compatible pages.
For professional printing, do not automatically remove every white border. Preserve the intended TrimBox and BleedBox: the TrimBox represents the finished trimmed page, while the BleedBox identifies artwork that must extend beyond the trim line. Removing those areas can produce an incorrectly prepared print file.

What can go wrong after cropping or resizing?
One crop cuts content on some pages
Pages assembled from different scans or orientations may not share a common margin pattern. Revert to the original, divide the file into groups with matching layouts, and crop each group separately. If only a few pages differ, process those pages individually.
Text or signatures are clipped after printing
Preview the printed output, not only the on-screen page. Choose Fit or a smaller Custom Scale percentage, and confirm the printer’s printable area. Keep signatures, barcodes, and edge notes away from the physical sheet edge.
The PDF is still large after cropping
That is expected: cropping hides content but does not discard it. Use a separate PDF optimization or rasterization workflow when file size is the actual objective, and verify that searchable text, vector quality, links, and annotations still meet your needs afterward.
The resized page looks correct but the text is too small
Scaling a large page down to A4 or Letter reduces every element proportionally when content adaptation is enabled. Check readability at normal viewing size; if text becomes impractical, reflow or redesign the source rather than applying a more aggressive reduction.

Hidden material must never be recoverable
A crop is not a security control because the underlying objects may remain in the file. Use a dedicated permanent-redaction process for confidential text, and inspect the redacted output independently before distribution.

- Open the first, middle, and last pages and inspect every changed edge.
- Check pages with different sizes, rotations, or orientations separately.
- Confirm that text remains selectable when selectable text is required.
- Test hyperlinks, annotations, form fields, signatures, and barcodes that touch the crop boundary.
- Print a sample page at the intended paper size when physical output matters.
- Verify that A4 and Letter settings match the recipient’s region and printer.
- Keep the untouched original and record whether the operation was a crop, print scale, or permanent resize.
- For print production, confirm TrimBox and BleedBox requirements with the printer before removing borders.
- For confidential files, confirm that the chosen workflow did not upload the document.
Frequently asked questions
Can I crop a PDF without installing software?
Yes. A browser-based cropper can handle a quick job, including applying one crop to all pages. It requires uploading the document, so an offline tool is safer for confidential material.
Will cropping remove hidden text from a PDF?
No. Cropping normally changes the displayed page boundary while leaving objects outside that boundary in the file. Anyone who needs irreversible removal should use a dedicated redaction workflow and verify the exported result.
Why does my PDF look different on screen and on paper?
The viewer displays the PDF page box, while the printer also imposes a non-printable margin. Use the print preview with the actual paper size and choose Fit or a suitable custom percentage to account for that hardware limit.
Is A4 the same physical size as Letter?
No. A4 and Letter have different proportions and dimensions, so converting between them can create extra whitespace or scale content unevenly in appearance. Select the recipient’s actual paper standard and inspect the resulting margins before distribution.
Can PDFsam Basic crop pages?
PDFsam Basic’s cited feature list covers splitting, merging, extracting, rotating, and mixing pages. The dedicated crop and resize workflows are documented for PDFsam Visual, so use Visual when page geometry is the task.
