Windows 10 does not have one universal cache folder. The correct cleanup depends on the symptom: use Settings > System > Storage for general temporary files, clear Cached images and files in Microsoft Edge for page-display problems, run ipconfig /flushdns for name-resolution failures, run wsreset.exe for Microsoft Store issues, and rebuild the Windows Update cache when update files are corrupted. These procedures target different data, so deleting the wrong category can sign you out of websites or remove rollback files.

This guide explains what each cache does, which Windows 10 account permissions are needed, how to clean it safely, and how to recover if a reset does not solve the original problem.

Which Windows 10 cache should you delete?

Start with the symptom rather than deleting folders at random. The table below maps the common problem to the narrowest cleanup that addresses it.

Symptom Use this method Scope Data risk Privilege
Low disk space or accumulated temporary files Settings > System > Storage, Storage Sense, or Disk Cleanup System and temporary-file categories Review categories; Previous Windows Installation(s) removes rollback ability Usually standard user access; administrator approval may be requested for system files
Web pages display old, broken, or missing images in Edge Edge > Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data Microsoft Edge only Cached files are separate from passwords and autofill; cookies can sign you out Standard user access
A website or app cannot resolve a name, or DNS records appear stale Elevated Command Prompt with ipconfig /flushdns Windows DNS resolver cache Does not delete browser history or saved credentials Administrator rights
Microsoft Store hangs, will not open, or shows stale content Run wsreset.exe Microsoft Store cache Designed as a cache reset; it does not replace app repair or account troubleshooting Standard user access in most installations
Windows Update repeatedly reports errors after downloads Stop Windows Update, clear C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, then start the service Windows Update download and metadata cache Downloaded update data is removed and may need to download again Administrator rights

Do not treat a DNS reset, browser cleanup, Store reset, and Windows Update reset as interchangeable. Each one clears a different cache and fixes a different class of failure.

How do you clear temporary and system files in Windows 10?

Use Storage settings when the goal is to reclaim space or remove ordinary temporary files. It gives you a category-by-category review before anything is deleted.

Remove selected temporary-file categories

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Select Temporary files. On some Windows 10 builds the same area is labelled Cleanup recommendations.
  3. Wait for the category scan to finish, then review every checkbox. Categories can include temporary files, delivery-optimization data, thumbnails, recycle-bin content, and older Windows installation files, depending on the PC.
  4. Select Remove files or Clean up. Leave any category unchecked if you need its contents.

Storage Sense works on the system drive only—the drive containing Windows, normally C:. It does not automatically clean another internal drive. Downloads and cloud-synchronized content are not touched unless you explicitly configure those locations in Storage Sense.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automate routine cleanup with Storage Sense

  1. Return to Settings > System > Storage and turn on Storage Sense.
  2. Open its configuration page and choose when Windows should run it.
  3. Set whether temporary files, the Recycle Bin, Downloads, or locally available cloud files may be removed. Keep Downloads and cloud options disabled unless you understand the retention setting.

Storage Sense is maintenance for the system drive, not a universal disk scrubber. Check its schedule and retention choices if files disappear sooner than expected.

Use Disk Cleanup when Storage settings are unavailable

  1. Search Start for Disk Cleanup and open it.
  2. Choose the Windows drive, normally C:, and select OK.
  3. Review the listed categories and select Clean up system files if you need the additional system-file list. Windows will scan the drive again.
  4. Select only the categories you intend to remove, then confirm the cleanup.

Take special care with Previous Windows Installation(s). Selecting it removes the Windows.old folder, so returning to the previous Windows version is no longer possible.

How do you clear the Microsoft Edge cache without deleting passwords?

Edge lets you remove cached page copies while leaving saved passwords and form-fill data alone. The checkboxes are independent, so select only what the troubleshooting step requires.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and select Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
  2. Open Privacy, search, and services.
  3. Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear.
  4. Choose a Time range. Use a narrow range first if the problem affects only a recent session; use All time when older cached copies may be involved.
  5. Check Cached images and files, then select Clear now.

Leave Cookies and other site data, Passwords, Autofill form data, and Browsing history unchecked unless you deliberately want those items removed. Clearing cookies can sign you out of sites; clearing passwords removes saved credentials from Edge rather than merely refreshing a page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Edge sync is enabled, inspect which categories are synchronized across devices before clearing them. A synchronized category may be removed on other signed-in devices as well. Microsoft describes cached images and files as copies of pages, images, and other media stored on the device; deleting those copies may make the next visit download the content again.

How do you flush the DNS cache in Windows 10?

Flush DNS when Windows or an application is using an outdated name-to-address result. This is a resolver-cache operation, not a browser-history deletion.

  2. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.
  4. Wait for the confirmation that the DNS resolver cache was flushed, then retry the website or application.

If the symptom is broader than stale name resolution—such as a damaged network stack—Microsoft also documents netsh winsock reset, netsh int ip reset, ipconfig /release, and ipconfig /renew. Use those commands only when the network problem calls for a reset; they alter network configuration and are not necessary for ordinary cache cleanup. Restart Windows after a network-stack reset if the command advises it.

How do you reset the Microsoft Store cache?

The built-in wsreset.exe utility resets Store cache data without requiring you to hunt for a hidden folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type wsreset.exe and select OK.
  3. A blank Command Prompt window appears. Do not close it while the reset is running.
  4. When the window closes, Microsoft Store should open automatically. Try the original download or launch operation again.

If the Store still fails, the cause may be an account, app-package, Windows service, or connection problem rather than cached data. In that case, record the exact Store error before attempting more invasive repairs.

How do you clear the Windows Update cache?

Windows Update must be stopped before its cache directory is emptied. Corrupt files in that cache can cause update errors; deleting the contents while the service is active can fail or leave files locked.

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
  3. Right-click it and select Stop. Keep the Services window open.
  4. Open File Explorer and go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  5. Delete the files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete unrelated folders elsewhere in C:Windows.
  6. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
  7. Run Windows Update again from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

The next update check may take longer because Windows has to rebuild download and metadata files. If Windows refuses to delete an item, confirm that Windows Update is stopped and that no update-related process is still using the file; do not force-delete unrelated system files.

What if Windows Update says there is not enough space?

Free space is separate from cache deletion. Microsoft documents using an external storage device with at least 10 GB free as an optional update-space workaround. Connect it when Windows requests additional space and follow the on-screen update instructions; an external drive is not required for the SoftwareDistribution cleanup itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you check before deleting any Windows 10 cache?

  • Identify the symptom. A full drive, broken Edge page, DNS failure, Store error, and update failure require different procedures.
  • Read every checkbox. Temporary-file screens can include Recycle Bin content or previous installations, not just disposable cache copies.
  • Protect sign-ins. In Edge, cookies are separate from cached images and files. Leave cookies and passwords unchecked when the goal is only to refresh page resources.
  • Check synchronization. Edge sync can propagate selected data removal to other signed-in devices.
  • Keep rollback files when needed. Removing Windows.old through Previous Windows Installation(s) permanently ends the ability to roll back to the earlier Windows version.
  • Use elevation only where required. DNS and Windows Update procedures need an administrator account; ordinary browser and Storage cleanup generally do not.
  • Allow rebuilding time. After a Store or Windows Update reset, the first launch or update check may recreate files and take longer than usual.

What should you do if clearing the cache did not fix the problem?

First, undo the assumption that every failure is cache-related. Reproduce the original symptom and note its exact wording, the affected app or website, and whether other sites or applications work.

Storage cleanup did not free enough space

Return to the category list and check which items actually consumed space. Storage Sense only manages the system drive, so a different drive may require its own cleanup method. Do not select Previous Windows Installation(s) solely to gain space if you may need rollback.

Edge still shows a broken page

Confirm that only the intended profile was cleared, then test the page in an InPrivate window. If the page works there, an extension, cookie, or profile setting—not the cached files—may be responsible. Re-enable extensions one at a time rather than deleting passwords.

DNS flushing changes nothing

Test another website and another device on the same network. If multiple devices fail, the router, internet connection, or DNS provider may be the cause; a local resolver flush cannot repair an upstream outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Update still fails

Verify that the Windows Update service was restarted and that the system drive has adequate free space. If the same error returns, preserve the error code and update history before trying additional servicing repairs; repeatedly deleting the cache without the code can hide the underlying cause.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review certain settings and vulnerabilities, and provide tools such as real-time boost and crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription, complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will deleting the Windows 10 cache delete my personal files?

It depends on the category you select. Cached page copies, DNS records, Store cache data, and Windows Update downloads are different from documents and photos, but Storage and Disk Cleanup can also offer Recycle Bin, Downloads, or previous-installation categories that require deliberate review.

How often should I run Storage Sense?

There is no universal schedule. Choose a frequency that matches how quickly the system drive fills, then set retention rules for the Recycle Bin, Downloads, and cloud files so automatic cleanup does not remove items you still need.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Can I restore files after clearing Windows Update cache?

The cache contents are downloaded again when Windows checks for updates. Clearing the cache does not provide a rollback point for an installed update; rollback depends on keeping the previous Windows installation and applicable recovery options.

Why does the first launch take longer after a cache reset?

Applications rebuild files that were intentionally removed. Edge may download page resources again, Microsoft Store may recreate its local data, and Windows Update may redownload packages, so a short delay is expected on the first attempt.
