On a Bukkit-derived Minecraft Java server, disable The End by setting settings.allow-end to false in bukkit.yml. Stop the server first, save the file, and start it again. This blocks normal End-portal access without turning off the Nether. Paper, Spigot, Purpur, and Folia use this setting; Vanilla, Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge do not provide the same built-in switch.

The exact setting to change
Open bukkit.yml in the server’s root directory, or open it through your host’s file manager. Find the settings section and change the line to:

allow-end: falseIf the file already contains allow-end: true, replace only true with false. Keep the indentation and hyphen exactly as shown. Paper’s documentation describes this option as “Whether to load end-type dimensions.” The page was last updated May 12, 2025.
Save the file and start or restart the server. The change is configuration-based: it does not erase the existing End world.

What disabling The End changes
End portals no longer take players there
With allow-end: false, a normally activated End portal does not transfer a player to The End. MC-Node describes the result as: “Players who activate an End portal now simply stay in the Overworld; the portal does nothing.” This applies to the ordinary portal route, including a portal in a stronghold.
Existing End data remains on disk
Disabling the dimension is different from deleting its files. The existing End world, builds, inventories in Ender chests, and generated terrain remain stored while the dimension is disabled. You can turn the setting back on later and make the dimension available again.
Players who were in The End need a warning
EmeraldHost reports that players already in The End are moved back to the Overworld on their next login after the setting is disabled. Tell players before the change so they can remove items from End chests, finish any activity they need to finish, and understand why they may appear in the Overworld when they reconnect.

The file is part of the Bukkit-derived configuration layout. If your server root has no bukkit.yml, that is usually a sign that you are running Vanilla, Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge rather than Paper, Spigot, Purpur, or Folia. Do not create a random file and expect unsupported software to read it.

Step-by-step: disable The End on Paper, Spigot, Purpur, or Folia
- Warn players. Explain that End portals will stop working and that players currently in The End may return to the Overworld when they next log in. Ask them to move valuable items out of Ender chests or other End locations if that matters to your event or season.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the Stop control in your hosting panel or the server’s normal shutdown command. Wait until the console confirms that the process has finished. Editing a live YAML file can be overwritten by a shutdown or leave the server with an incomplete save.
- Open the server root. In an SFTP client, open the directory containing your world folders and configuration files. In a control panel, use its file manager and select the server root, not a plugin-specific folder.
- Open
bukkit.yml. Make a copy before editing if your panel provides a duplicate or download option. The file should contain asettingssection. - Change the value. Set the option to
allow-end: false. A typical section looks like this:

allow-nether: true- Save the file. Confirm that the editor saved plain text YAML and did not add a second extension such as
.txt. Keep the two-space indentation shown in the example unless your existing file uses a different valid indentation style consistently. - Start the server. Use the panel’s Start control or your normal startup process. Watch the console for configuration errors before allowing players to join.
- Test from a controlled account. Attempt to use an End portal after the server is online. With the setting applied, the portal should not move the player to The End. If the player is teleported by a command or plugin instead, follow the bypass section below.
How to disable The End without disabling the Nether
Do not change allow-nether when your goal is to disable The End. The two options belong to different configuration systems and control different dimensions:

Paper documents allow-end in its bukkit.yml reference and documents allow-nether separately in the server.properties reference. Leaving allow-nether=true allows Nether travel while allow-end=false blocks the ordinary End portal route.
Blocking all access versus allowing selected players
Use allow-end: false for a complete shutdown
The built-in toggle is the simplest choice when nobody should enter The End during a season, event, classroom session, or progression phase. It applies server-wide and does not require you to maintain a list of permitted players.
Use a plugin for selective access
If administrators or a particular group still needs access, leave the dimension enabled and control the routes into it. MC-Node recommends plugins such as WorldGuard to deny entry around the portal while granting permissions to approved players, or Multiverse to manage access per world. Exact permission nodes and command syntax vary by plugin version, so use the documentation for the versions installed on your server.

Selective control is also the better fit when you want to block the public stronghold portal but retain an administrative test environment. Test every route players can use, including portals created by plugins and scheduled teleports.
Vanilla, Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge alternatives
These platforms do not read Bukkit’s allow-end option. Adding allow-end to bukkit.yml on one of them will not disable The End because the file is not part of their built-in configuration model.
Datapack
A datapack can be written or installed to intercept or redirect End access, but its functions must match your Minecraft version and the way your server handles portals. Back up the world, install the datapack while the server is stopped, and test it in a copy before using it on a live world.
Mod
Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge servers can use a mod that blocks, redirects, or restricts dimension travel. The mod must match both the loader and the Minecraft version. All players may need the same client-side mod, depending on how the mod is implemented.

Migration to a Bukkit-derived server
If you specifically need the simple bukkit.yml switch and your existing plugins and world are compatible, moving to a Bukkit-derived platform is another option. Treat migration as a separate project: make a complete backup, confirm plugin and mod compatibility, and test the world on a staging copy before changing the production server.

How to reset The End instead of merely disabling it
Disabling the dimension preserves its files. Resetting it is a destructive operation that removes the existing End terrain and structures so a new dimension can generate.
- Stop the server completely. Do not delete dimension data while the server is running.
- Make a full backup. Keep a copy outside the live server directory. A reset cannot be undone by changing
allow-endback totrue. - Identify the correct folder. On Paper-style layouts, the End is commonly stored in
world_the_end. On Vanilla layouts, it is commonly stored inside the main world asDIM1. Actual folder names can differ if you changed the world name or level settings. - Delete only the End dimension data. Do not delete the main world folder or the Nether folder. If you are unsure which directory is the End, stop and verify it with your platform’s world-layout documentation or a test copy.
- Start the server. The next generation of the End creates fresh terrain when the dimension is enabled and first needed.
- Verify the result. Check that the Overworld and Nether still load, then confirm that a newly generated End has the expected seed and structures. Restore the backup if the wrong directory was removed.
Resetting and disabling solve different problems: use the toggle to prevent travel while preserving the world, and delete the dimension only when you intentionally want fresh terrain.

There is no bukkit.yml
Your server is probably Vanilla, Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge, or you are looking in the wrong directory. Confirm the software shown by your startup panel and locate the actual server root. If it is not Bukkit-derived, use a datapack, mod, plugin-based control, or a compatible platform migration instead of creating an unused file.

The portal still appears to work
- Confirm the server was stopped before the file was saved and restarted afterward.
- Check that the edited file is the live server’s
bukkit.yml, not a backup, template, or staging directory. - Check spelling, capitalization, indentation, and the value itself: it must be
allow-end: false. - Check the startup console for YAML or configuration errors.
- Test a normal stronghold portal separately from commands and plugins.
A teleport command still sends players to The End
MC-Node warns that teleport plugins, including commands such as /warp or /tp, can bypass portal blocking. If your policy is complete exclusion, restrict those commands with your permissions system and remove End destinations from warp lists. Also inspect random-teleport, hub, minigame, and scripted-event plugins for direct dimension teleports.

Players report missing progress
Disabling the dimension does not intentionally erase its files, but players who were inside may be returned to the Overworld on their next login. Check the pre-change backup and player-inventory records if your server uses them, and communicate the new policy before re-enabling access.
The server fails to start after editing
Stop attempting repeated edits. Restore the backup copy of bukkit.yml, confirm that the YAML remains valid, and start again. A single misplaced space, duplicate key, or accidental rich-text formatting can prevent a configuration file from being parsed.

Re-enabling The End
To restore ordinary End access on a Bukkit-derived server, stop the server, change allow-end: false back to allow-end: true, save bukkit.yml, and start the server. Because disabling did not delete the world, the previously stored End data should be used again. If you deleted the dimension for a reset, the server will generate a new one instead.
