Trump’s tariffs can affect gaming hardware through the cost of imported consoles, controllers, accessories, and components—but the available policy records do not establish one tariff rate for all gaming products or confirm a price increase for any specific console. A January 2026 duty applies to defined semiconductor products, with exceptions that include non-data-center consumer applications; a console is not automatically covered just because it contains chips.
What the tariff actions say about gaming products
The key distinction is between a tariff’s legal scope and how a particular product is classified and treated at the border. The policy timeline and the dated industry testimony provide useful context, but neither is a current customs ruling for a named console model.

| Action or record | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| December 16, 2025 USTR public-hearing testimony | An industry representative said video game consoles were paying the reciprocal tariffs announced in April 2025. The testimony also discussed consoles, controllers, and accessories, and said consoles were not then subject to the Section 301 investigation under discussion. | It is a dated account, not a determination of any product’s current tariff treatment. It does not establish a current rate for a specific model. |
| January 14, 2026 White House semiconductor proclamation | Sets a 25% ad valorem duty on the covered products it defines, for goods entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouse on or after January 15, 2026. The proclamation lists exceptions, including non-data-center consumer applications, research and development, startups, and repairs and replacements. | It does not impose a universal 25% tariff on electronics, consoles, or every semiconductor inside a gaming device. Coverage depends on the proclamation’s defined products, terms, and exceptions. |
| 2026 U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule | The USITC says Revision 20 was published September 28, 2026. | A schedule revision alone does not identify the classification or applicable duties for a particular console or accessory. |
The White House’s companion fact sheet describes the January action as concerning certain advanced computing chips and says the tariff does not apply to chips imported to support U.S. technology supply-chain buildout or domestic manufacturing capacity for semiconductor derivatives. The proclamation defines the operative coverage and exceptions.

Will tariffs make video game consoles more expensive?
They could add to the cost of imported gaming products if a tariff applies to the product or its components, but the evidence here does not confirm a tariff-driven retail price increase for any console. It also does not establish how much tariffs have raised hardware prices, affected console sales, changed studio employment, or altered game-development costs.

A tariff is a cost at import, not an automatic retail-price change of the same amount. The importer or another business in the supply chain may absorb some cost, pass some along, or respond in another way. Without a product-specific tariff determination and evidence of how businesses handled the resulting cost, a predicted surcharge for a console would be speculation.
Why a console’s treatment depends on its details
To estimate the tariff exposure of a specific product entering the United States, the relevant facts include:
Rank #2
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
- Product classification: the current HTS classification for the console, controller, accessory, or component. The fact that a device contains a semiconductor does not by itself show that the device falls within the semiconductor proclamation.
- Country of origin: where the product is considered to originate under the applicable customs rules; the brand’s home country alone does not answer this.
- Entry date: the tariff measures in force when the goods enter for consumption or are withdrawn from warehouse, including the measure’s effective date and terms.
- Applicable exclusions: whether a product or its use qualifies for an exception under the relevant action.
The USITC’s September 28, 2026 notice that 2026 HTS Revision 20 had been published is a reason to check the current schedule rather than reuse an older classification or rate. The USTR’s presidential tariff actions index can help identify later policy actions, but the controlling legal text and effective date need to be checked for any claimed current rate.

The December 16, 2025 hearing record offers a dated view of how industry representatives described console treatment at that time: consoles were paying the April reciprocal tariffs, while they were not then covered by the Section 301 investigation being discussed. It specifically names consoles, controllers, and accessories, making those the clearest gaming product categories to consider when discussing potential exposure.

The same testimony broadly claimed that member companies supported “tens of thousands” of U.S. jobs and invested “billions” in U.S. research and development. The available passage provides neither precise figures nor a named speaker, so these are industry claims, not independently verified measures of jobs or investment—and they do not show tariff-caused employment or development effects.

Import costs could matter beyond the sticker price of a console if they affect the economics of hardware, controllers, accessories, or components. But the evidence does not quantify any resulting effect on game development budgets, studio hiring, sales, or release plans. Those outcomes depend on product coverage, supply chains, company decisions, and whether costs are absorbed or passed on; they should not be presented as measured consequences of these tariff actions.

- Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T), IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, Bluetooth 5.1

- What's Included: Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition; DualSense; USB cable, HDMI cable.
For consumers, the practical answer is product-specific: the tariff rules create potential exposure, but neither the January semiconductor proclamation nor the 2025 hearing testimony establishes a current tariff surcharge for a particular gaming product. A reliable estimate requires the product’s current classification, origin, entry date, and applicable policy or exclusion.
