Set the per-world DeathPenalties value to 0. In a hosting control panel, choose the Death Penalty option labeled No Loss; if your host does not expose that control, stop the server and edit that world’s SandboxSettings.ini so it contains DeathPenalties=0. Restart the server and test with the intended save. The setting is per world, and the file location differs between hosts.
What the DeathPenalties setting does
DeathPenalties controls which items are lost when a player dies on an Abiotic Factor server. A value of 0 disables item loss. It does not necessarily disable every death-related effect: in particular, the available host guidance does not establish whether a zero value also prevents durability loss.

One Steam community discussion reports 1 as the default, but that default is low-confidence and may vary by version or configuration. Check the value in your own world before changing it.
Choose the panel method or the manual method
Use the control panel when it exposes a Death Penalty dropdown. It is the quickest and least error-prone route because the panel writes the setting for you. The manual method is useful when the panel has no such control, when you need to inspect the exact value, or when you are managing a dedicated server installation yourself.

Prepare the server before changing anything
- Stop the server completely. Do not edit an active configuration. A running process can overwrite the file when it saves or shuts down.
- Identify the target world. Death penalties are described as per-world, so changing one save does not automatically change another. Record the save name shown by your host or in the server’s world directory.
- Make a backup. Download or copy the relevant save and configuration file before editing. Keep the original until you have confirmed that the new behavior works.
- Check for an existing value. If
DeathPenaltiesalready appears, change that line rather than adding a second competing entry. If you cannot find the setting, use the panel or verify that you are in the correct world-specific configuration.
These precautions matter most on servers with several worlds. A successful edit in one save can look like a failed edit if players are actually joining a different save.
Disable penalties in a hosting control panel
Panel layouts are provider-specific, but the control is generally exposed as a Death Penalty dropdown. The documented label for the zero-loss choice is No Loss.
- Stop the Abiotic Factor server from the host’s console or power page.
- Open the server’s configuration area. Look for a menu named Configuration, Game Settings, Server Settings, or a similarly named section.
- Find Death Penalty or Death Penalties.
- Select No Loss. Do not select a label that merely mentions equipped items or the hotbar; those correspond to nonzero values.
- Apply or save the setting.
- Start the server and wait until it reports that the world is online.
- Join the same world you edited and perform a controlled test. Use inexpensive items, because the panel may have written a different save or the server may still be using a cached configuration.
If the dropdown is absent, do not assume that the game lacks the setting. Switch to the file method and locate the world’s sandbox configuration instead.
Disable penalties by editing SandboxSettings.ini
The manual change is one line: DeathPenalties=0. The difficult part is locating the file that belongs to the world your server actually loads.

These paths conflict, so there is no safe universal location to paste into a file manager. Use your host’s file browser, SFTP view, or local server folder and search within the AbioticFactor directory for SandboxSettings.ini. If several copies exist, select the one under the world or server configuration that your launch process uses. A reference also describes sandbox values as being set at world creation and stored in world save data without an automatically generated file; if no file appears, your installation may follow that model.
Manual edit procedure
- Stop the server and wait for the process to exit.
- Open the file manager or connect to the server files.
- Locate the
SandboxSettings.iniassociated with the intended world. Confirm the save name or surrounding directory before editing. - Download a backup copy.
- Open the file as plain text.
- Find the existing
DeathPenaltiesentry. Replace its value with0, producing exactlyDeathPenalties=0. If the key is absent and your installation uses this file for sandbox values, add that key in the same configuration area as the other sandbox settings. - Save the file without changing its name or extension.
- Start the server and join the same world.
- Test with low-value items, then inspect the file again after a clean shutdown to ensure the value remains
0.
Do not edit a similarly named local single-player file while the dedicated server is using a different save directory. The game can accept a perfectly valid edit that has no effect simply because it belongs to another world.
Steam dedicated servers and a custom INI path
Some dedicated-server setups keep the sandbox file outside the default location. In that case, a TechRaptor guide says the run script must include the launch parameter -SandboxIniPath so the server knows where to read the custom INI.
- Stop the server.
- Open the script or startup configuration that launches the dedicated server.
- Add
-SandboxIniPathusing the path format required by your operating system and launch script. Do not guess the path; point it to the file you intend to edit. - Save the startup configuration and start the server.
- Check the startup output, if available, and then verify the loaded world with a controlled death test.
The parameter is relevant only when your installation is deliberately using a custom INI location. Adding it to a normal panel-managed server can be ineffective or can make the server read the wrong file, so follow the launch script’s existing argument format.

What “no death penalty” does and does not prove
Durability loss
Some community guidance lists DurabilityLossOnDeathMultiplier=0.1 as a related setting. That value is described as a multiplier for durability lost on death, but the evidence for its exact behavior is low-confidence. More importantly, it has not been established that DeathPenalties=0 automatically removes durability loss. If players keep their items but notice damaged equipment, inspect this separate key and test it independently rather than assuming the zero-loss setting covers it.
Death notifications
ShowDeathMessages is a separate option. It is reported as defaulting to True and controls announcements about deaths, not the inventory penalty. Turning death messages off would change chat or notification behavior while leaving item-loss rules untouched.

The documented value scale concerns item retention and destruction. It does not establish that hunger, health, respawn location, status effects, durability, or other game systems are changed. Treat those as separate mechanics unless your own version’s settings explicitly say otherwise.
Verify that the change worked
- Confirm the server was stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Confirm the player joined the same save whose configuration you changed.
- Check that the active file still contains
DeathPenalties=0after a restart. - Carry a cheap, identifiable item and a small amount of equipment for the first test.
- After dying and respawning, check the inventory, equipped slots, and hotbar separately. “No loss” should retain the items governed by this setting; it does not prove that durability or unrelated effects were changed.
- If you operate multiple worlds, repeat the check for each world that should use no loss.
Troubleshooting when items are still lost
The panel shows No Loss, but the game behaves differently
Stop the server again, save the panel setting, and inspect the files if the host permits it. A panel may write a world-specific file while you are testing another save. Verify the active world name and the panel’s selected instance before changing anything else.

The INI value keeps reverting
A running server or a host-generated configuration routine may be rewriting the file. Stop the process, restore the backup if necessary, make one edit, and start the server only after the file is saved. If the value changes after shutdown, the panel or startup system is likely authoritative; use that interface instead of fighting the generated file.

You found several SandboxSettings.ini files
Use the directory that matches the world being launched, not merely the first search result. Compare the save name and surrounding folder structure. If a custom startup argument is present, follow its -SandboxIniPath target. When uncertain, change one candidate file at a time, restart, and verify the loaded world before making additional edits.
No SandboxSettings.ini exists
Some references describe sandbox values as being created with the world and stored in save data rather than emitted as a standalone file. In that situation, use the host’s panel if available, or consult that host’s Abiotic Factor file-management instructions for world-creation settings. Creating a random file in the root directory is unlikely to affect the running save.
Items remain, but equipment loses durability
That result is consistent with the available information: the zero value governs the item-loss scale, while durability may be controlled separately. Inspect DurabilityLossOnDeathMultiplier and test any change on a backup world. Do not claim that durability is disabled unless your version’s behavior confirms it.

Only one world changed
That is expected for a per-world setting. Apply the same panel selection or file edit to every save that should have no death penalty, and keep each world’s backup separate.

Changing the setting back later
To restore a penalty, stop the server and choose the desired nonzero value in the panel or replace the zero in the world’s configuration with the value matching the behavior in the table above. Restart before testing. Keep the original backup so you can recover if the host’s panel and file disagree.

Why file paths and menu labels vary
Abiotic Factor server administration is exposed through different hosting panels, Windows dedicated-server layouts, and custom launch scripts. The available guidance does not provide a single official path that applies to every installation. Treat the path examples above as patterns, not universal commands, and prefer the file tree and startup configuration used by your own server. The reliable parts of the procedure are the key name, the zero value, a stopped server, and verification on the correct world.
