To download a Core Keeper server world, stop the dedicated server, make a backup with Ctrl+Alt+B, locate the world in the correct save root, and copy the complete world data to your computer or destination server. Windows clients and Linux clients store worlds in different folders, while a dedicated server normally uses its own DedicatedServer or Save/worlds location. A server started with -datapath can use an entirely different root.

The safest transfer is a full copy made while the server is offline. Keep the original CoreKeeperSaves.zip archive until the destination loads the expected map and your characters can join it.

Stop the dedicated server completely
Power down the server before copying, downloading, or uploading any world files. A running server can write changes while the transfer is in progress, leaving an incomplete or internally inconsistent copy. For a hosted server, use the provider’s stop or power-off control and wait until the panel reports that the process has ended. For a local server, close the server process cleanly before opening its save directory.
Do not restart the server until the copy has finished. If you need to make a second copy, stop it again first rather than copying from a live directory.

Create a safety backup
From the Core Keeper main menu, press Ctrl+Alt+B. The game creates an archive named CoreKeeperSaves.zip on the desktop. Leave that archive unchanged and in a safe location until the new copy has been tested. It is your simplest rollback if the wrong slot is copied, a file is omitted, or the destination points at another world.
Decide what you are transferring
There are two common jobs:
- Downloading for safekeeping: copy the world from the client or server to another drive or computer, without changing the live installation.
- Moving to a dedicated server: copy the source world into the server’s save location, then configure or verify the world slot that the server is expected to load.
In either case, preserve the source until the destination has been opened successfully. A copy operation is safer than dragging files away from the original location.

The location depends on whether you are looking at a Steam client save or a dedicated-server save. The <user-id> part of the client path is the Steam account directory on that machine; do not replace it with a display name unless that is how your operating system actually names the folder.

If Windows does not resolve the path, replace <user-id> with the account folder shown inside Steam. Copy the entire world folder or all files belonging to the numbered slot you need. Do not select a file merely because its number looks right; world slots can have companion data that must travel with them.

In your file manager, enable hidden files if necessary, then browse to:
$HOME/.config/unity3d/Pugstorm/Core Keeper/Steam/<user-id>/worlds

You can also enter the equivalent path in a terminal-based file browser. Keep the directory hierarchy intact when making a backup. A folder copied out of worlds should remain identifiable by its original slot and account directory.
Dedicated-server save roots
A Windows dedicated server commonly writes below:

Installation documentation also describes a Saveworlds subfolder. These descriptions are not contradictory: one identifies the server’s save root and the other identifies the world directory within an installation layout. Inspect the server’s actual folders rather than creating a second, parallel save tree.
If the server was launched with -datapath, that argument overrides the normal location. Find the launch configuration, read the path supplied to -datapath, and inspect that directory for the save data. Copying files into the default DedicatedServer folder will have no effect when the running service is configured to use a custom path.

Understand slots, numbers, and companion files
World slots and their filenames are numbered. The number identifies a slot, not necessarily the world name that players use in conversation. Before copying, note which slot contains the map you want and which slot the destination server is configured to load.
When the source presents a complete world folder, copy that folder as a unit. When it presents individual numbered files, copy the relevant world file together with its companion files from the same slot. For example, a hosting panel may accept an individual file such as 0.world.gzip, but that does not mean every installation should be reduced to one arbitrarily selected file. Retain the complete set supplied by the source unless the destination’s instructions specifically require a single file.
If the server starts with a different map after the transfer, do not immediately rename files at random. First compare the configured world index with the copied filename numbering, then correct the selection while the server remains stopped. Keep the original backup in case the wrong slot is overwritten.
Download a client world to another computer
This procedure is appropriate when you want an offline backup, want to move a world between PCs, or need to prepare a world before uploading it to a server.

- Exit the game or return to its main menu, then press
Ctrl+Alt+Bto createCoreKeeperSaves.zipon the desktop. - Open the client
worldsdirectory for your operating system using the paths above. - Identify the numbered world slot you intend to keep. If the directory contains a complete world folder, select that folder; if it contains files, select the world file and every companion file associated with the same slot.
- Copy the selection to a separate drive, network share, or temporary transfer folder. Do not edit, rename, compress again, or open the files while the copy is still running.
- On the destination computer, place the copy in the matching client
worldsdirectory. Preserve the account-folder hierarchy rather than dropping files into a neighboring directory. - Start the game and check the world list. Open the transferred world and confirm that the terrain, bases, storage, and player progress are present before deleting or altering the original.
If you are preparing the files for a dedicated server instead, stop after making the clean copy. The destination server has a different save root, described in the next procedure.
Move a client world to a dedicated server
- Back up the source: create
CoreKeeperSaves.zipwithCtrl+Alt+Band keep it outside the folders you plan to replace. - Locate the source: use the Windows or Linux client path and identify the numbered world slot.
- Stop the destination: shut down the dedicated server before touching its save directory. A hosted panel should show the server as offline, not merely disconnected from the game.
- Find the destination root: inspect the default
DedicatedServerlocation, the installation’sSaveworldsfolder, or the directory specified by-datapath. - Prepare the folder: if the server has already created a
worldsdirectory, use that directory. If it has not, you can let the server complete its first save after a player joins, stop it again, and then copy the world; alternatively, create the expectedworldsfolder manually before copying. - Copy the world: place the complete source world folder, or the complete numbered file set required by the destination, into the server’s world directory. Do not modify file contents during the transfer.
- Check slot selection: compare the copied filename number with the server’s configured world index. If the server is set to load another index, change the configuration or use the intended slot while the server is still stopped.
- Start and verify: launch the server, join with a test player, and confirm that the expected map and progress load. Check a known base, chest, or other landmark rather than relying only on the world name.
- Retain the rollback: keep both the original source and
CoreKeeperSaves.zipuntil the destination has been checked by the players who depend on it.
Upload a world to a hosted server
Hosting control panels generally provide a file manager or upload control. The server must be powered down before the upload. Depending on the host’s layout, you may upload the Steam-ID folder or an individual world file such as 0.world.gzip. Follow the panel’s stated destination path, but preserve the source’s numbering and companion files when it accepts a folder or multiple files.
- Stop the server from the hosting panel and wait for the process to finish.
- Make a local copy of the world and retain the desktop backup archive.
- Open the panel’s file manager and navigate to the server’s world directory, commonly the equivalent of
Save/worlds. - Upload the copied folder or required numbered file set. If the panel specifically requests a Steam-ID folder, upload that folder rather than flattening its contents into an unrelated directory.
- Check that filenames and capitalization match the source. Do not let the browser upload silently skip a companion file.
- Verify the server’s configured world index before starting it.
- Start the server, join, and inspect a recognizable area. If the wrong world loads, stop the server and correct the index or path instead of overwriting more files.
An always-on hosted server is useful when players need access while your own computer is off, but it adds an upload interface and a second path configuration to maintain. Keep an offline copy under your control even after the hosted world works.
Why the worlds folder may be missing
A newly created dedicated server may not have a worlds directory yet. This can simply mean it has not completed its first save. Let it run until a player joins and the initial save is written, then stop it and inspect the directory again. If you prefer to prepare the location first, create the expected worlds folder under the active server save root and copy the world while the server is stopped.
Do not create the folder in the default location if the launch command includes -datapath. The custom path is authoritative, so the new folder belongs beneath that path.
Troubleshoot a transfer that does not work
The server loads a new or different world
- Stop the server before making changes.
- Confirm that the copied file number matches the configured world index.
- Check that you copied into the active save root, especially if
-datapathis present. - Ensure the complete folder or companion-file set was uploaded rather than one unrelated numbered file.
The world directory is empty
- Verify that the server has completed an initial save or create the expected
worldsfolder manually. - Check the dedicated-server root and the installation-relative
Saveworldslocation. - Read the launch configuration for a custom
-datapath.
The upload appears incomplete
- Keep the server powered off and compare the destination file list with the source.
- Re-upload from a fresh copy instead of editing a partially transferred set.
- For a panel that accepts only one world file, use the exact file format it requests, such as
0.world.gzip; for a folder-based layout, preserve the folder and its companions.
The world opens but recent progress is missing
- Confirm that the source was copied after the latest session ended and that the server was stopped before copying.
- Restore from the untouched
CoreKeeperSaves.ziparchive if the wrong snapshot was transferred. - Do not delete the original until the expected progress has been verified in game.
Local transfer versus hosted upload

A reliable backup routine after the move
Once the destination is confirmed, make a repeatable schedule rather than relying on a single migration archive. Stop the server for each manual snapshot, copy the current world data to dated storage, and retain at least one copy separate from the machine that runs the server. Keep the first CoreKeeperSaves.zip until you have established that the new routine produces restorable files.
When replacing an older destination world, move the old destination folder aside instead of deleting it immediately. That gives you a second rollback point if the newly copied slot or index is wrong. Only remove older copies after players have confirmed that the intended world, structures, inventories, and recent progress are all present.
