You can customize weapons in Fortnite in two different ways: in Battle Royale, use a Weapon Mod Bench to attach mods to eligible weapons; in Creative or UEFN, build creator-authored weapons with much broader control over their behavior and presentation. The Battle Royale option is limited to weapons that support the Modular tag, and the available mods, bench access, and costs can change by season. UEFN customization is for island creators, not a way to permanently modify the weapons in your Battle Royale inventory.

What does weapon customization mean in Fortnite?

“Weapon customization” refers to two separate systems, depending on whether you are playing a match or making an island. A Battle Royale player modifies an eligible weapon at a Weapon Mod Bench by choosing from the mods available for it. A Creative or UEFN creator can configure a weapon template and, with Verse, change aspects of its behavior at runtime.

The distinction matters: a bench mod adjusts an existing weapon within the options the game makes available, while a custom UEFN weapon is part of a creator-built experience. A mod bench does not give a player unrestricted control over damage, appearance, or every other weapon property.

Question Battle Royale Weapon Mod Bench Creative or UEFN custom weapon
Who uses it? A player modifying an eligible weapon during play. An island creator authoring a weapon or a player using that creator’s island.
What can change? Available attachment-style attributes, such as recoil, magazine capacity, or aiming behavior, depending on the weapon and current mod options. Documented template settings include damage, range, fire rate, spread, muzzle flash, sound, mesh, name, description, and HUD icon; Verse can also add runtime behavior.
What is compatible? Weapons supporting the Modular tag; several weapon classes are excluded. Epic documents four baseline weapon templates: assault rifle, submachine gun, pistol, and shotgun.
What governs cost or setup? Current-season access, mod availability, and in-game cost. Creator setup, configuration, testing, and potentially Verse scripting.

How do I customize a weapon in Battle Royale?

Find an available Weapon Mod Bench, check that your weapon is eligible, and choose from the mods offered for that weapon. Treat the bench as an in-match interaction: it is not an account-wide crafting menu or a permanent weapon-building feature.

  1. Check the weapon. The weapon must support the Modular tag. If it belongs to an excluded class, the bench will not make it moddable.
  2. Find an available bench. Bench availability and locations can change with the season, so an older map guide may no longer be accurate. Use the current match’s map or in-game information rather than relying on a fixed location from a previous season.
  3. Review the current options and cost. The available mods and their costs are seasonal. Confirm what the bench offers before committing, instead of assuming a price or mod list from an earlier season still applies.
  4. Choose for the tradeoff you want. For example, a recoil-focused choice can favor controllability, while a magazine-focused choice can favor capacity. The exact options depend on the weapon and the current rules.
  5. Use the modified weapon according to its strengths. A mod changes selected handling or capacity characteristics; it does not turn an incompatible weapon into a compatible one or remove the weapon’s underlying role.

Epic’s Chapter 5 Season 1 announcement described mods as a way to “reduce recoil, increase mag capacity, and more,” while also making clear that not every mod works with every weapon. That compatibility limit is central: seeing a mod in the game does not mean every weapon can equip it.

Which Fortnite weapons can use mods?

In Battle Royale, the key eligibility signal is support for the Modular tag. Epic identifies several classes that cannot be modded: melee weapons, dual-wielded weapons, unique mythic weapons, and weapons released before the Modular tag was used.

  • Melee weapons: excluded from the player weapon-mod system.
  • Dual-wielded weapons: excluded.
  • Unique mythic weapons: excluded, even if another weapon in a broadly similar category accepts mods.
  • Older weapons released before the Modular tag was used: excluded under the stated compatibility rule.

Weapon pools change, so a list of compatible weapon names can become stale. Check the weapon and bench in the current season rather than assuming that a weapon type—or a weapon that accepted mods in an older season—will always qualify.

What do Fortnite weapon mods change?

Mods alter selected characteristics of a compatible weapon, such as recoil, magazine capacity, or aiming behavior. The exact set is not universal: compatibility depends on the weapon, and the game’s current mod selection determines which changes are available.

Think of a mod as a focused adjustment, not a full redesign. A choice that emphasizes recoil control may suit a different play style from one that emphasizes capacity or a preferred aiming behavior. These adjustments involve tradeoffs, and the best choice depends on how you use the weapon; the available evidence does not establish one best attachment combination for every weapon or situation.

Do not assume Battle Royale mods change the weapon’s name, mesh, sound, base damage, or scripted abilities. Those broader authoring controls belong to Creative and UEFN weapon creation, not the player-facing bench system described here.

Where is the Fortnite Mod Bench?

There is no season-independent location to rely on. Weapon Mod Benches are in-game locations, and their availability or placement can change; the default mod cost also follows the current Battle Royale season and is subject to change.

For a current match, check the information available in-game and use the live map rather than an old walkthrough. If a bench location from a guide is absent, that does not necessarily mean the feature has been removed: the guide may describe a different season or map state. The published information here does not establish a universal coordinate or permanent price.

Can I create custom weapons in Fortnite Creative or UEFN?

Yes. Epic documents a Weapon Mod Bench device that island creators can place and configure, as well as weapon templates for deeper custom-weapon authoring. These are creator tools: they let you build an island experience, not edit a player’s standard Battle Royale weapon inventory.

Use a Weapon Mod Bench device for a player-facing mod loop

A creator can place the Creative Weapon Mod Bench device and configure its access and mod-cost behavior. This gives players a bench interaction inside the island. The device is the appropriate route when the goal is to let players choose mods on weapons within a custom experience, rather than authoring an entirely different weapon.

Use a weapon template for deeper changes

Epic’s Weapon Templates documentation provides four baseline templates in its v41.00 ecosystem release in 2025:

Template Template identifier
Assault Rifle assault_rifle_template
Sub Machine Gun sub_machine_gun_template
Pistol pistol_template
Shotgun shotgun_template

These are baseline starting points, not a claim that every possible weapon category has a documented template. A creator selects a supported template and then edits the settings and assets the authoring workflow exposes.

What can UEFN creators change on a weapon?

For the documented templates, creators can adjust core weapon behavior and presentation. The available controls go well beyond the attachment-level choices available to a Battle Royale player.

  • Combat behavior: damage per shot, range multipliers, maximum range, and fire rate.
  • Accuracy and aiming: aim-down-sights spread and crouching spread.
  • Effects and audio: muzzle flash and weapon-fire sound.
  • Identity and appearance: remove the default mesh, add a replacement mesh, and set the weapon’s name, description, and HUD icon.
  • Runtime logic: Verse hooks can respond to equip and unequip state, and runtime changes can implement behavior such as temporarily doubling damage.

Because these settings affect the weapon’s underlying behavior, creators should test the resulting experience in its intended context. A value that changes damage, range, fire rate, or spread affects play differently from a visual or audio replacement. Verse-driven effects also require the creator to account for when the behavior starts and ends, rather than treating a temporary effect as a permanent template setting.

Which approach should I use?

Use Battle Royale’s Weapon Mod Bench if you are a player looking to tune a compatible weapon during a match. Use the Creative device if you are building an island where players should make similar mod choices. Use weapon templates when you need to author the weapon itself, including its core stats, presentation, or scripted runtime behavior.

Your goal Best-fit system Why
Adjust a weapon found during a Battle Royale match Weapon Mod Bench It applies available mods to eligible in-match weapons.
Let island players interact with a bench Creative Weapon Mod Bench device Creators can place the device and configure access and mod-cost behavior.
Change damage, range, fire rate, spread, or weapon presentation UEFN weapon template Template authoring exposes deeper weapon properties than the player bench.
Add a temporary or event-driven behavior UEFN with Verse Verse hooks can react to equip state and apply runtime changes.

The practical boundary is control: Battle Royale offers seasonal, weapon-dependent choices within the game; Creative and UEFN give island creators broader authorship, along with the setup and testing work that entails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep a Battle Royale weapon mod after the match ends?

The documented bench system is an in-match interaction, not an account-wide crafting feature. Whether a particular mode carries anything forward is not established as a universal rule, so check that mode’s current rules rather than expecting a saved loadout.

Can I give a Fortnite weapon a new skin at a Mod Bench?

The player-facing bench is described as changing attributes such as recoil, magazine capacity, or aiming behavior. Replacing a weapon mesh and setting its HUD icon are creator-side UEFN capabilities, not ordinary Battle Royale bench options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Verse to use a Weapon Mod Bench in my island?

Epic documents a configurable Creative Weapon Mod Bench device, so a bench-based player interaction does not inherently mean you are authoring a Verse weapon. Verse is relevant when you want custom runtime behavior such as equip-state reactions or temporary stat changes.

Are the four UEFN weapon templates the only weapons available in Fortnite?

No. The four names identify the baseline custom weapon templates documented for the v41.00 ecosystem release in 2025; they are not a complete inventory of Fortnite’s in-game weapons. Template availability and authoring options may differ as UEFN evolves.
