It takes place during The Feat of the Brotherhood in Yak T’el, near Mamook. Watch the order and direction of the attack markers, handle stack and spread mechanics correctly, free chained allies, and stand in Wuk Lamat’s blue area for the final multi-hit attack.
Make sure you have the right Gulool Ja Ja fight
This guide covers Gulool Ja Ja’s Glory, the level 95 Main Scenario encounter in The Feat of the Brotherhood. It is fought with allies, not as a solo duel. Search results may also point to the earlier one-on-one fight against the Dawnservant; its mechanics are different. This is not the level 93 dungeon Worqor Zormor, either.
Square Enix identifies Gulool Ja Ja as the founder and ruler of Tuliyollal in its Dawntrail story overview. For the quest objective and location, see the Consolegameswiki walkthrough or Game8’s quest guide.
How to handle Gulool Ja Ja’s attacks
Most of the fight is about reading telegraphs rather than maximizing uptime. When markers appear in a sequence, remember their order; when they show a direction, move to the safe side and return to attacking once the danger resolves. The mechanics below follow the Consolegameswiki encounter walkthrough.

#1 Best Overall
Roaring Star: dodge the delayed fireball lines
Roaring Star deals party-wide magical damage, then sends four spinning fireballs into delayed line attacks. After the group hit, watch where the fireballs aim and move into a safe portion of the arena before the lines resolve.
Coiled Strike: read the shadows and blade symbols
Two blade symbols and rotating shadows telegraph wide cones. Use the markers to identify the paths the cones will cover, then move into the narrow safe area behind the symbols and outside the shadowed routes. Don’t assume the first opening you see will remain safe if the shadows are still moving.

Celestial Flame: remember the order of the circles
Three groups of fire blades mark circle AoEs that resolve in the order they appeared. Note the sequence, avoid the first marked area, then move through the space it leaves to dodge the next circles as they go off.
Dual Pyres: track the two half-arena cleaves
Glowing swords marked with one pip and then two pips signal successive half-arena cleaves. Watch which sword lights first and move away from its threatened half; reposition for the second cleave when its marker appears. The crossed line AoEs that follow are a separate danger, so keep moving out of their paths rather than treating the cleaves as the end of the mechanic.
Steelfold Strike: avoid both marker types as the boss jumps
Circle markers and glowing X markers telegraph attacks that repeat in different locations as Gulool Ja Ja jumps. Read both sets of markers, avoid the circles and lines, and adjust to the new locations after each jump instead of returning to a spot that was safe earlier.
Outer Wake and Fallen Star: leave the donut, then spread
Outer Wake is a donut-shaped AoE: move out of its dangerous ring. Fallen Star follows with markers on you and other allies. Once the donut resolves, spread away from one another so the marked attacks do not overlap.
Lay of the Sun: group for the stack
Lay of the Sun is a multi-hit stack attack. Gather with the party so its damage is shared rather than taking it alone.

During Oathbind and Noble Trail, several allies are chained while a line attack threatens them. Target and destroy the Oath of Fire chains quickly to release them. Koana contributes a powerful action against the chains, which eases the apparent damage check, but continue attacking the chains rather than leaving the allies bound.

Survive Battle Breaker and Saga of Dawn and Duty
After a knockback and stun, Wuk Lamat creates a blue area. Move into it and remain there to mitigate Gulool Ja Ja’s multi-hit ultimate. The attack deals repeated damage, so heal through it as needed. The sequence then repeats; keep applying the same responses until the boss is defeated.
Keep the fight manageable
- Use healing and mitigation for unavoidable party-wide or repeated damage, especially Roaring Star and the ultimate.
- Prioritize the mechanic over chasing damage when ordered markers or moving shadows are on screen.
- Respond to the mechanic’s purpose: spread for Fallen Star, group for Lay of the Sun, destroy the chains, and stand in Wuk Lamat’s blue area.
The encounter guide does not establish a special gear comparison or numerical stat requirement for this fight, so there is no evidence-based item-level target to add here.
If you meant the earlier solo duel
The solo Dawnservant duel is separate from Gulool Ja Ja’s Glory. Prima Games’ guide to that duel recommends choosing Easy or Very Easy after a loss, using job healing abilities along with Second Wind or potions, and staying close enough to react to Dual Blows. It also covers the duel’s Coiled Strike, Burning Sun, and Brawl Ender; those tips should not be substituted for the party mechanics above.
