The key to the fight is identifying the real Lamenter when it creates copies: quickly hit each target and watch the boss health bar. The copies disappear in one hit; the real Lamenter remains and loses health.
Where to find Lamenter
Lamenter waits at the end of Lamenter’s Gaol, in the Southern Shore area of the Realm of Shadow. The dungeon is reached from Charo’s Hidden Grave. The encounter is part of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion; Bandai Namco’s DLC access notice explains how to enter the expansion.

How to reach Lamenter’s Gaol
From the Charo’s Hidden Grave Site of Grace, head northwest through the water area, where Gravebirds may attack, until you reach the Gaol entrance. Progress inside requires two keys. The route includes locked gates, a narrow bridge, a Living Jar room, and a ladder leading down to the boss fog.
- Enter the Gaol and follow the dungeon route until you find the chest before the thin bridge. Open it for the Upper Level Key.
- Use the key to continue through the locked route. In the Living Jar room, search the chest for the Lower Level Key.
- Continue through the dungeon, use the lower-level key on the relevant locked door, and descend the ladder to reach the boss fog.
The written route details available in the Game8 Lamenter’s Gaol walkthrough do not spell out every turn, and it notes a hidden wall along the progression. If you reach a dead end, use that walkthrough’s map and images to check the wall and route rather than assuming a key is missing. PowerPyx also confirms that Lamenter is at the bottom of the Gaol and that the dungeon has two locked doors requiring keys (PowerPyx boss guide).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to identify the real Lamenter
Lamenter’s attacks are described as mostly short-range melee, but the defining challenge is its clone sequence. When Lamenter disappears and copies appear, attack each target quickly and check the boss health bar. The copies die in one hit; the real Lamenter stays present and its health bar drops when struck. PowerPyx suggests using melee attacks or a fast spell such as Swift Glintstone Shard to test targets.
- When copies appear, move quickly from one target to the next.
- Land a quick hit on a target, then check whether the boss health bar has decreased.
- Continue testing targets until the health bar confirms you have found the real Lamenter.
- If the copies return before you finish the fight, repeat the identification process.
The useful choice is whichever attack you can land quickly while keeping track of the health bar. The cited guide does not establish that any particular build, weapon, summon, or consumable is required, and it does not give a dependable timing window for eliminating Lamenter before another clone sequence.
What Lamenter drops
Both Game8 and PowerPyx list Lamenter’s Mask as the boss reward.
