Telegram’s official account-removal process is permanent: open the deactivation page in a non-mobile browser, enter the phone number in international format, retrieve the confirmation code from the Telegram app (not SMS), and confirm deletion. Telegram says the action cannot be undone. If you only want a break or a data clean-up, leave the account active and remove selected chats, contacts, media, drafts, profile pictures, stories, or call history instead. Telegram also offers automatic self-destruction after a period of inactivity, set to at least 18 months by default.
How do I delete my Telegram account right now?
Use Telegram’s web authentication flow rather than deleting the app. The account must still be accessible on a logged-in device because the confirmation code is delivered inside Telegram.

- Open the official page. In a non-mobile browser, go to Telegram’s account-deactivation page. Telegram’s FAQ specifically recommends a non-mobile browser for this process.
- Enter your phone number. Use the number attached to the Telegram account and write it in international format, including the country code.
- Read the code in Telegram. Telegram sends the sign-in confirmation to the Telegram app, not by SMS. Open Telegram on a device where the account is already logged in and enter the code on the web page.
- Sign in and review the warning. The page authenticates your account before showing the deletion confirmation.
- Confirm deletion. Submit the final confirmation only after saving anything you need. Telegram states that this action cannot be undone.

What do I need before starting the deletion?
The most important prerequisite is access to Telegram itself. The web page is not an SMS-only recovery form: it expects a code delivered to the app, so a person who has lost access to every logged-in device may be unable to complete the normal flow.

- The account’s phone number: enter the number in international format, not merely the local version shown in your address book.
- A non-mobile browser: Telegram recommends using one for the deactivation page.
- Copies of anything you may need later: review important chats and files before confirming because cloud data associated with the account is removed and the action is irreversible.
- A plan for other people: if contacts need records from a conversation, tell them before deletion. They may already hold their own copies of messages.
What does Telegram delete?
Telegram says account deletion removes the account’s cloud-stored data. Its FAQ and Privacy Policy describe that scope as messages, media, contacts, groups, and every other piece of data stored in Telegram’s cloud.

Messages and media held in your Telegram cloud account are removed with the account. That includes the cloud copy of conversations and files, rather than only the app installation on one phone.

Contacts and synchronized data
Telegram removes the contacts and other synchronized information stored in its cloud for the deleted account. Deleting the app alone does not perform this server-side account deletion.
Groups and channels you created
Groups and channels created by the deleted account remain available to their members, but the deleted account is no longer present as their creator. Existing administrators keep their administrative rights. Deleting your account therefore does not erase a community that other people use.
What can other people still keep after I delete my account?
Deletion does not retract copies that already exist in other people’s chats. A contact may still have a copy of a message or media in their own Telegram history, and people can continue chatting in groups associated with the deleted account.
This distinction matters: deletion removes the data Telegram stores for your account, but it is not a recall mechanism for material that another user has already received, copied, or retained. The FAQ’s account-deletion guidance explains the consequence at telegram.org/faq.

Can I deactivate Telegram temporarily without deleting my account?
Telegram documents permanent account deletion, automatic self-destruction after inactivity, and selective data-removal controls rather than a reversible “pause account” operation. For a temporary break, keep the account and use the controls that match what you actually want to remove.
If you only want to stop using Telegram
Do not confirm the web deletion form. Leaving the account in place lets you return without creating a new identity and losing the account’s history. Automatic self-destruction is separate: it occurs only after the account has been inactive for the period configured in Settings.
If you want less data but still need the account
Telegram allows many items to be removed individually from Settings or from chat controls. You can clean up selected messages and chats, synced contacts, cloud drafts, profile pictures, stories, and call history without terminating the account.
If you want a fresh start
Permanent deletion followed by registration creates a new Telegram user. Telegram says the new signup has no prior history, contacts, or groups, so it is not a way to restore the deleted profile under a new login.

Telegram can delete an account automatically when the user does not come online for the configured inactivity period. The current default is at least 18 months. Telegram says the account’s cloud messages, media, contacts, and other stored data are deleted when that self-destruction occurs.
You can change the inactivity period in Telegram’s Settings. The exact option is an account self-destruction or inactivity setting; review the selected period before relying on it, especially if you sign in only occasionally. Telegram’s Privacy Policy recorded the 18-month default in its September 29, 2024 update, and the policy page records a later update on August 21, 2026. Should I delete now or wait for automatic self-destruction?
Choose based on control and timing. Manual deletion is deliberate and starts when you confirm it; inactivity self-destruction is a delayed trigger that depends on you remaining offline.

Neither route restores deleted cloud data. In either case, copies already held by other users can remain, and a later signup is a new account with no previous history, contacts, or groups.
Can two-factor authentication delay deletion?
Telegram’s API documentation describes a specific 2FA exception. Deletion is immediate when no two-step-verification password is involved or when the correct password is supplied. If a qualifying 2FA password was changed recently and is not supplied, Telegram can delay deletion for seven days.
During that seven-day window, confirming the phone number can cancel the pending deletion. This edge case is documented in Telegram’s account-deletion API notes at core.telegram.org/api/account-deletion. It does not turn ordinary deletion into a reversible process; it is a security hold applied in the stated password-change situation.
What should I do before pressing the final button?
Use this short pre-deletion check. It is easier to postpone confirmation than to recover information after Telegram has removed the account.
- Open important conversations and files. Identify anything you may need for work, family, travel, gaming groups, or legal records.
- Save or export needed material. Keep copies in a place you control before starting the web flow.
- Check group and channel responsibilities. If other people depend on a group or channel you created, make sure they know the account will disappear and that existing administrators can continue managing it.
- Tell contacts who need records. Other participants may have their own copies, but they cannot retrieve the cloud data belonging to a deleted account through your login.
- Verify the phone number and logged-in device. The code arrives in Telegram, not by SMS, so do not sign out everywhere before completing authentication.
- Confirm only when ready. Telegram’s warning is permanent; reinstalling the app or registering again will not restore the old account.
What if the confirmation code does not arrive?
First, check Telegram on every device where the account is currently logged in. The official flow sends the code to the Telegram app rather than to SMS. If you cannot access any logged-in session, the normal deactivation page may not be able to authenticate you.

Recheck the phone number in international format and make sure you opened the official address: my.telegram.org/auth?to=delete-account. Do not enter a code from an unrelated message or disclose your Telegram login code to another person.

For ordinary confirmed deletion, Telegram says the action cannot be undone. The only cancellation path described in Telegram’s technical documentation is the seven-day security delay that can apply after a recent 2FA-password change when the password was not supplied. In that qualifying case, confirm the phone number during the delay to cancel the pending deletion.
What happens if I sign up again later?
A later signup creates a new Telegram user rather than restoring the deleted profile. Telegram says the new account has no prior history, contacts, or groups. Other people’s copies of earlier messages may still exist, but they are not restored into the new account’s cloud history.

Does Telegram send the deletion code by text message?
No. The normal web flow delivers the confirmation code inside the Telegram app on a logged-in device. An SMS-only approach does not satisfy the documented authentication step.

Will deleting my account remove a group that I created?

Does deleting my account erase copies in another person’s chat?
No. Account deletion removes the cloud data associated with your account, but it does not retract copies already present in other users’ chats. Those users may continue to have access to what they already received.
Is deleting the app the same as deleting the account?
No. The documented deletion action is completed through Telegram’s authenticated web page. Removing the app from a device does not itself confirm account deletion; automatic self-destruction is governed separately by the inactivity setting.
