Prepare your party at the lakeshore before you agree to help Halsin, then use the visible turn counter to judge how long you need to hold out: BG3 references disagree on whether the defense lasts four or five turns.
Where the portal defense happens
The fight is part of Lift the Shadow Curse in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. After learning where Thaniel is, Halsin asks for help at the lakeshore north of Last Light Inn. The preceding quest steps involve recovering the Battered Lute from the House of Healing, playing it for Art Cullagh, and speaking with Halsin.
The lakeshore is your staging area. Before starting the encounter, restore spell slots and other limited resources, take a long rest if your party needs one, and place characters or summons where they can respond quickly. Long-duration buffs can also help if they suit your party, but they are optional.
What you need to protect—and for how long
Halsin enters the Shadowfell to rescue Thaniel while your party protects the Shadow Crossing. The BG3 Wiki’s Shadow Crossing page gives the portal 71 HP on all difficulty levels and says it cannot move, act, or receive buffs; it identifies Transfuse Health as the only way to heal it. Enemies prioritize the portal.

- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
There is a source discrepancy about the objective’s duration: the Shadow Crossing page says five turns, while the Lift the Shadow Curse quest page says four. The references do not explain the difference. Follow the on-screen turn counter in your game rather than planning around a fixed number. The quest page lists three enemy waves, but that does not mean the defense lasts three turns.
If the portal is destroyed, Halsin is lost in the Shadowfell and the quest fails. If you hold it, Halsin returns with Thaniel unconscious. That completes the defense, not the full curse-lifting quest: you still need to learn that Thaniel’s spirit was split and that Oliver is his missing half.

How to set up your defenses
Make the approach costly
Place persistent damage, terrain hazards, or slowing effects along routes enemies must cross to reach the portal. The quest guide calls out the stairs as a useful defensive line. Upcast Spirit Guardians can damage lesser melee enemies as they approach and also hurt stronger shadow foes. Radiant area damage is a useful option, not a required party build.
Keep ranged attackers from firing freely
Ranged enemies can threaten the portal without first moving through your hazards, so watch for them as soon as they appear. Focus attacks or use disabling effects on shadow-cursed archers and other ranged threats before they get repeated shots. Do not spend every turn attacking melee enemies that are already being slowed or damaged on the approach while archers remain free to fire.

Save a response for a breach
Position at least one character so they can respond if enemies get past your control zone. Movement control and forced displacement can buy space near the portal; Thunderwave is one possible way to push a dangerous group back, depending on your party and the battlefield position. Keep enough movement or an appropriate resource available to deal with a threat that slips through.

Prioritize enemies with a clear line to attack the portal, especially ranged attackers. After that, deal with melee enemies that have crossed or can bypass your hazards. The quest page describes three waves with changing enemy groups:
Rank #4
- First wave: shadows, wraiths, shadow mastiffs, shadow-cursed Harpers, and pilgrims.
- Second wave: shadow-cursed ravens, shadow creepers, pilgrims, Harpers, and Flaming Fist.
- Third wave: shadows, wraiths, zealots, Flaming Fist, and Githyanki warriors.
Area attacks are most valuable when enemies cluster. Fireball and Turn Undead are options highlighted by Gamepressure’s portal-defense guide; use them when the grouping and your party’s resources make them worthwhile.
Choose tactics around your party
There is no single required class lineup. Decide where to spend actions by checking what your party can do, how many enemies are clustered, whether ranged foes can hit the portal, and how many turns remain.

|---|---|---|
| Radiant area damage | Protect a zone near the stairs with effects such as Spirit Guardians. | Let approaching melee enemies take damage while your party deals with threats that bypass the zone. |
| Strong ranged burst | Focus archers and other enemies attacking the portal. | Remove threats that can damage the objective without crossing your defenses. |
| Movement control or displacement | Slow, redirect, or push back enemies that approach the portal. | Use it to maintain distance or recover when a group gets through. |
| Limited area attacks | Wait for enemies to cluster before spending a high-impact resource. | Hit multiple enemies when the attack can reduce pressure on the portal. |
These approaches can be combined: area control handles the routes, while ranged attacks and a reserve response deal with enemies that remain dangerous. Clerics, warriors, paladins, radiant spells, and area damage can all be useful, but none is mandatory.
Why this defense rewards planning
Larian describes combat in Baldur’s Gate 3 as combining team-based initiative, advantage and disadvantage, roll modifiers, advanced AI, environmental interactions, and fluidity that rewards strategy and foresight. In this encounter, that means using your opening setup to shape enemy movement instead of waiting until the portal is under pressure to react.
