What WorldGuard does—and what it requires
WorldGuard is a Bukkit plugin that places protection rules around three ideas: a geometric region, the people allowed to build there, and flags that change behavior inside it. A newly defined region prevents non-members from building, while members and owners can build by default. You can then change specific behavior, such as PvP, entry, explosions, mob spawning, interaction, or the message shown when an action is denied.
The server implementation is the first compatibility decision. WorldGuard requires a server that supports the Bukkit API, including Paper and Spigot. It does not run on a vanilla server, and Forge and Sponge implementations are not supported. The required dependency is the Bukkit build of WorldEdit; installing a different server-platform build will not satisfy WorldGuard.

Pre-install checklist
- A running Paper or Spigot server (or another implementation that supports the Bukkit API).
- The WorldGuard JAR and the Bukkit version of WorldEdit.
- File access to the server directory and permission to restart it.
- Operator status or a permissions-plugin setup that grants the WorldGuard nodes you need.
Install WorldGuard and WorldEdit
Installation is a file operation. Both plugins must be present before you expect region commands to work.
- Stop the Minecraft server if it is running.
- Open the server’s main directory. Create a folder named
pluginsif one does not already exist. - Copy the WorldGuard JAR and the Bukkit WorldEdit JAR into
plugins. Keep the JAR files directly in that folder rather than inside another directory. - Start the server.
- Read the startup log. Look for plugin-load errors, dependency errors, or a message indicating that WorldGuard and WorldEdit enabled successfully.
- If either plugin fails to load, stop and correct that error before defining regions. A missing dependency, an incompatible server implementation, or a mismatched build is more useful to fix than to work around.
After a successful start, join the server with the account you will use for administration. If commands are rejected, confirm operator status or grant the specific permission nodes described later in this guide.
Create your first protected region
The quickest useful test is a spawn region. Select the area with WorldEdit, define it in WorldGuard, and then test as a player who is not a member.
1. Select the area
Give the administrator access to the WorldEdit selection tool and mark the spawn boundary. WorldGuard accepts cuboid selections and two-dimensional polygon selections with a height range. A cuboid is usually easiest for a building, plaza, or rectangular town; a polygon is useful when the boundary follows a road, shoreline, or other irregular outline.
Make the selection large enough to cover the blocks and vertical space you intend to protect. A selection that stops below a roof or above a basement leaves those blocks outside the region.
2. Define the region
With the selection active, run:
/rg define spawn
/region define spawn is the long form. Region names are unique and case-insensitive, so choose a name that will remain clear to staff. The new region blocks non-members from building by default.

3. Add builders or owners
Add an individual as a member when that player should be able to edit but should not administer the region:
/rg addmember spawn PlayerName
You can add a group recognized by your permissions setup with the group syntax:
/rg addmember spawn g:builders
Add an owner only when the player should manage the region’s membership or settings:
/rg addowner spawn PlayerName
Keep ordinary builders as members. Ownership is an administrative role, not merely another way to grant block access.
4. Inspect and maintain it
/rg info spawndisplays the region’s current details./rg listlists regions available in the world./rg redefine spawnreplaces the selection used by the existing region./rg remove spawndeletes the region.
WorldGuard saves changes after a short delay. Use /rg save when you need to force a save; it runs in the background so the server can continue handling players.
5. Test from both sides of the rule
Test once with an account that is not a member and once with an intended builder. The first account should be unable to place or break blocks in the region; the member should be able to edit it. Testing both identities catches accidental ownership, a selection mistake, and permission bypasses before the region matters.

Control behavior with flags
Membership controls the basic build boundary. Flags alter particular behavior inside that boundary. Set a flag with:
/rg flag <region> <flag> <value>
Omit the value to unset a flag and return it to its inherited or default behavior. Use the narrowest flag that solves the problem instead of applying a broad protection setting reflexively. Many protection checks follow the result of the build permission, so membership and region boundaries should remain the foundation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon spawn and arena recipes
| Goal | Command | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Disable PvP at spawn | /rg flag spawn pvp deny |
Prevents player-versus-player combat according to the region’s flag group. |
| Prevent entry to a restricted area | /rg flag secret_club entry deny |
Denies entry according to the region’s membership and flag rules. |
| Show a custom denial message | /rg flag spawn deny-message Sorry! You are at spawn. |
Displays that message when WorldGuard denies an action. |
| Block teleport commands | /rg flag spawn blocked-cmds /tp,/teleport |
Blocks the listed commands in the region. |
| Stop fire from spreading | /rg flag spawn fire-spread deny |
Denies fire spread in the region. |
| Stop creeper explosions | /rg flag spawn creeper-explosion deny |
Denies creeper explosions in the region. |
| Stop mob spawning | /rg flag spawn mob-spawning deny |
Denies mob spawning in the region. |
These commands change behavior; they do not automatically turn every player into a builder. If a player should edit spawn, add that player or group as a member instead of relying on an unrelated flag.
Apply a flag to a specific region group
WorldGuard’s internal flag groups are all, members, owners, nonmembers, and nonowners. They are not the same thing as groups in a permissions plugin. Select one with -g, for example:
/rg flag spawn -g nonmembers pvp deny
This targets non-members without confusing WorldGuard’s membership test with a separately managed staff or rank group. Check the group you intend to affect before testing the flag.
Entry, interaction, and other boundaries
Use an entry flag when the requirement is physically keeping players out, rather than merely preventing block edits. Use interaction-related flags when players may enter but should not use containers, buttons, or other interactive blocks. Explosions, fire spread, and mob spawning are separate behavior decisions; set only the ones your area needs.

Design regions before they become complicated
A reliable design answers five questions for every region:
- Who can build: members, owners, both, or nobody except staff with a deliberate bypass?
- Which behavior changes: PvP, entry, explosions, interaction, spawning, messages, or commands?
- Does the region overlap another region, and which one should take precedence?
- Is it a protection boundary or only a flag area?
- Which staff accounts receive the permissions to administer it?
| Design | Use it when | Important setting |
|---|---|---|
| Protected build region | A spawn, shop, museum, or completed build must resist edits. | Define the region and add only approved members or owners. |
| Builder workspace | A designated team needs to edit while the public cannot. | Add individual builders or g:builders as members. |
| Behavior-only arena | You need a PvP, entry, explosion, or spawning rule without another build restriction. | Use the required flag and set /rg flag arena passthrough allow when the region should not add a build check. |
| Nested exception | A smaller room or plot must override a larger protected area. | Use parent/child inheritance and an appropriate priority. |
Understand overlapping regions
WorldGuard permits regions to overlap, but the result is stricter than many administrators expect: a player must have build permission in every overlapping region. Being a member of one region does not automatically grant permission in another region covering the same block.
Why a builder can still be blocked
Suppose town covers a whole settlement and workshop covers a builder’s area inside it. A builder who is a member of workshop but not town still fails the build check from town. Add the builder to every overlapping build-protection region that should permit the edit, or redesign the boundaries so the checks match the intended responsibility.
Recommended Free Tools
Use priority and inheritance deliberately
Priorities and parent/child inheritance determine which region should override or pass settings to another. Use a parent for broad defaults and a child for a smaller exception, then verify the resulting membership and flags with /rg info. Do not assume that the visually smaller region automatically wins; the relationship must be configured.
Make flag-only regions pass through
A region created only to set PvP or another behavior can accidentally introduce a build restriction if it is treated as a normal protected region. Set:
/rg flag arena passthrough allow
That tells WorldGuard not to use the flag-only region as an additional build boundary. The arena can still provide its intended behavior flag while the underlying build regions decide who may edit.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Permissions for administrators and staff
WorldGuard defaults to no permissions. Being an operator may provide broad access depending on the server, but a permissions plugin should grant the smallest set of nodes each staff role needs.

Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see
WorldGuard commands are unknown
- Confirm the server is Paper, Spigot, or another Bukkit-API implementation. Vanilla, Forge, and Sponge are not supported.
- Confirm both JAR files are directly inside
plugins. - Read the startup log for a failed WorldEdit dependency or a plugin load error.
- Restart after correcting the files rather than assuming a failed load will repair itself.
The command exists but permission is denied
Check operator status and the permissions-plugin nodes. WorldGuard does not grant administrative permissions by default. Start with the narrow node required for the task instead of assigning a global bypass.
Players can build inside a region
Use /rg info regionName to confirm that the region exists in the world where you are testing and that its selection covers the block. Check whether the player has been added as a member or owner, whether the account has a bypass node, and whether another configuration intentionally allows passage. Test from a non-member account with no bypass.
Builders still cannot edit after being added
Look for a second overlapping region. Because build permission must succeed in every overlapping region, add the builder to the other protected region or adjust the region design. If the second region is only for PvP or another behavior, set its passthrough flag to allow.

Verify the spelling, value, region name, and flag group. A command aimed at nonmembers will not affect a member. Also check whether a parent, child, or higher-priority region supplies a competing setting. Inspect the region and test with an account that belongs to the group the flag targets.
The selection is the wrong shape or height
Reselect the intended cuboid or polygon, include the full vertical area that needs protection, and run /rg redefine regionName. Then inspect the region and test at its edges, corners, highest block, and lowest block.
A safe operating routine
- Install WorldGuard and Bukkit WorldEdit, then verify both in the startup log.
- Create one small test region before protecting the whole server.
- Test a non-member, a member, and an administrator without bypass where possible.
- Add only the flags required by the area’s purpose.
- Document overlapping regions, their priorities, and their parent/child relationships for staff.
- Force a save with
/rg saveafter a significant maintenance session. - Re-test after changing permissions, memberships, boundaries, or flags.
With this workflow, WorldGuard remains understandable: regions define where rules apply, membership defines who can build, flags define what behavior changes, and overlap settings explain why a rule wins when areas intersect.
