Can I put Mario & Yoshi in a display case?

Check the case before buying
- Measure the shelf opening, including the clearance needed to slide the case into place.
- Compare that opening with the case’s approximate external size: 13.5 inches wide, 5.9 inches deep and 16.9 inches high.
- Compare the finished build with the approximate internal size: 12.9 inches wide, 5.4 inches deep and 16.7 inches high.
- Confirm how the cover is lifted or removed. A tall top panel may need more vertical room than the assembled case itself.
- Ask the seller how the front and rear controls are reached. The observed listing does not answer that question.
Do not treat “fits inside” as “can be operated inside.” A cover, rear panel or narrow opening can trap the hand even when no LEGO element touches the acrylic.

Can I still turn the crank in a case?
Only if the case leaves a practical opening for your hand at the base and does not force the handle against a wall or panel. The rear tongue dial needs its own access path; reaching the crank from the front does not solve a blocked dial.
Test access without risking the model
- Place a temporary box or sheets of cardboard around the assembled model to represent the case walls.
- Insert your hand at the same angle you would use on the base handle.
- Reach behind Yoshi’s head and turn the dial through its full intended motion.
- Check that your knuckles do not brush the sprite layers, base edges or acrylic.
- If either control is awkward, plan to lift the cover for every animation session or use an open shelf instead.
This is a practical clearance check, not a manufacturer-approved operating specification. The case maker’s dimensions cannot establish control access by themselves.
How should I position the model for the best view?
Face the sprite artwork toward the main viewing direction and keep the model high enough that the layered front is not hidden by a desk edge. LEGO’s own announcement shows the finished build on a shelf; that arrangement also leaves the base available for manual operation.
Front and side clearance
Keep the front unobstructed so the pixel-art silhouette reads as one image. Avoid placing taller sets, speakers or books directly beside Yoshi’s head, where they can hide the tongue movement. Do not press the back of the model against a wall if that blocks the dial.

Backdrop and lighting
An uncluttered backdrop can make the layered sprite stand out. Indirect room light is a sensible styling choice; avoid a lamp that shines heat directly onto the model or casts glare across the acrylic. Any riser or lamp must preserve access to both controls.
Orientation for shared rooms
If people approach from several directions, prioritize the side from which the crank will be used most often. A slight turn can make a rear control easier to reach, but too much rotation compromises the front-on composition. Decide which goal matters more before fixing the model in a tight corner.
Do the Action Tag and digital features change the display setup?
No electronic figure is needed to display or crank 71438. The included Action Tag enables digital reactions only when it is read by a separately purchased interactive LEGO Mario figure 71439, Luigi 71440 or Peach 71441.

- Clear the controls. Remove objects that could catch the base handle or block the rear dial.
- Lift from the base. Support the sturdy lower structure with two hands rather than pulling on Yoshi’s head, tongue or decorative front layers.
- Set it down gently. Check that the base sits flat and that turning the handle does not make the shelf vibrate.
- Confirm the front view. Align the sprite face with the room’s main sightline before adding a case, backdrop or riser.
- Recheck both controls. Turn the handle and move the rear dial carefully through their normal motions.
- Secure the surroundings. Keep pets, loose cables and frequently moved objects from contacting the build.
For a move between rooms, remove a case cover first and carry the model with the base supported. If a decorative section comes loose, stop handling that area until you can identify its location in the official 71438 instructions.
How do I clean and care for the displayed model?
LEGO advises hand-cleaning ordinary pieces with a soft cloth or sponge and water no hotter than 104°F (40°C). Do not put the model or loose pieces in a washing machine or dishwasher, and do not use high heat. LEGO also warns against leaving washed pieces in direct sunlight while they dry.
Routine dusting
- Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth or a soft brush with light pressure on exposed surfaces.
- Work around the layered front instead of dragging a cloth across thin decorative elements.
- Move the crank and rear dial only as needed; forcing a dusty mechanism can transfer grit into moving joints.
