To finish the Mettaton EX fight without killing him, survive until the show rating reaches 10,000 after his arms and legs have fallen off, or 12,000 if he still has them. The rating condition—not a required heart shot—is the key to ending the encounter nonlethally.
What “defeat” means in this fight
If you are aiming for a nonlethal route, the goal is to meet the show’s rating condition while staying alive. Which rating threshold applies?
- 10,000: the target once Mettaton’s arms and legs are gone.
- 12,000: the target while his limbs are still present.
Check his condition before treating 10,000 as the finish line. The Wiki says his limbs fall off as the battle progresses whether or not you shoot his heart.

How to reach the rating and survive
- Keep playing through the turns. Mettaton’s limbs fall away as the fight advances, so you do not need to shoot his heart to make that happen.
- Use actions that increase the rating. Rating gains can occur during your actions and during Mettaton’s turn, according to the encounter reference. Follow the action prompts and watch the displayed rating rather than assuming one action guarantees a particular increase.
- Avoid getting hit where you can. The reference notes that taking damage penalizes the rating increase. Staying clear of attacks can help you build the score more efficiently, though it is not a guaranteed shortcut.
- Endure attacks until the applicable threshold is reached. Shooting the heart ends a turn earlier, but the reference does not make it necessary for the nonlethal finish.
Why this advice is qualified
The thresholds and fight details here are described by the community-maintained Undertale Wiki, not verified official developer documentation. The core distinction is clear—10,000 with limbs gone, 12,000 with limbs intact—but finer turn-by-turn optimization may depend on the encounter details represented by that reference. Avoid relying on a fixed sequence as a guaranteed method.
