The easiest current way to display an Xbox on a Windows PC is Xbox Remote Play. It streams the screen from your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S to a supported web browser, so you do not need an Xbox app, HDMI input, capture card, command, or registry change.

Open xbox.com/remoteplay, sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your console, select the Xbox, and start playing with a compatible controller.

What you need

  • An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
  • A Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC running version 22H2 or later.
  • A supported web browser.
  • A Microsoft account with an Xbox profile and access to the target console.
  • A compatible Xbox controller.
  • A reliable internet connection. Microsoft lists 5-GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data and at least 10 Mbps download bandwidth for Remote Play.

Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox. It is different from Xbox Cloud Gaming, which streams games from Microsoft’s servers at xbox.com/play.

Step 2: Check the Xbox power setting

  1. Open a supported browser on the Windows PC.
  2. Go to xbox.com/remoteplay.
  3. Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox.
  4. Select the console you want to use.

Remote Play versus connecting the Xbox with HDMI

Most laptops and desktop monitors cannot accept an Xbox video signal through their HDMI ports. Their HDMI ports are usually outputs, not inputs. Plugging an Xbox into one generally will not display the console.

For a physical HDMI connection, the PC or monitor must have a genuine HDMI input. If the computer has no HDMI input, you need a separate USB or PCIe capture device. Remote Play is simpler because it sends the Xbox display over the network instead of through an HDMI cable.

Why the Xbox app is not the required method

Older guides often tell Windows users to open the Xbox app and choose a console-streaming button. That should not be treated as the current universal procedure. Microsoft’s current Remote Play page directs PC users to the browser-based Remote Play experience, while the Xbox app for Windows is documented separately.

You also do not need a Command Prompt command, PowerShell command, registry edit, port-forwarding command, or Xbox console command for the standard setup.

Fix common Remote Play problems

The Remote features option is missing

Install any available Xbox system update, sign in to the console, and return to Settings → Devices & connections → Remote features. The Xbox must be a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The console does not appear in the browser

  • Confirm that the browser is signed in with the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox.
  • Check that Remote features are enabled.
  • Make sure the console is on or using its supported low-power standby setting rather than fully powered off.
  • Confirm that the console is an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
  • Check that the Xbox and PC can reach the internet.

The video is black or unusable

If you are attempting an HDMI connection, verify that the computer has an actual HDMI input. If it does not, use Remote Play or install a compatible capture device. An ordinary laptop HDMI port normally cannot receive video from an Xbox.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Remote Play is laggy even though the connection exceeds 10 Mbps

The 10 Mbps figure is a minimum listed download requirement, not a guarantee of low latency. Interference, distance from the router, packet loss, congestion, and limited upload performance at the console’s location can still cause delay, image degradation, or disconnections.

  • Use 5-GHz Wi-Fi where possible.
  • Move the PC closer to the router or use a less congested network.
  • Reduce other heavy network traffic.
  • Check the internet connection at the Xbox as well as at the PC.
  • Use a wired connection where practical.

Can you use Xbox Cloud Gaming instead?

Yes, but it solves a different problem. Xbox Cloud Gaming streams supported games from Microsoft’s servers and does not display the screen of your physical Xbox. Its current options include Stream your own game and Buy and stream select games, but those remain cloud-streaming features rather than Remote Play from your console.

Best method by situation

What you want Best option
Play your own Xbox remotely on a Windows PC Xbox Remote Play in a browser
Display Xbox video through a cable A monitor with HDMI input, or a capture device
Play supported games without using your console Xbox Cloud Gaming
Use a keyboard and mouse instead of a controller Not generally supported as a replacement for the Remote Play controller

Bottom line

For most Windows users, enable Remote features on the Xbox, keep the console on or in its supported low-power mode, then visit xbox.com/remoteplay in a browser. Use a compatible controller and a stable 5-GHz connection. Only choose HDMI or a capture device if you specifically need a physical video connection and have hardware that accepts Xbox input.
