Beat Lace by treating the encounter as a timing-and-spacing duel: avoid trading blows, jump over her committed lunge, stop attacking when she parries, and punish only after she finishes an attack. When an opening is unclear, back off and wait for the next one.
How to reach the Deep Docks Lace fight
The route walkthrough describes acquiring Swift Step in Deep Docks; it provides dash and sprint. From there, follow the route toward the lower-right gate and use the movement and lever sequence to reach Lace’s arena. The route details are in the GameFAQs Deep Docks walkthrough.
Some routes differ. The Hollow Knight Wiki’s Lace entry reports that using a Simple Key passage can bypass this first encounter; Lace may appear later, and her journal entry can also be completed afterward. A boss guide calls the mobility ability “Swift Stride,” but the route walkthrough and wiki use “Swift Step”; this article uses Swift Step and does not treat them as separate abilities.
How to fight Lace safely
Keep enough distance to read her attacks
Lace is an agile, close-range fencer who can close distance quickly. Stay far enough away to see her wind-up, but not so far that you cannot approach during a recovery. Button-mashing and trading hits are poor default strategies; wait for her to commit to an attack, then respond.

Jump over her lunge
When Lace lunges horizontally, jumping over her is the clearest defensive option described by the guides. If your spacing makes a jump unsafe, a dash past her is another option. Once she has passed and is recovering, take a short punish, then reset your distance. A guide also recommends pogoing over the lunge, but a regular jump is the simpler response if you are still learning the timing. Stop when she raises her weapon to parry
Her frontal parry blocks attacks and can lead to a counter. Do not keep striking into it. If you can safely move behind her, attack from the rear; otherwise, wait for the stance to end and look for her next committed move.

Jump the double slash and take the brief opening
When she performs two slashes, watch for the pause after the sequence. The guide identifies this recovery as an opportunity for a few hits, but keep the punish short rather than mashing. Be ready to retreat as soon as she resumes moving.
Leave the marked area during the aerial attack
When Lace charges an aerial combo and marks an area, move clear before the dive lands. Attack after she lands and finishes the move. One or two safe hits is a conservative punish; a separate guide suggests two or three after the downward dive, but that is advice rather than a guaranteed hit count.

Use a stagger to heal or attack
A stagger gives you time to deal damage or heal. The number of hits you can safely fit depends on your position and timing, so choose healing if you need it and leave yourself room to react when Lace recovers.

- Prioritize avoiding damage over squeezing in another hit.
- After a lunge, slash sequence, or dive, take a short punish only if Lace is visibly recovering.
- If you cannot tell whether an attack sequence has ended, move away and wait for a clearer opening.
- Do not attack into the frontal parry; waiting is safer than trying to get behind her when the route is uncertain.
The wiki’s Lace entry also notes route variations and historical bug fixes. The sources cited here do not establish whether those details vary by current game build or platform, so use the fight cues above rather than relying on an exact hit count or timing guarantee.
