To delete one game’s saved data on an Xbox Series X|S, open My games & apps, select the game, choose Manage game and add-ons (or the dashboard’s equivalent Saved data view), and select the save. Choose Delete from console to remove only the local copy, or Delete everywhere to remove the save from the console, Xbox cloud storage, and other consoles using it. The first option is the safe choice for troubleshooting; the second is a permanent reset for that saved data.
The exact labels can vary after dashboard updates. The procedures below cover the current retail path, Microsoft’s documented alternative, the broad local-save cleanup command, and the Xbox Insider storage-management screen reported on August 19, 2026.

How do I delete saved game data for one game?
Use the game’s Saved data page when you want to remove a particular profile’s save rather than clean the entire console. Keep the console online if you want Xbox to verify that your latest progress has synchronized before you remove anything.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
- Choose My games & apps, then See all, and open Games.
- Highlight the game whose save you want to remove. Press the controller’s Menu button (the button with three lines) and select Manage game and add-ons.
- Open Saved data.
- Select the save belonging to the relevant Xbox profile. If the interface presents Delete all, use it only when you intend to remove every save shown for that game.
- Choose the deletion scope and confirm the warning. The two scopes have very different consequences, explained below.
Microsoft Learn documents a slightly different route: press the controller’s Home button, select My games & apps > See all, hover over the game, press the View button, and select Saved data. If your dashboard uses the View-button route instead of Manage game and add-ons, it is the same per-game save-management screen.

Which deletion option should I choose?
Choose based on whether you want Xbox cloud progress to survive. The wording is important: one choice is local cleanup, while the other removes the synchronized copy as well.
| Choice | Local copy | Cloud copy | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete from console | Removed from this console | Kept in Xbox cloud storage and available to download again | Freeing local save space, refreshing a corrupted local copy, or troubleshooting without discarding progress |
| Delete everywhere | Removed | Removed from cloud storage and other consoles using that save | Deliberately resetting the game’s saved progress on every Xbox that synchronizes it |
Microsoft’s documented behavior is that deleting through the console UI does not remove the cloud copy. When the title is launched again, Xbox can synchronize the cloud data back to the console. A Microsoft Community answer from Independent Advisor Ronnieee uses the same distinction: Delete from console removes the local copy and lets the game retrieve it from the cloud next time; Delete everywhere removes the data from the console, cloud, and other consoles.
Use Delete from console when you are fixing a local problem
If a game crashes while loading, shows an old local state, or reports a damaged save, start with the local-only option. It gives the console a chance to build a clean local copy while preserving the synchronized progress. Launch the game after deletion and allow the synchronization process to finish before playing or shutting down.
Use Delete everywhere only for an intentional reset
Select this option when you have decided that the existing progress must be gone from every synchronized location. It is not a stronger version of local troubleshooting; it is a destructive reset. Review the profile and game carefully before confirming because deleting the cloud copy also affects another Xbox that uses the same save.
How do I start a game over without losing the cloud save?
There is no separate “fresh start but keep the old cloud slot” scope in the standard deletion dialog. Delete from console preserves the cloud copy, so launching the game will normally bring that saved progress back. If you want a genuinely empty save and do not need the existing progress, the standard reset is Delete everywhere.

Before choosing the permanent option, check whether the game itself offers multiple save slots, a new-profile option, or an in-game reset. Those controls can create a new playthrough without erasing the Xbox-synchronized record. Their names and behavior are controlled by the individual game, so consult that game’s support documentation when available.

For a one-time clean test, the safer sequence is to verify synchronization, choose Delete from console, start the game, and observe whether the issue disappears. Do not interpret the reappearance of your old progress as a failed deletion: it is the expected result when the cloud copy is still present.
How do I clear a corrupted local save safely?
Remove only the local copy first. This addresses corruption that exists on the console without intentionally destroying the backup held by Xbox network storage.
Check synchronization before clearing anything
- Connect the console to the network and launch the game long enough for its latest progress to finish syncing.
- Confirm that the time or milestone you care about is visible in the game, if the title provides an in-game indicator.
- Do not clear local saves while the console is offline if you have not independently confirmed that the wanted progress already reached Xbox cloud storage.
- If the game uses unusual profile, settings, or logbook records, read its support instructions before touching cloud data.
Refresh the local copy
- Open the per-game Saved data screen using the steps above.
- Select the affected profile’s save.
- Choose Delete from console, not Delete everywhere.
- Start the game while connected to the network and wait for synchronization to complete.
- Test the loading screen or activity that previously failed. If the problem returns, close the game and seek the title’s support procedure rather than repeatedly deleting saves.
This process cannot repair a cloud save that is itself damaged. It only replaces the console’s copy with the version Xbox has stored. If the synchronized version is the damaged one, deleting locally may simply download the same problem again.
How do I clear local saves for many games?
Xbox provides a broad command for removing local saved-game copies rather than selecting titles individually. Bethesda Support documents the path as Settings > System > Storage devices > Clear local saved games.

- Open Settings from the Xbox guide or Home screen.
- Go to System, then Storage devices.
- Select Clear local saved games and read the confirmation message.
- Proceed only after you are satisfied that wanted progress has synchronized to Xbox network storage.
- Restart or launch the affected games while online so their cloud copies can resynchronize.
This command is a console-wide local cleanup, not a cloud wipe. It is useful when several games have stale local files or when you are preparing a system for troubleshooting, but it is unnecessarily broad if only one title is misbehaving. Any progress that existed only on the console and had not synchronized is at risk.
What is the Xbox Insider storage-management screen?
On August 19, 2026, Xbox Wire reported that Xbox Insiders could use Settings > System > Storage > Manage local game saves to view, sort, and delete local saves. The feature is an Insider rollout, so the menu may not appear on a retail Xbox Series X|S or on every dashboard build.
Xbox Wire says the latest saves remain backed up to the Xbox network and resynchronize when a game launches. Even with that safeguard, check that synchronization has completed before deleting local data. The Insider screen changes how local saves are browsed and selected; it does not change the meaning of the per-game Delete from console and Delete everywhere choices.
Why does a save come back after I delete it?
A save returning after Delete from console is normally cloud resynchronization, not an unsuccessful deletion. The local file was removed, but Xbox retained the cloud copy and restored it when the game started.

If your goal is to keep the local copy gone while retaining progress, that behavior is desirable: it confirms that the cloud backup is available. If your goal is to erase the progress everywhere, return to the game’s Saved data page and use Delete everywhere only after checking the profile and title; that action removes the synchronized copy from other consoles as well.

What happens when a game has more than one profile or save?
The Saved data page lists saves by Xbox profile. Select the profile whose data you are managing, rather than assuming the first entry belongs to the account currently holding the controller.
Some dashboards also offer Delete all at this screen. Treat that as a broad action for the saves displayed for the game. If more than one person uses the console, inspect the profile names before confirming so another player’s progress is not removed accidentally.
Are there game-specific records beyond the normal save?
Yes. A title may store additional records alongside ordinary progression. Microsoft Flight Simulator Support warns that deleting its cloud save can permanently erase the logbook, custom control profiles, and settings. Achievements that were already unlocked remain unlocked, but that does not restore the deleted logbook or preferences.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can an external drive solve a save-data problem?
An external drive can address broader console-capacity pressure, but it does not alter save-deletion scopes and does not guarantee preservation of a game’s title-specific progress. The Seagate Game Drive for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S is one optional accessory mentioned for storage expansion; verify the current model’s Xbox compatibility before buying. Moving or storing game installations is a separate decision from deleting saved data.

What should I do if the menu or synchronization behaves unexpectedly?
- The labels do not match: Try both documented routes. The dashboard may expose Manage game and add-ons from the Menu button or open Saved data directly from the View-button path. Updates and Insider rollouts can change wording.
- The game still loads the old progress: If you selected Delete from console, this is expected when the cloud copy resynchronizes. Use the permanent option only if erasing that cloud record is intentional.
- You cannot find the Insider storage page: It may not be included in your retail dashboard build. Use the standard per-game screen or the documented Clear local saved games command instead.
- Progress is missing after a broad cleanup: Stop playing the title and verify whether the console was online and synchronized before the cleanup. Unsynchronized local-only progress may not exist in Xbox cloud storage.
- Another console shows different progress: Do not choose Delete everywhere while investigating. That scope removes the shared cloud record and affects every console using it.
What is the safest decision in common situations?
| Situation | Recommended action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A single game crashes while loading | Delete from console for that profile | Refreshes the local copy while keeping synchronized progress |
| You want to free local save space for one title | Delete from console | Removes only the local file |
| You want a permanent fresh start everywhere | Delete everywhere | Removes local, cloud, and other-console copies |
| Several games have stale local data | Clear local saved games after confirming synchronization | Performs broad local cleanup |
| You need to inspect and sort local saves and are an Xbox Insider | Use Manage local game saves if present | The Insider feature provides a dedicated local-save management view |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete a save for only one Xbox account on a shared console?
Yes. On the game’s Saved data screen, select the entry for the specific Xbox profile before choosing a deletion scope. Review the profile name carefully when multiple people use the console.
Can a deleted-everywhere save be restored from Xbox cloud storage?
No cloud copy remains after Delete everywhere, so Xbox cannot resynchronize that saved data to another console. Treat the confirmation as final and check for any in-game backup or alternate save slot first.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Will deleting saved data uninstall the game?
The saved-data controls affect progress and related local save records, not the game installation itself. The game remains listed in My games & apps unless you separately uninstall it.
Why is the Manage local game saves option missing on my Xbox?
Xbox Wire described that screen as an Xbox Insider feature on August 19, 2026. It may therefore be absent from a retail console or from a dashboard build that has not received the rollout.
