To destroy golden-cracked blocks in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, unlock Rose’s Smash ability by defeating The Builder (Talos) in the Clock Tower. Once Smash is available, jump directly above the yellow block or floor and press Down + Jump while Rose is airborne: Down + Cross on PlayStation or S + Space on PC. A short hop may not break a thick floor, so use a higher starting point for a stronger impact.
What do golden cracks mean?
Golden cracks mark objects that can be destroyed by Smash. They are not a signal to keep striking with the Arcane Whip or another ordinary attack. Smash is a movement ability that sends Rose vertically downward and can both damage enemies and break marked obstacles.

Some cracked walls are weapon-breakable, while golden-cracked blocks and floors are the separate Smash obstacle type described in the game’s tutorial and gameplay guides.
How do I unlock Smash?
You receive Smash after defeating The Builder, also called Talos, in the Clock Tower. Guides use both “Throne of the Builder” and “Final Trap” for the encounter’s location, so the room name can vary with the map being followed.

- Reach the Clock Tower’s Eastern Access Shaft.
- Locate the yellow block covering the floor.
- Reposition the movable platforms so the giant fist has a clear route to the obstruction.
- Let the giant fist destroy the blockage.
- Drop through the opening, ride the elevator, and enter the Builder’s throne area.
- Defeat The Builder/Talos. Smash is awarded after the fight.
The fist used to open this route is part of the Clock Tower sequence. It is not the same ability as Smash, and obtaining or using the combat spell Fist of Talos does not replace the boss reward.
How do I use Smash on a yellow block?
Stand above the target, jump, and trigger the move during the fall. Rose must be airborne when the Down and Jump inputs register.

| Platform | Smash input | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation | Down + Cross | Rose dives straight down and impacts the target. |
| PC | S + Space | Rose performs the same downward Smash. |
- Move Rose over the center of the golden-cracked block or floor.
- Press Jump and make sure she has left the ground.
- While she is still in the air, press Down and Jump together (Cross on PlayStation, Space on PC).
- Allow the impact to finish before moving away; the block should break if it is within Smash’s effective power range.
AllThingsHow reproduces the tutorial as: “Pressing Down + Jump while Rose is in the air will now send her crashing to the ground. The impact can break destructible objects, recognisable by their golden cracks, and can also damage enemies.”
Why does Down + Jump not break the cracked floor?
The most common reason is insufficient fall distance. Smash has several impact strengths, and a brief jump produces a weaker stomp than a fall begun from higher up.

Use a higher launch point
Climb to a ledge, platform, or upper section above the target, then jump and activate Smash after Rose has travelled farther downward. The in-game Heavy Stomp tutorial explains that power levels depend on fall distance and that jumping high enough is required for thicker destructible objects.
Check the target and timing
- Confirm that the surface has golden cracks rather than a different cracked-wall texture.
- Press Down + Jump only after Rose is airborne, not while she is standing on the floor.
- Center Rose over the target; landing beside a block can make a successful input look ineffective.
- If the floor remains intact, repeat from a greater height instead of switching to the whip.
Is Smash the same as Fist of Talos?
No. Smash is Rose’s downward movement technique and the required tool for golden-cracked obstacles. Fist of Talos is a separate spell that summons a giant fist primarily for combat. The giant fist also appears in the Clock Tower unlocking sequence, which is why the two abilities are easy to confuse.

Where should I return after unlocking Smash?
Backtrack through earlier areas and inspect every golden-cracked barrier you passed before the Builder fight. Guides identify rewards behind these obstacles including extra rooms, relic and weapon chests, Brave Heart and Wise Heart fragments, stat-enhancement books, shortcuts, and routes such as Brauner’s atelier.
Earlier locations specifically mentioned by guides include the Paris Streets and the cemetery. One 2026 guide catalogues 257 Secret Areas in total, including six Smash floors—five thick floors and one golden-crack floor. That count belongs to that guide’s area list and should not be treated as an in-game counter that appears in every map or edition.

What if my map uses different room names?
Follow the sequence rather than relying on one label: Eastern Access Shaft, the yellow floor opened by the giant fist, the elevator below it, and the Builder/Talos boss room. Secondary guides published in October 2026 corroborate the mechanic, boss reward, controls, and height requirement, but their room naming differs. Future patches or alternate maps may label the same Clock Tower route differently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Arcane Whip break golden-cracked blocks?
No. Golden cracks identify Smash targets, and ordinary attacks do not substitute for the Smash movement ability. If a cracked surface reacts to a weapon instead, it is a different obstacle type.
Do I have to finish the Clock Tower before breaking yellow floors elsewhere?
Yes. Smash is awarded for defeating The Builder/Talos, so earlier golden-cracked barriers remain inaccessible until that boss encounter is complete. Afterward, return to previous areas to open them.
How can I tell whether a floor is too thick for my current Smash?
If a correctly timed impact leaves a golden-cracked floor intact, increase the fall distance. Start from a higher ledge or platform and trigger Smash later in the descent.
What rewards are hidden behind Smash barriers?
Depending on the location, guides report extra rooms, relic and weapon chests, heart fragments, stat-enhancement books, shortcuts, and access toward Brauner’s atelier. The reward is not identical at every barrier.
