A reliable custom faceplate starts with the exact guitar-controller revision, not with a generic Guitar Hero STL. Measure or scan the original shell, preserve every mating feature, split the model to suit your printer, and print the cosmetic side face down in PETG when the plate has working snap clips. The documented Wii Les Paul design is explicitly not intended for other Guitar Hero controllers, and even that design requires slicer compensation and a test fit. Plan on an iterative fit check rather than assuming an STL will fit perfectly out of the box.
Which guitar-controller revision should the faceplate fit?
Identify the platform and shell revision before opening CAD software. Wii Les Paul, PS3/Xbox 360 Les Paul, World Tour, Kramer and other controller families have different button layouts, openings and attachment features. A faceplate that looks similar can still place the fret openings or strum clearance incorrectly.

SoftWright’s 2023 Wii Les Paul listing warns that its design “SHOULD NOT work for any Guitar Hero Controllers besides the Wii version as the buttons and their placements are different.” The Clone Hero Wiki also separates replacement parts by controller family. Treat each family as a separate fit target unless you have measured both shells and verified that every interface matches.
Make a fit-target checklist
- Record the console/controller family and any model or revision marking.
- Keep the original faceplate available for measurement and final comparison.
- Photograph the inside before removing it so you can identify clips, ribs, bosses and screw locations.
- Do not infer compatibility from the name “Les Paul”; Wii and PS3/Xbox 360 versions are not automatically interchangeable.
How do you capture the shell geometry?
Use the original faceplate as the dimensional reference. The outside artwork can change, but the mating surfaces should remain faithful to the shell. Measure with calipers where possible; a flatbed scan or photogrammetry model can help establish the outline, but critical holes and clip locations still need physical verification.

Measure the interfaces that control fit
- Perimeter: Trace the complete edge, including changes in height and any locating lips.
- Fasteners: Mark every screw, clip, block and standoff position. Measure hole diameter, depth and the direction in which the original part is installed.
- Controls: Map fret-button openings, the strum-bar opening and clearance around moving parts. Check travel with the faceplate installed, not just with the shell open.
- Interior geometry: Capture ribs, bosses and any surfaces that could touch a PCB, wiring or the neck assembly.
- Cosmetic skin: Apply new curves, logos or textures only outside the retained mating envelope.
There is no universal Guitar Hero faceplate dimensional standard. Model-specific STL files are useful starting points, but they do not replace checking your own shell.
Should you print one piece or split the faceplate?
Choose the split before detailed modeling. A full faceplate may exceed a desktop printer’s X/Y travel, while a two-piece design can fit with a controlled seam and alignment features. SoftWright supplies both full and two-piece Wii Les Paul files and recommends the two-piece option unless the printer is exceptionally large. A separate MakerWorld mirror likewise notes that its file must be cut in two for a Bambu Lab A1.

|---|---|---|
| Full plate | Your bed accommodates the complete envelope and you can orient the plate for a clean face. | Fewer seams and no joining step, but greater bed-size and warping demands. |
| Two-piece plate | A normal desktop printer cannot contain the full outline, or you want shorter print dimensions. | Requires a seam, alignment strategy and a joint that must not interfere with the shell. |
Reference dimensions and bed planning
SoftWright reports a full Wii Les Paul STL envelope of 236.5 × 20.5 × 315.719 mm; the two-piece files are smaller. A current Les Paul listing reports a 3MF envelope of 240.354 × 319.140 × 19.000 mm. Those are file envelopes, not guarantees that your printer can use every millimeter of its nominal bed. Leave clearance for skirts, brim and the printer’s unprintable margins.
For scale, an Adafruit printed-guitar project lists a minimum build area of approximately 250 × 148 × 50 mm. That 2013 project page, updated in 2024, concerns a comparable four-piece MIDI-controller enclosure rather than a universal faceplate requirement. Use it as a planning reference only.

How to split an STL cleanly
- Import the STL into your CAD or mesh editor and orient it as it will sit on the bed.
- Place the cut along a visually unobtrusive, structurally supported seam; avoid fret openings, clip roots and thin decorative edges.
- Check both halves against the original shell before adding alignment pins or sockets.
- Add shallow alignment features only where there is interior volume and no conflict with ribs or electronics.
- Export each half, recheck scale in the slicer and perform a dry assembly before committing to the final material.
Which filament is best for a functional replacement?
PETG has the strongest support in the supplied faceplate evidence for a working replacement because it better tolerates the repeated loading of clips. The current Les Paul listing recommends PETG for resistance and cautions that PLA can produce break points. PLA remains useful for a prototype when clip loads are low or when you are validating appearance and dimensions.
| Material | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PETG | Final plate with snap clips or frequently removed shell. | Needs a tuned profile; stringing and overhang behavior can affect clip detail. |
| PLA | Low-load prototype, color proof or a plate retained by internal screws. | The cited listing reports greater break-point risk at clips. |
Material alone does not establish lifetime. Durability depends on orientation, layer adhesion, clip geometry, dimensional compensation and how often the plate is removed. No controlled life-cycle test is reported for these faceplates.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow should you model the custom exterior?
Start by making a protected “fit envelope” from the original part. Lock the perimeter, underside ledges, openings and attachment points. Build your visual design as a separate exterior body that cannot intrude into that envelope.
Modeling sequence
- Create a reference sketch from the original perimeter and mark the centerlines for the neck and strum area.
- Rebuild the underside contact surfaces and all openings at their measured positions.
- Verify wall thickness around clips and screw bosses; avoid creating a knife edge where a load enters the part.
- Add the new topography, inlays, raised graphics or texture on the outward-facing skin.
- Check the mesh for non-manifold edges, inverted normals and self-intersections before export.
- Export a high-quality STL or 3MF without changing units. Reopen the file in the slicer and compare its measured envelope with the CAD model.
Keep decorative relief away from the neck, strum bar and button travel zones. A design that looks clear when the shell is empty can bind once the electronics and controls are installed.

What slicer orientation and supports should you use?
For the documented Les Paul faceplate, print the cosmetic face downward. This improves the visible finish and helps the clip geometry resist the relevant loads. Supports are needed at the snap clips or other specified overhangs, not indiscriminately across the entire decorative surface.
Project-specific starting settings
The comparable Adafruit project lists PLA at 230 °C, 20% infill and a 0.20 mm layer height. Those values belong to that project and should be treated as starting points rather than universal settings for PETG or for every printer.

- Use the material manufacturer’s temperature range and calibrate first-layer adhesion.
- Place the face on the bed so the show surface receives the finish you want.
- Enable supports only where the model requires them, especially at snap clips.
- When the file author requests it, disable automatic removal of small overhangs; removing those features can erase the clip support the model expects.
- Use a brim or other adhesion aid if the plate’s footprint or material makes edge lift likely.
How do you compensate for dimensional error?
Print a small edge or clip test before producing the full plate. SoftWright reports small outer-edge deviations and specifically says, “Horizontal expansion should be tuned on your slicer profile or these parts may not fit as they should.” Adjust the slicer’s horizontal-expansion compensation in small increments, then retest rather than changing the CAD model blindly.
A practical fit-test loop
- Print a representative clip, edge segment or a small corner containing the critical interface.
- Let the part cool completely and remove supports without forcing the clip.
- Test the segment against the original shell. Check insertion force, seating and any visible gap.
- Change horizontal expansion by a small amount in the direction indicated by the test, then repeat.
- Print the complete plate only after the test segment seats consistently.
- Install the complete plate on the empty shell first; add electronics after the perimeter and controls pass inspection.
Do not promise a guaranteed fit from the STL dimensions alone. Printer calibration, filament shrinkage, support scars and the condition of the original shell all influence the result.

How should the plate attach to the guitar?
Retain the original clip system when the measured shell and material support it. If the design calls for internal blocks, use those blocks instead of improvising external fasteners that could interfere with the player’s hands or the controls.
Documented Wii Les Paul screw-block method
The SoftWright Wii design uses six internal blocks, three per side in the two-piece version. It is screwed from inside the guitar housing with approximately 6–10 mm M3 screws; socket-head or button-head screws are preferred. Select the length that fully engages the printed block without bottoming out in the shell.
- Align each block with the shell before tightening any screw.
- Start every screw by hand to avoid cross-threading or pulling a block out of alignment.
- Tighten evenly until the plate is seated; do not crush the plastic.
- Stop if a boss flexes, the faceplate bows or a crack begins at a clip root.
Clip attachment is faster and preserves the original appearance, but it concentrates stress at small printed features. Screw blocks add hardware and assembly time, yet can reduce repeated stress on fragile clips when the design provides them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you finish and assemble the printed parts?
Remove supports carefully, then deburr every clip and perimeter edge. Do not sand the mating surfaces indiscriminately: removing a locating lip or changing a clip angle can create more play than the original print error.

Final assembly inspection
- Every fret button moves freely through its opening without rubbing.
- The strum bar reaches full travel in both directions.
- The neck seats fully and does not press against the new faceplate.
- Ribs, PCB edges, wires and switches remain unobstructed.
- The seam of a split plate is flush and does not catch on the shell.
- All clips are fully engaged or all internal screws are seated without distortion.
Close the housing only after these checks pass. If a control binds, remove material from the offending decorative or opening area in tiny increments and retest; do not force the shell closed.
What if you do not own a suitable 3D printer?
A print service or specialist builder can produce the part when your printer cannot accommodate the envelope or the material profile. Ajax Custom Guitars advertises custom 3D-printed faceplates and made-to-order controller builds. Provide the exact controller revision, the final STL or 3MF, material preference, color and whether the file is already split. Ask the service to preserve scale and to confirm how it will handle supports at the clips.
Whether you print in-house or order a part, request a fit check against the same revision of shell. A service can reproduce the file accurately, but it cannot make a Wii-specific design fit a different controller family.
Which approach should you choose?
| Your situation | Recommended approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wii Les Paul, small desktop printer | Use the revision-specific two-piece design, PETG, face down, with clip supports and a test coupon. | Matches the documented split workflow and reduces bed-size risk. |
| Large printer and a carefully measured shell | Print a full plate after verifying the complete envelope and adhesion plan. | Avoids a seam, but does not remove the need for dimensional testing. |
| Prototype or cosmetic color test | PLA with conservative clip loading and a removable test fit. | PLA is practical for validation, while the cited listing warns of clip break points. |
| Frequent plate removal | PETG with reinforced or screw-block attachment where the design allows it. | Better-supported resistance and less reliance on repeatedly flexed PLA clips. |
| No printer or insufficient bed | Use a print service or custom builder and supply exact revision data. | Outsources equipment limits while retaining the revision-specific fit requirement. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a faceplate STL downloaded for a different revision if the outline looks close?
Treat it as an unverified starting mesh, not a drop-in part. Compare fret spacing, strum clearance, perimeter lips and every attachment point against your shell; one misplaced opening is enough to make the plate unusable.
How much clearance should I leave around the electronics?
The available documentation does not establish a universal clearance number. Preserve the original interior ribs and keep the new skin outside the measured PCB, wiring and switch envelope, then verify movement with the electronics installed.
Is a split seam weaker than a one-piece faceplate?
A seam introduces another interface, but its practical strength depends on seam location, alignment and how the two halves are retained. Place it away from clip roots and control openings, and let the shell’s attachment features carry the load where possible.

What should I send to a print service for an accurate quote?
Send the controller revision, the STL or 3MF in confirmed scale, whether it is full or split, material and color, and photos of the original faceplate’s underside. Include any required M3 hardware and state that the visible face should be printed downward if the service supports that orientation.
