You cannot delete YouTube’s recommendation system itself, but you can remove individual suggestions, suppress an entire channel, reduce Shorts, or reset the activity signals that shape your Home and Watch Next feeds. On a computer, select More beside a recommendation and choose Not interested. For a channel, choose Don’t recommend channel. If you want to remove Home recommendations broadly, YouTube’s documented method is to delete and turn off your watch history. Each option has a different scope and side effect, so use the smallest control that solves your problem.
Which YouTube control should I use?
The right setting depends on whether one video, one creator, Shorts, or your entire personalized feed is the problem. Use this table before changing your history, because deleting history can reduce useful personalization as well as unwanted recommendations.

How do I remove one recommended video?
Use Not interested when a single video is irrelevant, repetitive, already watched, or simply not something you want to see. This is feedback to the recommender, not a deletion of the video from YouTube.
On a computer
- Open YouTube Home or the Watch Next page while signed in.
- Move to the unwanted recommendation and click More beside its title.
- Select Not interested. The item should disappear from that feed.
- Choose Tell us why if YouTube offers it, then select I’ve already watched the video or I don’t like the video when either explanation fits.
Selecting a reason gives YouTube a more specific signal than simply dismissing the card. It can influence later suggestions, but it does not guarantee that every video on the same subject will vanish.

In the YouTube mobile app
- Open Home or Watch Next and find the recommendation.
- Tap the video’s More menu.
- Tap Not interested, then use Tell us why if you want to identify the reason.
Mobile labels and icon placement can vary slightly by app version. If you do not see the option, make sure you are acting on a recommendation card rather than an advertisement or a result in search.
On a smart TV, streaming device, or game console
- Highlight the recommendation with your remote or controller.
- Press and hold the remote’s Select button.
- Choose Not interested.
- Open Tell us why if available and submit the most accurate reason.
Remote interfaces differ by television, streaming device, and console. The control is attached to the highlighted recommendation, so do not open the video first and look for a player setting; use the card’s context menu.

How do I stop a YouTube channel from being recommended?
Choose Don’t recommend channel when the unwanted suggestions consistently come from one creator. This is broader than Not interested: it targets the channel rather than one video.
- On Home or Watch Next, open More beside a video, Short, or post from the channel.
- Select Don’t recommend channel.
- If YouTube presents Don’t recommend posts from channel, choose that option too when posts are the problem.
The suppression applies to recommendations. It does not delete the channel, cancel a subscription, remove videos from search, or prevent you from opening a direct link. If you later decide you want those recommendations back, clear the related feedback through Google My Activity rather than repeatedly searching for the channel.
How do I stop YouTube Shorts from being recommended?
The YouTube app has a dedicated control for reducing Shorts shelves. It is useful when the format itself is unwanted, rather than when one particular Short is the issue.
- Open the YouTube app and go to Home.
- Scroll until you see a Shorts shelf.
- Tap More on that shelf.
- Choose Show fewer Shorts.
This reduces Shorts recommendations on the surfaces where the setting is applied; it is not a universal block on every Short. Shorts can still appear in search, on a channel page, or through a direct link.

How can I undo “Show fewer Shorts”?
- Open Google My Activity.
- Go to Other activity.
- Find the Show fewer Shorts entry.
- Delete that entry to remove the preference.
My Activity controls are account-level, so use the Google account that is signed in to YouTube. If several accounts are used on the same device, check the profile before changing anything.
How do I reset YouTube recommendations by removing activity?
When an old viewing session, search, or accidental click keeps producing an unwanted topic, remove the underlying activity instead of dismissing cards one at a time. YouTube lets you delete individual watched videos and searches, delete all watch and search history, or pause either history.
Delete individual watched videos
- Open YouTube and go to your History page.
- Find the video that represents the unwanted topic or accidental viewing.
- Use the item’s remove control to delete it from watch history.
Removing a single video is the least disruptive reset. It leaves the rest of your history available for personalization while removing one strong signal.
Delete individual searches
- Open YouTube search and your search-history controls, or open the activity controls for the signed-in Google account.
- Locate the search that is causing unwanted suggestions.
- Delete that search entry.
Search history can reinforce a topic even when you did not watch many videos about it. Remove both a related search and a related watch when both contributed to the pattern.
Delete all watch or search history
YouTube provides controls to clear all watch history and all search history. Use the separate control for the history type you want to erase; clearing one does not automatically mean the other is cleared. This is a much larger change than dismissing a recommendation, so review the confirmation carefully before accepting it.
Pause watch or search history
Pause history when you need a temporary clean session. YouTube specifically describes pausing history while researching a subject that you are not personally interested in; resume it afterward if you want normal history-based personalization. While paused, new activity in that history does not provide the same signal for recommendations that depend on it.

Turn off watch history to remove Home recommendations
YouTube’s Help guidance states: “If you don’t want video recommendations on Home, you can delete and turn off your watch history.” This is the broadest documented way to remove Home recommendations, but it also removes the convenience of a personalized watch-history signal. Turning history off is different from merely deleting a few entries: it prevents future watches from rebuilding that signal until you enable it again.
How do I clear every “Not interested” or channel decision?
If earlier feedback is now too aggressive, clear the stored feedback rather than trying to repair each recommendation individually.

- Open YouTube “Not interested” feedback.

This removes prior Not interested and Don’t recommend channel decisions recorded in that activity category. It does not restore deleted watch history, deleted searches, or a previous feed snapshot.
Why do unwanted recommendations keep coming back?
YouTube recommendations are generated from multiple signals, so one dismissal cannot override every other input. YouTube’s official explainer lists watch history, search history, subscriptions, location, language, time of day, and video performance or satisfaction signals. YouTube engineering commentary also describes clicks, watch time, surveys, shares, likes, and dislikes as recommendation signals.
Other activity can outweigh one dismissal
If you continue watching a topic, searching for it, liking it, or subscribing to related channels, those actions can continue to support similar recommendations. Remove the relevant history and avoid interacting with the topic if you want the signal to weaken naturally.
Account and device context matters
Recommendations can reflect Google Account activity, not only the actions visible on one device. Check the active account before changing settings, especially on shared televisions or browsers. Computer, mobile, television, streaming-device, and console menus also differ slightly.

Recommendation behavior is dynamic
YouTube does not promise that a related video will disappear forever after one action. The system continually evaluates new activity and satisfaction signals, so a suppressed topic can reappear if later behavior supports it.
What is the difference between deleting history and using “Not interested”?
Not interested is targeted feedback for a recommendation. Deleting or pausing history changes the pool of activity available to personalization, which can affect many topics at once.

Can I use Incognito for a temporary clean YouTube session?
Yes. YouTube’s official explainer lists Incognito browsing as a way to search and watch without those actions affecting recommendations through your normal search and watch history. It is useful for one-off research, gifts, children’s topics, or any subject you do not want associated with your regular profile.
Incognito is a temporary separation, not a permanent reset. When you return to your normal signed-in session, its existing history and other account signals still apply.

What does YouTube’s recommendation-safety work have to do with my feed?
YouTube reported a 70% drop in watch time on non-subscribed, recommended borderline content in the United States in 2019, with the change rolled out to every market by March 2021. Its stated goal was to keep views of that category below 0.5% of total views. Those figures describe platform-wide safety-oriented demotion work, not the success rate of your personal Not interested actions.
Your controls still operate at the account level: they provide feedback or change the activity signals used for personalization. They do not alter YouTube’s broader ranking and safety systems.

What should I check if the controls are missing?
- Confirm you are signed in. Some controls are available only when an account is signed in.
- Use the recommendation card menu. The More menu for a Home or Watch Next card is different from the menu inside the video player.
- Check the active account. On shared devices, the wrong profile can make a setting appear ineffective.
- Try the device-specific method. Television and console interfaces use a press-and-hold Select action, while computers and phones expose More directly.
- Allow for feed refresh. A change may remove a card from one shelf without instantly rebuilding every other shelf.

How can I keep my watch history but prevent one research topic from shaping my feed?

Does clearing YouTube history erase downloaded videos or subscriptions?
