The only reliable way to reduce internet data use for a large game such as GTA VI is to reuse an installation that already exists locally. On PS5, Sony supports transferring game data between consoles on the same network and storing PS5 games on USB extended storage or a compatible M.2 SSD. Those methods can prevent a later re-download. They do not make the first digital download smaller.
Rockstar lists GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, with eligible pre-loading from November 12 at local midnight. Pre-loading gives seven extra days to finish downloading, but it does not reduce the bytes delivered. A faster broadband plan, Ethernet cable, SSD, or retail box changes speed, storage or convenience—not the size of the initial transfer.

What does “reduce data usage” mean for GTA VI?
There are three separate problems, and each has a different solution:
- Internet bytes: how much data must arrive from a server. Nothing in the published GTA VI platform guidance shows a way to shrink the first digital installation.
- Elapsed time: how long the transfer takes. A faster line, a less congested connection or an Ethernet link can change this, but not the game’s byte count.
- Local storage: where an existing installation is kept. A second PS5, USB extended-storage drive or compatible M.2 SSD can preserve files so they do not have to be downloaded again later.
That distinction matters on a capped connection. If the files have never existed on a console or drive you control, the initial download remains an internet transfer. If an owned PS5 already contains them, a supported local copy can avoid obtaining that same copy from the internet. Sony documents the transfer and storage methods; it does not publish a GTA VI-specific percentage of data saved by them.

When and where is GTA VI launching?
Rockstar’s platform-and-editions guidance schedules GTA VI for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Eligible pre-loading starts at local midnight on November 12, giving a seven-day calendar window before launch. The dates come from Rockstar’s announcements, not a bandwidth test. Rockstar Games Customer Support should be checked for account, edition and platform eligibility as launch approaches.
Neither that guidance nor the reviewed Xbox listing publishes an official, platform-specific final download size. A PC Gamer report attributed a 210 GB PS5 figure to the third-party PlayStation Game Size account. That is a report, not a Sony or Rockstar confirmation, and it cannot establish the Xbox size. Do not use 210 GB as a confirmed quota calculation.

How can a PS5 reuse GTA VI files from another PS5?
If another PS5 already has the installation, Sony’s local Data Transfer feature is the strongest way to avoid a second internet download. The consoles must use the same network and the same account; a Wi-Fi connection is supported, and Sony also describes using a LAN cable. A local copy does not remove account checks, licensing requirements or any later patches that still need online access.
Prepare both consoles
- Sign in to the account that owns the game on both PS5 consoles.
- Connect both consoles to the same home network. Sony supports Wi-Fi and wired networking; a cable can improve transfer speed in the wireless setup Sony describes.
- Install system updates and leave both consoles powered on. Keep the source PS5 available until the transfer completes.
Start the transfer on the destination PS5
- On the destination console, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to find the source PS5 and select the game data to copy.
- Allow the consoles to finish. Do not disconnect the network or power during the copy.
The method copies data that is already local; it is not a way to install a game that no console owns. The destination account still needs the appropriate purchase or entitlement, and updates can require an internet connection after the base files arrive.
Can an existing storage drive move between PS5 consoles?
Sony also documents connecting an existing USB extended-storage drive to another PS5 and moving a compatible M.2 SSD between PS5 consoles while using the same account. These are reuse options for files already stored on the drive. They do not authorize access for a different account or eliminate update downloads.
Should a PS5 game stay on an M.2 SSD or a USB drive?
Choose an M.2 SSD when the goal is to keep a PS5 game playable without moving it back first. Choose USB extended storage when lower-cost or portable archiving matters more than immediate play. Both options preserve an installation; neither reduces the first download.

M.2 SSD: playable storage
Sony’s compatibility guidance calls for a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD with a supported physical format and an effective heat-dissipation mechanism. Capacities from 250 GB to 8 TB are specified, and a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster is recommended. That recommendation is not a promise that every drive with the number will work; the drive must also meet the PS5’s size and cooling requirements. A compatible M.2 installation can hold and launch PS5 games. It is therefore the practical choice when the game is replayed frequently and the console’s internal space is needed for other titles. Check the drive’s dimensions, interface and heat spreader as a set rather than relying on capacity or speed alone.
USB extended storage: archive storage
Sony specifies SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later and capacities from 250 GB to 8 TB for PS5 extended storage. A USB drive used for this purpose must be formatted, and formatting erases its existing data. Back up anything important first.
Sony states that “PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage.” A PS5 game can be stored there, but it must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before it can run. That extra copy is still useful: retaining a large installation on the drive can prevent a later full re-download.

Which storage choice fits a capped connection?
- Use an M.2 SSD if the game must launch directly from the additional drive.
- Use USB extended storage if the priority is keeping an installation off the console until it is needed.
- Use neither as a “download accelerator.” Storage capacity and interface do not change the bytes received from the internet.
Does pre-loading reduce GTA VI data usage?
No. Pre-loading changes when the download happens, not how much arrives. For eligible purchases, the announced November 12 start gives seven days before the November 19 launch, which is useful for a slow line or a busy household connection. The same installation data still has to be transferred.
Enable automatic downloads and leave enough free space before the pre-load window if the platform offers those controls. A pre-load can finish overnight or several days early, but scheduling it outside peak hours is a timing decision, not a data-saving technique. Any launch-day patch is also separate from the base pre-load and may require additional online data.

Will faster internet or Ethernet use fewer gigabytes?
A faster internet plan can finish the same download sooner. It does not make the game smaller, and changing to a different connection may simply move the usage to another data allowance. Ethernet is most clearly useful for Sony’s local PS5 transfer instructions, where a wired link can improve transfer conditions; it is not a byte-reduction method for the initial server download.
For a capped plan, identify which connection is actually charged before starting. A phone hotspot, public network or second home line can change who supplies the data, but it does not establish that fewer total bytes are transferred. The final size and update requirements remain platform-controlled.
How should storage be prepared before pre-loading?
Check capacity before November 12 rather than discovering a shortage after the download begins. On PS5, open Settings > Storage to review console, USB and M.2 space. Sony documents moving existing games to extended or M.2 storage and deleting games that are no longer needed. Preserve frequently replayed large installations when possible; deleting one can create another full download later.
When a game’s Customize control is available, Sony says it can manage portions of that game’s data. No published guidance establishes that GTA VI will offer selectable components, so do not assume that removing a campaign, language pack or multiplayer module will reduce its installation. Wait for the game’s own options to appear.
What is the physical GTA VI edition, and can it avoid a download?
Rockstar says the physical Standard Edition is a code-in-box with no disc. Rockstar’s support wording is explicit: “A disc will not be included in the box.” Buying the box is therefore not an offline installation method; the code must be redeemed and the game data obtained through the platform.
Match a purchased code to the region of the platform account, as Rockstar advises. A retail code can determine ownership, but it does not establish a smaller download or supply a second local copy.

What can Xbox owners do today?
Xbox Series X|S is an announced GTA VI platform, but the relevant Xbox listing does not provide a readable transfer or storage procedure here. Its support page rendered a JavaScript requirement rather than accessible compatibility details. Consequently, do not rely on an unverified menu path, assume that any USB drive can play a Series X|S title, or buy a particular expansion device solely on that assumption.
Xbox owners should verify Microsoft’s current official transfer and storage compatibility guidance for Series X|S before moving files or purchasing hardware. Until those instructions are confirmed for the exact console and game, the safe conclusions are the same: pre-loading changes timing, and a connection upgrade changes speed rather than data volume.

You have never downloaded GTA VI
Plan for the initial digital transfer. Pre-load as soon as eligibility opens, check storage first and schedule the download when the connection is available. No cited method removes that first internet delivery, and the final platform-specific size is not officially published.
You have another PS5 with the installation
Use Sony’s same-network, same-account Data Transfer, or move an existing compatible storage device according to Sony’s instructions. This is the clearest route to avoiding a second internet copy, while still allowing for account validation and later updates.
You delete and reinstall large games often
Keep the installation on a compatible M.2 SSD for direct play, or archive it on USB extended storage if copy-back time is acceptable. Select capacity based on the games you actually retain, not on the unconfirmed 210 GB report.
Your concern is launch-day congestion, not a data cap
Pre-load early and use the fastest stable connection available. Ethernet can be sensible for a local PS5 transfer or a consistently congested wireless environment, but it should not be presented as reducing the download allowance.

You are on Xbox Series X|S
Use the platform’s official pre-load controls and verify current Xbox storage and network-transfer instructions before buying hardware. Avoid assuming that PS5 procedures or USB behavior carry over to Xbox.
What common “data-saving” advice gets wrong?
- “The 210 GB size is confirmed.” It is a third-party-attributed report for PS5, not a publisher-confirmed size, and it says nothing about Xbox.

Can I install GTA VI from the physical Standard Edition without an internet connection?
No. Rockstar describes the physical Standard Edition as a code-in-box package with no disc, so the code still needs to be redeemed and the game data downloaded through the platform.
Will a PS5 local transfer also move my saved games?
