To stop Microsoft Edge alerts from appearing when your Mac is locked, use the setting that matches how much you want to block. For every app, open Apple menu > System Settings > Notifications and turn off Show Notifications: when screen is locked. To silence only Edge, select Microsoft Edge under Application Notifications and disable Allow notifications. If you want Edge alerts on the desktop or in Notification Center but not on the lock screen, keep notifications enabled and remove Lock Screen from Edge’s alert locations. Website permissions are separate, so a noisy site may need to be blocked in Edge itself.
Why do Microsoft Edge notifications appear on the Mac lock screen?
macOS treats lock-screen delivery as a display choice, while Edge and individual websites control whether a notification is generated in the first place. A website can be permitted to send desktop notifications through Edge, and macOS can then show those alerts in the login window when the display is locked.

Quitting the Edge window does not necessarily end website notifications. Microsoft Support explains that notifications enabled for a website can still appear even when Microsoft Edge is closed. This is why closing every Edge window may not solve the problem: the permission remains active and the operating system can continue presenting the alert.
Website notifications are also different from pop-ups. Microsoft defines pop-ups as advertisements, notices, offers or alerts that open in the current window, a new window or a tab. Blocking notifications will not automatically block every pop-up, and a pop-up blocker will not necessarily revoke a site’s notification permission.

How do I hide lock-screen notifications from every app?
Use macOS’s global lock-screen switch when you do not want any application—including Edge, messaging apps or game launchers—to reveal alerts while the Mac is locked. Desktop notifications and Notification Center behavior can remain enabled.
- Open the Apple menu in the top-left corner and choose System Settings.
- Select Notifications in the sidebar. If you cannot find it, use the System Settings search field and type Notifications.
- In the Notification Center section, find Show Notifications: when screen is locked.
- Turn that switch off.
After this change, notifications can still be delivered to macOS and may remain available on the desktop or in Notification Center, depending on each app’s settings. The lock-screen login window simply stops displaying them. This is the fastest choice if your priority is preventing private game chats, account alerts or browsing activity from being visible to someone looking at a locked Mac.

How do I disable Microsoft Edge notifications without changing other apps?
Use Edge’s per-application entry in macOS Notifications. This blocks Edge alerts broadly, while notifications from other applications continue to follow their own settings.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Notifications.
- Scroll to Application Notifications.
- Select Microsoft Edge.
- Turn off Allow notifications.
With Allow notifications disabled, macOS will not present Edge notifications in the lock screen, on the desktop or in Notification Center. This setting affects the Edge application as a whole; it does not distinguish between one website and another.
What if Microsoft Edge is not listed?
macOS may not show an application until it has generated or received a notification. Trigger a permitted Edge website notification, or wait for one to arrive, then return to System Settings > Notifications and check Application Notifications again. Apple documents the per-application control but does not promise when an app will first be registered.

Choose this option when you still want Edge alerts while you are using the Mac, but do not want those alerts shown in the login window after the display sleeps or the Mac is locked.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Notifications.
- Choose Microsoft Edge under Application Notifications.
- Leave Allow notifications enabled.
- In Edge’s alert-location choices, enable Desktop and/or Notification Center.
- Make sure Lock Screen is not selected.
Apple lists Desktop, Notification Center and Lock Screen as separate alert locations. The Lock Screen location is for notifications received while the Mac is asleep that are shown in the login window. Omitting only that location preserves the other two delivery choices.
How do I block notifications from one website in Microsoft Edge?
Block an individual site when one forum, game service or web app is responsible for the alerts and you want other sites to keep working normally.
Block it from Edge Settings
- Open Microsoft Edge and select the Settings and more menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All sites.
- Find and select the website.
- Locate Notifications and set the permission to Block.
The site’s permission is independent of the macOS global lock-screen switch. Blocking it here stops that website from sending Edge notifications, while other sites can retain their existing permissions.

Block it from the address bar
- Open the website in Edge.
- Select the site-information icon beside the address bar.
- Find the site’s Notifications permission.
- Change the permission to Block.
The address-bar method is useful when you are already on the offending page and do not want to search through the full All sites list.
How do I block website notification requests across Edge?
Turn off Edge’s request prompt when you do not want websites to ask for notification permission in the future. Microsoft’s documented path is Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Notifications.
- Open Edge’s Settings.
- Select Cookies and site permissions.
- Open Notifications.
- Turn Ask before sending off.
Microsoft describes this as blocking browser notifications within Edge. Existing site permissions may still need individual review in the site list, so check previously allowed sites if alerts continue. Edge labels and menu locations can move between releases; search Edge Settings for site permissions if the wording differs.
Which setting should I use for my situation?
The right control depends on whether the problem is the lock screen, the Edge app, one website or all future permission requests.

Why does closing Edge not stop the notifications?
Website notifications are permission-based rather than limited to an open browser window. Microsoft Support states: “When notifications are turned on for a website, they will still appear even if Microsoft Edge is closed.” Closing Edge can therefore remove visible windows without revoking the site’s ability to send alerts.

To stop those alerts, change the macOS Edge notification setting, remove the Lock Screen delivery location, or block the responsible website under Edge’s site permissions. Choose the narrowest control that solves the privacy problem so unrelated sites and applications are not affected.
How are Edge notifications different from pop-ups?
A notification is an operating-system alert delivered through the browser’s permission system. A pop-up is content that opens in the current window, a new window or a tab, such as an advertisement, offer, notice or alert.
If a site is opening tabs or windows, review Edge’s pop-up controls separately. If it is producing banners in macOS Notification Center or the lock screen, review notification permissions. Treating the two mechanisms separately avoids changing the wrong setting and leaving the original annoyance in place.
How do managed Macs control Edge website notifications?
Organizations can set Edge’s default website-notification behavior with the DefaultNotificationsSetting policy on macOS 77 and later. The policy supports allowing, blocking or asking about website desktop notifications.
For administrators who want the default to be blocked, Microsoft documents BlockNotifications as value 2. On macOS, that value is represented through the DefaultNotificationsSetting preference key with integer 2.
This is an administrator control for Edge’s default website behavior, not a replacement for macOS’s lock-screen display switch. A managed Mac can still require the separate macOS setting if the goal is to hide notifications from the login window for every application.

What should I check if notifications still appear?
- Confirm the scope. If every app appears on the lock screen, turn off macOS’s Show Notifications: when screen is locked switch. If only Edge appears, inspect the Edge entry under Application Notifications.
- Check alert locations. Edge can remain enabled while Lock Screen is selected. Remove that location if desktop alerts are still wanted.
- Identify the website. Open Edge’s Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All sites and review notification permissions for recently visited sites.
- Review the address-bar permission. On the site that generated the alert, select the site-information icon and verify that Notifications is set to Block when appropriate.
- Remember closed-browser behavior. A notification arriving while no Edge window is open can still be from a previously authorized website.
- Separate pop-ups from notifications. If the symptom is a new tab or window rather than a macOS alert, adjust Edge’s pop-up settings instead.
- Account for release differences. macOS and Edge may rename or relocate controls. Search System Settings for Notifications and Edge Settings for site permissions.
Can I hide only sensitive game or account alerts while leaving other Edge sites enabled?
Yes. Block notifications for the specific site that carries the sensitive alerts, using All sites or the address-bar permission menu. This leaves permissions for unrelated sites unchanged, unlike disabling Edge’s application notifications.
Will turning off the macOS lock-screen switch delete my notification history?
No deletion is implied by that switch. It controls whether notifications are shown when the screen is locked; desktop and Notification Center delivery can remain configured separately for each app.
Does blocking Edge notifications also block website messages inside open pages?
Not necessarily. The controls described here govern browser notifications delivered through macOS. A message rendered directly inside a website tab is page content and may require that site’s own account, chat or privacy controls.
Can an administrator override my Edge notification choice?
On a managed Mac, an organization can apply the DefaultNotificationsSetting policy for Edge website notifications. If a setting repeatedly returns or cannot be changed, contact the administrator; the policy controls default website behavior, while macOS still has its separate lock-screen presentation setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Microsoft Edge missing from macOS Notifications?
macOS may not add an app to Application Notifications until that app has generated or received a notification. Trigger an Edge notification, then reopen System Settings and check the list again.

Yes. Visit the site in Edge, select the site-information icon beside the address bar, and change its Notifications permission to Block. This affects that site rather than every website.
Will disabling lock-screen notifications stop Edge from sending alerts?
No. The macOS lock-screen switch changes where alerts are displayed. Edge and website permissions can still generate notifications for the desktop or Notification Center unless you disable or block them separately.
What is the Edge policy value for blocking website notifications on managed Macs?
Microsoft documents BlockNotifications as value 2 for the DefaultNotificationsSetting policy on macOS 77 and later. It sets Edge’s default website-notification behavior and does not replace macOS’s lock-screen display control.
