Clear the flying Esslings, then glide toward the Thing in the Mist and plunge when its white outline appears. Player reports say the opening is brief, so commit promptly rather than stopping to make small adjustments. This is a community-reported tactic, not an officially verified timing guide.
Where to find the Thing in the Mist
The story encounter takes place on Serenity Island, where the boss was introduced as one of the island’s new Esslings in the official preview: Serenity Island preview. It is associated with the Chapter 2 quest Thunder Rumbles Through the Mist. A Pear-Pal search result uses the variant wording “All Days Lost in the Mist,” so follow the quest title shown in your current game if exact localization differs.
How to beat the boss
The detailed combat sequence below comes from player reports, not published official move timings. Treat it as a practical approach rather than a guaranteed script.
- Advance the story quest until the boss encounter begins.
- When the flying Esslings appear, clear them before concentrating on the boss.
- Use Nikki’s gliding ability to approach and get into position above or close to the Thing in the Mist.
- Watch for the boss’s white outline. When it appears, plunge promptly to land the hit.
- Repeat the approach when the opening returns. The reporting player advises against pausing to make minor positioning adjustments, which may cost time and hearts.
The sources do not establish exact attack names, phase timing, or a fixed damage window. If the white-outline cue or sequence behaves differently in your game, use the visible opening as your guide rather than relying on a precise timer.

Story fight and repeat challenge access
The story encounter is linked to Thunder Rumbles Through the Mist on Serenity Island. For a replay, the official version 1.5 update notice lists Thing in the Mist among the Dimensional Rift challenges available through the Challenge Portal on Dream Star Isles: version 1.5 update notice. The notice described both Serenity Island content and Challenge Portal levels as permanent at that time. Because this is version 1.5 information, check the current in-game menus if a later update has changed navigation.
If attacks seem blocked
The same version 1.5 notice recorded a fix for potential attacks failing or becoming blocked during the battle. That is a historical fix note, not evidence that the encounter currently has a widespread bug. If an attack does not register, try repositioning and taking the next visible plunge opening; the available sources do not document a current, confirmed troubleshooting procedure.
