How to Customize Steam Recommendations and Hide Games You Don’t Want

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Steam’s Customize controls to tune each Store surface, and use Ignore (sometimes labeled Not Interested) on a game’s product page to remove that title from future recommendations and featured spots. Search and browse filters can narrow results by tags, features, operating system, and language, but Steam does not document a single global switch that blocks an entire genre everywhere.

Which Steam control should you use?

Steam has several discovery systems rather than one recommendation switch. Choose the control according to what you are trying to change:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Control Scope What it filters or changes Where to find it
Ignore / Not Interested One product Removes the title from future recommendations and featured spots, according to Valve documentation The game’s Store product page; also available on items in the Discovery Queue and Recommendation Feed
Customize A Store home or browse section Owned games, Early Access, software, downloadable content, pre-purchases, and operating-system-specific results Customize controls on the Steam Store home page and other Store sections
Discovery Queue settings The Discovery Queue Whether to include Early Access, unreleased titles, and operating-system-specific titles Customization controls inside the Discovery Queue
Interactive Recommender exclusions The Interactive Recommender Recently played games that you do not want considered by that recommender Exclusion controls within the Interactive Recommender
Search and browse filters Search results and catalog browsing Tags, Steam features, operating systems, and languages Filter controls on Steam search and browse pages

These scopes matter. Ignoring a title is different from filtering a Store section, and an exclusion made inside the Interactive Recommender is not automatically the same as a Steam-wide Ignore action.

Think in four separate questions

Before changing anything, identify whether you need to hide one title, remove a product type, narrow an active search, or change the games considered by one recommender. The first is a product-level setting. The second belongs to the Store area where the unwanted listing appears. The third affects the current search or browse results. The fourth is a recommender-specific exclusion. Applying the wrong control can make it seem as though Steam ignored your preference when the setting simply has a narrower scope.

Hide one unwanted game from recommendations

Use the product page

  1. Open the game’s page in the Steam Store.
  2. Find the action labeled Ignore or Not Interested. Steam can change the wording or placement as the Store interface is updated.
  3. Select the action and confirm if Steam presents a confirmation prompt.

Valve says an ignored product is excluded from future recommendations and featured spots. This is the most direct control when one title, rather than an entire category, is the problem.

Ignore a title while browsing

You do not have to leave a discovery surface to apply the setting. Valve documents the same action for products shown in the Discovery Queue and in the Recommendation Feed. When you see an unwanted listing there, use its Ignore or Not Interested control instead of opening several settings pages.

What Ignore does not promise

Ignore is documented as a recommendation and featured-placement exclusion. Valve does not promise that the title will disappear from every Steam page. A direct search, a link someone sends you, a library view, or another page that lists products can still show it. If a game remains discoverable through search, that does not by itself mean the Ignore setting failed; search filtering and recommendation suppression are separate systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignore also does not uninstall the game, remove ownership, alter your wishlist, or erase the title from your account. It is a visibility preference for discovery surfaces. You can still open the product page intentionally when you need its system requirements, updates, community information, or support details.

Customize the Steam Store home page and browse sections

Open the visible Customize controls

  1. Go to the Steam Store home page or to the Store section you want to tune.
  2. Look for the visible Customize control in that section.
  3. Review the category toggles and turn off the types of products you do not want included in that surface.
  4. Return to the section and check the resulting listings. Different Store areas can expose different controls.

Valve documents toggles for several product categories:

  • Games you already own.
  • Early Access titles.
  • Software.
  • Downloadable content.
  • Pre-purchases.
  • Results specific to an operating system.

Use these switches when the issue is the kind of listing Steam is showing. For example, disabling owned games can keep recommendations focused on unowned purchases, while disabling software or downloadable content prevents those product types from occupying a game-discovery section. These are Store-area controls, not a universal genre blacklist.

Operating-system filtering

Operating-system options are useful when a recommendation is irrelevant because it cannot run on your computer. Apply the operating-system toggle in the Store section or browse view where you are seeing the mismatch. The Discovery Queue has a related operating-system option, but its setting is handled within that queue.

Why a setting may seem inconsistent

Customize controls are tied to the Store home page or browse section that exposes them. A choice made in one section should not be treated as a promise that every other section uses the same product-type filters. If software disappears from one carousel but still appears in search, check the search filters separately. Likewise, turning off owned games on a Store surface does not remove those games from your library or from a direct title lookup.

Control the Discovery Queue

Adjust what the queue can include

  1. Open the Discovery Queue from the Steam Store.
  2. Open the queue’s customization controls.
  3. Choose whether to include Early Access titles.
  4. Choose whether to include unreleased titles.
  5. Choose whether to include titles for particular operating systems.
  6. Continue through the queue and use Ignore on individual products that you never want recommended again.

The queue has its own scope. Changing its options does not replace the product-level Ignore action or the controls for other Store sections.

About the queue’s documented size and refresh

Valve’s original Discovery Queue description called it a personalized list of 12 titles that refreshed daily with new and top-selling releases. Those details come from Valve’s 2014 Discovery Update. Steam’s Store interface and catalog have changed since then, so treat the 12-title figure and the daily-refresh description as historical documentation rather than a current guarantee.

The queue’s historical description also helps explain why it can feel different from a normal search: it was designed as a curated pass through personalized, new, and popular releases. Use its inclusion switches for broad eligibility, then use Ignore for exceptions. Do not expect a queue preference to rewrite the Recommendation Feed or every home-page module.

Use the Interactive Recommender without changing your global Ignore list

Exclude recently played games for this recommender

Valve says the Interactive Recommender lets you exclude some recently played games. By default, the games available for exclusion come from your global Steam Ignore list. This is useful when a game you played recently is distorting a particular recommendation session but you do not want to change its status across Steam.

Understand the persistence difference

Toggling exclusions inside the Interactive Recommender does not change the Steam-wide Ignore setting. If you want a title excluded from Steam’s recommendations and featured spots generally, open that title’s Store page and apply Ignore or Not Interested there. Use the recommender’s exclusion control for a local recommendation adjustment; use the product-page action for a title-level Steam setting.

This distinction prevents a common mistake: excluding a recently played game in the recommender and then assuming it has been blocked everywhere. Conversely, using Ignore on the product page is broader than a one-session adjustment, so reserve it for titles you genuinely do not want in Steam’s recommendation surfaces.

Filter Steam search and browse results toward games you want

Use tags instead of trying to block a whole genre globally

Steam search and browse pages support filters for tags, Steam features, operating systems, and languages. Select the tags that describe the games you want, then combine them with feature and platform filters to reduce irrelevant results. This is the practical way to steer discovery toward a style, mode, or audience when you are browsing for something new.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Enter a search term or open a browse page in the Store.
  2. Open the filter controls.
  3. Select relevant tags.
  4. Add Steam-feature filters when you need a particular capability.
  5. Choose supported operating systems and languages.
  6. Review the results and Ignore individual titles that continue to appear in recommendation surfaces.

Tags are search and browse criteria. They are not documented as a permanent account-wide block list. If you never want one particular game suggested, use Ignore as well as any search filters you prefer.

Filters are especially useful when you are looking for a positive match rather than trying to suppress everything you dislike. Combining a tag with a feature, language, and operating-system choice can reduce noise without claiming that Steam has permanently learned a genre prohibition. Reapply or adjust those filters whenever you start a new browsing task.

Why Steam keeps showing certain games

Signals used on Store surfaces

Valve’s Steam Visibility documentation says Steam automatically customizes elements of the Store for every user and lets player preferences drive visibility. The documented inputs include:

  • Games you have played.
  • Games on your wishlist.
  • Games your friends play or have wishlisted.
  • Recommendations made by friends.
  • Regional top sellers.
  • New releases and updates.
  • Curators you follow.

This explains why a title can appear even when you did not search for it. A friend’s activity, regional popularity, a new update, or a followed curator can all provide a reason for a Store surface to display it.

How the Interactive Recommender adapts

Valve describes the Interactive Recommender as adapting to individual behavior as you play games or revisit them. It is periodically retrained using broader changes in releases and player behavior. The recommender is one discovery element among several, alongside the Discovery Queue and other Store surfaces, so changing one surface may not produce identical results everywhere.

That layered design means repeated exposure is not necessarily evidence that Ignore failed. First identify the exact surface, then apply the control belonging to that surface. If the same title appears in a different module, use the product-page Ignore action and confirm that you are not looking at a direct search or library listing, which the documented recommendation exclusion does not cover.

Choose the right fix for common problems

Recommendations contain too many games you already own

Open Customize on the Store home page or the affected browse section and turn off the option for games already owned. This addresses the product category in that Store area. It does not remove owned games from your library or prevent a direct search for them.

You do not want Early Access or unreleased games

For general Store pages, use the Early Access control in Customize. For the Discovery Queue, open its own settings and disable Early Access and unreleased titles there. The queue and the general Store do not share every setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Software or downloadable content is crowding out games

Use the corresponding software or downloadable-content toggle in the Customize controls for the Store section you are viewing. If one specific DLC product is being recommended, apply Ignore on its product page.

The same title appears in the Recommendation Feed

Open the title’s product page and use Ignore or Not Interested. Valve explicitly includes Recommendation Feed items in the places where the ignore action is available. The documented effect is removal from future recommendations and featured spots, not deletion from every Steam listing.

You want to stop a genre, theme, or tag

Steam’s documented controls do not provide a universal account-wide genre block. Use tags and other filters on search and browse pages to narrow what you see, then ignore individual titles that violate your preference. If the unwanted results are coming from a particular Store section, apply that section’s Customize controls as well.

A recently played game is influencing the Interactive Recommender

Use the Interactive Recommender’s exclusion controls for that session. Remember that this does not modify the global Ignore list. Apply Ignore on the game’s Store page only when you want the title excluded from Steam recommendations and featured spots more broadly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find the control described here

Steam changes Store layouts and labels over time. Look for the control in the specific surface where the item appears: Customize on a Store section, Ignore or Not Interested on the product card or page, queue settings inside the Discovery Queue, and exclusion controls inside the Interactive Recommender. A missing option can also mean that the current page exposes a different subset of filters than another Store area.

What these settings do not change

  • They do not uninstall a game or remove it from your Steam library.
  • They do not guarantee that a title will vanish from direct search results or every page that links to it.
  • They do not create a documented global block for an entire genre or tag.
  • They do not make Discovery Queue settings identical to Store home-page settings.
  • They do not turn an Interactive Recommender exclusion into a Steam-wide Ignore action.
  • They do not remove a title from a friend’s recommendation, a curator page, or another intentionally opened product link in every context.

Historical context for Steam’s discovery tools

Valve’s 2014 Discovery Update reported more than 1,300 new titles over nine months and more than 3,700 titles available on Steam at that time. It also described the personalized 12-title Discovery Queue. These figures show why Valve introduced layered discovery and filtering tools, but they are historical counts, not current Steam catalog totals. Current recommendations should be interpreted through the controls and personalization signals Steam exposes now.

A practical setup for cleaner recommendations

  1. Start on the Store home page and use Customize to remove product types you never want to browse, such as owned games, software, downloadable content, or pre-purchases.
  2. Open the Discovery Queue and disable Early Access, unreleased titles, or operating-system categories that do not fit your needs.
  3. When a particular title appears, open its product page and choose Ignore or Not Interested.
  4. Use search and browse filters for tags, Steam features, operating systems, and languages when you are actively looking for something.
  5. If recently played games are skewing the Interactive Recommender, use its exclusion controls without changing your global Ignore list.
  6. Recheck the specific Store surface where the unwanted recommendation appeared; settings are scoped to the surface that provides them.

For a cleaner result, make one change at a time and revisit the exact page that prompted the complaint. This makes it easier to tell whether a product-type toggle, a queue setting, a search filter, or Ignore produced the change. Keep the broadest controls for broad problems and the title-level control for individual games.

The result is a layered approach: section filters remove broad categories, search filters shape active browsing, and Ignore handles individual titles. That matches the controls Valve documents without assuming that one setting can block every appearance of a game across Steam.

Can I block an entire genre or tag on Steam?

Steam does not document a universal account-wide genre or tag block. Use tags, Steam-feature, operating-system, and language filters on search and browse pages to narrow what you want, then Ignore individual titles that still appear in recommendation surfaces.

Why does an ignored game still appear in Steam search?

Ignore is documented as a recommendation and featured-placement exclusion, not as a guarantee that a title disappears from direct search, library views, links, or every other Steam page. Search filtering and recommendation suppression are separate systems.

What can Steam’s Customize controls hide?

Depending on the Store section, Customize can filter games you already own, Early Access titles, software, downloadable content, pre-purchases, and operating-system-specific results. These controls apply to the section where they are shown, not automatically to every Steam surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I remove Early Access and unreleased games from the Discovery Queue?

Open the Discovery Queue’s own customization controls and turn off Early Access and unreleased titles. The queue also provides operating-system choices. These settings are separate from the Customize controls on the general Store home page.

Does Interactive Recommender exclusion change my Steam Ignore list?

No. Valve says exclusions made inside the Interactive Recommender do not change the Steam-wide Ignore setting. Use the recommender exclusion for a local adjustment; use Ignore or Not Interested on the product page for broader recommendation and featured-spot exclusion.

Why are Steam recommendations influenced by my friends?

Valve lists played and wishlisted games, friends’ games and wishlists, friend recommendations, regional top sellers, new releases and updates, and followed curators as inputs to Store personalization. A title can therefore appear without you having searched for it.

What should I do if the Ignore button is missing?

Check the exact surface where the title appears. Look for Customize on a Store section, Ignore or Not Interested on the product card or product page, queue settings inside the Discovery Queue, and exclusion controls inside the Interactive Recommender. Steam can change layouts and expose different filters in different sections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use Customize for broad Store-section categories, search filters for active browsing, Discovery Queue settings for queue eligibility, and Ignore / Not Interested for a specific title. Interactive Recommender exclusions are local to that recommender, while product-page Ignore is the documented way to remove a game from future recommendations and featured spots more broadly. No documented setting blocks an entire genre everywhere or guarantees that an ignored game disappears from direct search.
