Steam’s normal “ad” is a promotional instant message about upcoming releases or changes to games you own. You can turn it off from Steam’s settings without uninstalling the client. Open Steam > Settings (called Preferences on macOS), find the control for promotional instant messages or Steam news notifications, switch it off, and restart Steam. If Steam itself opens whenever your computer starts, use the separate startup control or Steam’s -silent launch option. Banners, redirects, or random advertising pages are not normal Steam promotions and may indicate adware or other malware.
What is the Steam pop-up, and is it really an advertisement?
Steam Support describes its normal promotional popup as an instant message showing upcoming or new releases, or changes to games you own. It is generated by the Steam client, rather than being a web page injected into every application. Steam treats this message as advertising, but it is separate from game updates, your library, and the store itself.
The exact wording of the setting has changed between client interfaces and may also vary by operating system or language. Steam’s support guidance identifies the setting by function rather than promising one permanent label, so look for wording related to promotional instant messages, Steam news, or notifications about games you own.

How do I stop Steam’s promotional popup when I launch the client?
Disable the promotional-message control in Steam Settings, then restart the client to test the change. The process takes only a minute and does not remove games, disable updates, or require Steam to run offline.
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Choose Steam > Settings. On macOS, choose Steam > Preferences.
- Browse the settings pages for the control that allows promotional instant messages, Steam news, or similar notifications about releases and changes to games you own.
- Turn that control off. Because the visible label is not fixed in Steam’s support article, confirm that the description refers to the promotional message rather than general account, chat, or game-update notifications.
- Close Steam completely and launch it again. A restart confirms that the client has loaded the new notification preference.
If the message disappears after the restart, no additional shortcut, registry change, or third-party blocker is needed. If it returns, work through the checks below instead of disabling unrelated Steam services.

What if Steam opens a window every time my computer starts?
A startup window is a different problem from a promotional message that appears after Steam opens. Steam has a dedicated setting for automatic startup, and changing it controls whether the client launches with the operating system—not whether promotional messages are enabled once Steam is already running.
- Open Steam > Settings (or Steam > Preferences on macOS).
- Select Interface.
- Clear Run Steam when my computer starts.
- Restart the computer and verify that Steam no longer launches automatically.
This leaves Steam available to start normally when you choose it. It does not change the promotional-message preference, so disable that separately if you also see an instant message after manually opening Steam.
How can I keep Steam running without opening a normal window?
Steam documents a -silent launch option. Used through a Steam shortcut, it starts the client in the system tray; normal Steam windows appear only after you select the tray icon. This is useful when you want background functions such as downloads or cloud synchronization without a full Steam window appearing at login.
Using the documented launch option
- Create or edit the shortcut you use to start Steam.
- Add
-silentto Steam’s launch command, following the shortcut-editing method provided by your operating system. - Save the shortcut and launch Steam through it.
- Check the system tray for Steam. Select the tray icon when you want the regular client window.
The option affects how Steam starts and where its interface appears. It is not a replacement for the promotional-message setting: a promotional notification can still be governed by its own preference, and the automatic-startup checkbox remains a separate control.

Which Steam control should I use?
Choose the remedy according to what you are trying to suppress. Combining controls unnecessarily can make troubleshooting harder, especially when Steam is supposed to remain available for background downloads.

| Garbage banners, external advertising sites, or random ads in Steam’s browser | Investigate spyware, adware, or other malware with a trusted security utility | The computer and its software, not a normal Steam preference | Depends on the malware and the cleanup result |
Why does the popup keep appearing after I disabled it?
Persistent messages usually mean that the wrong control was changed, Steam did not restart, or the client is using a different interface label than the one you expected. Check each possibility in order.
Confirm that the setting targets promotional messages
Steam has several notification categories. A setting for chat, friend activity, downloads, or game updates will not necessarily suppress the instant message about releases. Reopen Settings and read the description beside the switch rather than relying only on its heading.
Restart the client, not just the window
Close Steam fully, then start it again. If Steam remains active in the system tray, quitting the visible window may not have restarted the client process that holds the preference.

Check every account and installation you use
Steam preferences can appear different when you switch operating-system profiles, client installations, or accounts. Make the change in the same Steam installation and account that displays the popup.
Allow for client-interface changes
Steam’s support documentation does not specify one permanent label for this control. A client update or localization can move the option or change its wording. Search the current Settings pages for “instant message,” “news,” “promotional,” or notifications concerning games you own.
How do I tell a normal Steam message from malware-driven advertising?
A normal Steam promotion is an in-client instant message tied to upcoming releases or changes involving games you own. External redirects, unusable banner overlays, or random advertising pages in Steam’s browser are warning signs of spyware, adware, or another form of malware rather than a Steam marketing preference.
Signs that the behavior is abnormal
- Links send you to unrelated external advertising domains.
- Large or persistent banners cover Steam pages or the desktop.
- Advertising appears in the Steam browser without a corresponding Steam message.
- Popups continue outside Steam or appear in other applications.
- The behavior began after installing an untrusted program, browser extension, or download.
What to do when those signs appear
- Do not click the advertisement or download a “cleaner” offered by the popup.
- Close the suspicious page or Steam window.
- Run a scan with a reputable security utility obtained from the provider’s trusted official source.
- Follow the utility’s quarantine or removal instructions, then restart the computer.
- Open Steam again and determine whether the external advertising has stopped.
Steam specifically advises obtaining scanning utilities only from trusted official sources. A malware scan is not necessary for the ordinary promotional instant message, and disabling Steam’s notification setting will not remove adware that is injecting unrelated advertisements.
Can I disable the popup without uninstalling Steam or going offline?
Yes. The promotional message is controlled by a Steam preference, so you can keep the client installed, remain signed in, use the store, and play online while suppressing that particular notification. Automatic startup and -silent are optional startup-behavior controls, not requirements for disabling the message.

Disabling the message also does not cancel game updates or remove release information from the Steam store. It only prevents the specified instant message from being shown by the client.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check on Windows and macOS?
The menu name differs at the top level: Windows and other desktop installations use Steam > Settings, while macOS uses Steam > Preferences. Once inside the client, the relevant option may be organized differently after an update, so use the setting’s description as the authority.
Windows-specific startup check
If Steam appears after signing in to Windows, first inspect Settings > Interface > Run Steam when my computer starts. If that box is already clear, another Windows startup entry may be launching Steam; test by starting Steam manually after disabling the promotional message, rather than assuming the popup setting controls Windows startup.
macOS-specific startup check
On macOS, begin with Steam’s own Preferences menu and the same startup behavior options exposed by the client. If Steam still opens at login after its internal startup option is disabled, inspect macOS login-item settings separately. Do not change the promotional-message preference to solve a login-item problem.

What are the common mistakes when trying to remove Steam popups?
- Changing the startup checkbox only: this stops automatic launching but does not disable a promotional message when you open Steam yourself.
- Using
-silentas an ad blocker: it changes the startup presentation and keeps Steam in the tray; it is not the notification preference. - Assuming every advertisement is from Steam: redirects and random browser banners point toward a security problem, not a normal client message.
- Downloading a fix from the popup: an ad that offers a scanner or “Steam repair” can be part of the infection. Obtain security software from its official source.
- Expecting one exact label forever: Steam can revise its interface. Follow the current description for promotional instant messages or Steam news.
- Testing without restarting: leave Steam fully, relaunch it, and then judge whether the preference worked.
When should I contact Steam Support?
Contact Steam Support when the official notification control is unavailable, cannot be saved, or has no effect after a complete restart and you have ruled out external advertising. Include your operating system, Steam client version, the visible wording of the notification, and whether Steam starts automatically or only after you open it. That information helps distinguish a changed interface from a damaged installation or account-specific problem.
If the issue involves redirects, injected banners, or advertisements outside Steam, treat it as a security incident first. Preserve the suspicious behavior description, scan with a trusted utility, and avoid entering account credentials into pages opened by the advertisement.
Quick decision checklist
- Is it an instant message about releases or changes to games you own? Disable the promotional-message control in Steam Settings and restart Steam.
- Does Steam open by itself at computer startup? Clear Run Steam when my computer starts under Interface.
- Must Steam run in the background without a normal window? Use the documented
-silentoption through the Steam shortcut. - Are there unrelated banners, redirects, or random browser ads? Scan for spyware, adware, or malware using a utility from a trusted official source.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning off Steam’s promotional message hide game-update alerts?
No. The control is aimed at the instant message about releases or changes to games you own. Other notification categories can remain enabled, so review each category if you also want to reduce download or friend alerts.
Why is the option missing from my Steam settings?
Steam can move or rename notification controls as the desktop interface changes, and localized clients may use different wording. Search the current Settings or Preferences pages for terms such as instant message, news, promotional, or notifications about owned games.

Can Steam still download games when it starts with -silent?
The documented option changes the visible startup behavior by placing Steam in the system tray. Steam remains running, so background functions can continue; select the tray icon whenever you need the full client window.
Quick Recap
Are external ad redirects caused by my Steam account?
Not necessarily. Steam identifies garbage banners, unrelated redirects, and random browser advertising as possible spyware, adware, or malware interference. Scan the computer with a security utility obtained from a trusted official source before entering credentials or downloading anything offered by the ad.
