If OneNote keeps showing “Connect to the cloud,” it is usually displaying a first-run account prompt, not reporting that a particular notebook is synchronizing. Update OneNote, repair Microsoft 365, and check the Microsoft 365 Insider channel first. If the prompt still appears in the Windows desktop app, a registry value named FirstBootStatus set to 01000101 is a commonly cited workaround, but it is not a universally supported Microsoft setting. To stop automatic notebook synchronization, use OneNote’s File > Info > View Sync Status dialog and select Sync manually; that is a different action from hiding the startup prompt.

What does OneNote “Connect to the cloud” mean?

The message normally appears during first-run or startup and asks you to connect a Microsoft account so OneNote can synchronize notes and settings across a phone, PC and the web. Microsoft describes the prompt with the wording “Connect to the cloud” and explains that its purpose is cross-device syncing of notes and settings.

Closing or suppressing this message does not, by itself, disconnect an existing notebook from OneDrive or SharePoint. A notebook’s location, the account signed in to OneNote and its synchronization settings determine whether edits are sent to Microsoft’s cloud services.

Prompt, account and notebook are separate states

  • Startup prompt: asks whether OneNote should connect an account for cloud-backed features.
  • Account state: determines which Microsoft account, if any, is signed in to the app.
  • Notebook location: identifies whether a notebook is stored locally or on OneDrive/SharePoint.
  • Sync schedule: controls whether OneNote checks automatically for notebook changes.
  • Local cache: allows offline access to notebook data already stored on the device.

These controls can produce different results. You can hide the first-run prompt while a cloud notebook continues to synchronize, or switch a notebook to manual synchronization while the prompt remains visible.

Which OneNote version are you using?

The instructions differ because Microsoft has used several Windows OneNote products. The desktop application, formerly called OneNote 2016, is distributed with qualifying Microsoft 365 and Office 2019 installations. OneNote for Windows 10 was the separate Windows 10 Store application. The desktop registry path below applies to the Office desktop application, not automatically to the Store app.

Check the application before changing anything

  1. Open OneNote and choose File.
  2. Open Account (or Office Account in some desktop builds).
  3. Look for the product information and installation source. A Microsoft 365/Office desktop installation is the environment in which the Office 16.0 registry path is relevant.
  4. If you are using the former Windows 10 Store app, do not assume a desktop-app registry edit will change its behavior. Update or repair that installation through the Microsoft Store instead.

Build, channel and account configuration can also change which settings are exposed. Work and school installations may have additional restrictions imposed by an administrator.

How do I remove the OneNote sign-in or cloud prompt safely?

Start with supported maintenance steps. They address corrupted files, outdated components and preview-channel changes without editing the Windows registry.

1. Confirm the connection

Make sure Windows has a stable internet connection and that other Microsoft 365 services can reach the network. An unstable connection can leave the status visible because OneNote cannot complete the account or service check. If the prompt disappears after reconnecting, no registry change is needed.

2. Update OneNote from its installation source

For a Microsoft Store installation, open Microsoft Store and use the library or update controls to install the current OneNote update. For an installation obtained from OneNote.com or bundled with Microsoft 365/Office, use that product’s normal update mechanism. Mixing Store and desktop installers can leave you updating a different copy than the one you actually open, so verify the product name in File > Account.

3. Repair Microsoft 365

Repair is the next supported step when the application is current but the prompt persists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft 365 (the entry may include an edition name), select its menu and choose Modify.
  4. Run Quick Repair first. This normally replaces or repairs local program components without a full reinstall.
  5. If Quick Repair does not change the behavior, repeat the process and choose Online Repair. It takes longer and may require the Microsoft 365 installation files and a sign-in.

Close OneNote before starting either repair. Afterward, restart Windows and test the same notebook and account that produced the message.

4. Check Microsoft 365 Insider status

Preview or Insider channels can introduce startup behavior before it reaches the regular release channel. In OneNote, open File > Account > Microsoft 365 Insider. If Insider is enabled, change to a different available channel or opt out, then update Office and restart Windows. An organization may lock this choice; in that case the user cannot change it locally.

Does the FirstBootStatus registry value disable the message?

A third-party troubleshooting procedure recommends setting a DWORD named FirstBootStatus to 01000101 under the Office desktop OneNote key. This can suppress the first-run prompt on some builds, but it is a build-dependent workaround rather than a universally supported Microsoft control.

Back up before editing the registry

  • Create a restore point or export the key before making a change.
  • Use an administrator account only if Windows requests elevation; the key itself is under your user profile.
  • Write down the original value so you can restore it if OneNote behaves differently.
  • Do not use a registry-cleaner utility to make the change automatically.

Registry procedure for the desktop app

  1. Close every OneNote window. In Task Manager, verify that no OneNote process remains if the application refuses to release the key.
  2. Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter. Accept the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0OneNote. The Office 16.0 portion is used by current desktop Office generations even when the product is branded Microsoft 365.
  4. In the right pane, look for a REG_DWORD named FirstBootStatus. If it is absent, create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with that exact name.
  5. Open the value, select Decimal or Hexadecimal as appropriate for your registry editor, and enter the value data 01000101. Keep the leading zeroes; do not enter a different status code.
  6. Close Registry Editor and restart Windows.
  7. Open the same OneNote desktop installation and check whether the startup prompt remains.

The result is not guaranteed across releases, deployment types or user profiles. A Microsoft Q&A response dated March 15, 2018 stated that there was no supported way to disable the window in OneNote 2016. That historical answer and the third-party workaround are not contradictory: the DWORD may work on particular builds, but Microsoft has not treated it as a reliable, documented switch for every installation.

Undoing the workaround

If OneNote stops opening, repeatedly asks for credentials or shows new startup errors, return to the exported key and restore the original value. If you created FirstBootStatus yourself, deleting that value is another reversible test. Restart Windows after reverting it, then use Microsoft 365 repair rather than adding more registry values.

How do I stop OneNote from syncing notebooks automatically?

Use the synchronization controls, not the first-run registry value. In the desktop application, open OneNote > File > Info > View Sync Status, choose Sync manually, and close the dialog.

This changes the schedule for notebook synchronization. It does not remove the Microsoft account, move the notebook off OneDrive or SharePoint, erase the local cache or hide the “Connect to the cloud” startup prompt. When synchronization is manual, you must return to the sync-status area and initiate a sync when you want changes uploaded or downloaded.

What manual sync does not protect you from

  • Edits can remain only on the device until you run a manual sync.
  • Another device may continue to show an older notebook state.
  • Shared notebooks can still contain changes made by other people when you next synchronize.
  • Changing prompt visibility does not change the notebook’s storage location.

Before relying on manual mode, decide whether delayed uploads are acceptable for the notebook. It is useful for controlling network activity, but it increases the chance that an unsynchronized edit will be unavailable on another device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use OneNote without connecting to the cloud?

You can work offline with notebook data that is already cached on the device. Microsoft states that all OneNote versions keep a cached copy of notebooks so they remain accessible while offline. Offline access, however, does not guarantee that later edits will reach OneDrive or SharePoint; synchronization still depends on account, notebook location and sync settings.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Practical offline checklist

  • Open the notebook while you still have access to the account and network, so its latest available content is cached.
  • Record the notebook’s location in File > Info before disconnecting.
  • Make a small test edit, close and reopen OneNote offline, and confirm that the edit remains.
  • Reconnect periodically and run a manual sync if you selected that mode.
  • Do not treat a cached notebook as an independent backup; a damaged profile or device failure can still remove local data.

Can an administrator disable cloud-connected features?

Microsoft 365 includes optional connected experiences: cloud-backed services that an organization can allow or turn off. Microsoft describes these services as optional, but work or school administrators can control whether users are permitted to manage the related settings.

This policy layer is broader than FirstBootStatus. An administrator can affect connected-experience availability across Microsoft 365, while the registry workaround targets a OneNote desktop startup state for one Windows user. If a setting is greyed out or immediately reverts, ask the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator which policy is applied instead of repeatedly editing the registry.

Symptom or goal Most appropriate action What it changes
The prompt appears after a failed connection Stabilize the network, then restart OneNote Allows the account check to complete
OneNote is outdated or damaged Update it, then run Quick Repair and Online Repair if necessary Repairs application components
The installation uses Microsoft 365 Insider Change or leave the Insider channel through File > Account Moves the app to a different release track
You only want to limit automatic notebook traffic Select File > Info > View Sync Status > Sync manually Changes notebook sync scheduling
You want to hide the startup prompt in the desktop app Test FirstBootStatus=01000101 after backing up the key May change first-run prompt behavior on some builds
A work or school setting is locked Contact the Microsoft 365 administrator Addresses organization policy, not a local prompt flag

When to stop troubleshooting

If the prompt continues after updating, repairing, leaving Insider and testing the exact desktop-app registry path, avoid adding unrelated values. Capture the OneNote product and build shown under File > Account, the account type (personal, work or school), the notebook location and whether the prompt appears before or after sign-in. Those details let support or an administrator distinguish an installation problem from an enforced policy.

What is the safest overall approach?

First identify whether you are trying to suppress a startup question or stop notebook synchronization. For the prompt, use network checks, updates, Microsoft 365 repair and Insider-channel review before considering the registry workaround. For synchronization, use the sync-status dialog and understand that manual mode delays uploads rather than disconnecting the notebook. Keep a backup of registry changes and remember that cached offline notebooks are convenient working copies, not proof that cloud synchronization has been disabled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will signing out of OneNote stop the “Connect to the cloud” message?

Signing out changes the account state but does not guarantee that the first-run prompt will be suppressed. The message can return when OneNote starts without an account, especially after an update or repair. Treat sign-out as an account-management action, not as a dedicated prompt-disable setting.

Does turning off OneDrive stop OneNote notebook synchronization?

Not necessarily. OneNote notebooks can be hosted on OneDrive or SharePoint, and synchronization depends on the notebook location and OneNote account state rather than only on the OneDrive desktop client. Check the notebook location in OneNote and use the sync-status controls for a deliberate change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the FirstBootStatus value missing from my registry?

The value may not exist until a particular desktop build creates it, and the Store version may use a different configuration path. If you create it, use the exact Office 16.0 OneNote key and keep an export so the change can be reversed. A missing value is not evidence that the installation is broken.

Can I disable connected experiences for only OneNote?

Microsoft 365 connected-experience controls are broader privacy and service settings, and an administrator may manage them for work or school accounts. They are not documented as a one-for-one replacement for the OneNote startup flag. Check which policy options your account exposes before changing organization-wide settings.
