You do not need an Xbox Game Pass subscription for Fortnite, although you do need a free Microsoft account.
What you need
- A Windows PC running Windows 10 October 2020 Update or later.
- Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. Microsoft identifies these browsers for Cloud Gaming keyboard-and-mouse support.
- A USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
- A free Microsoft account.
- An internet connection of at least 20 Mbps. Epic recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi and says a wired connection is best for network quality.
Fortnite is free to play through Xbox Cloud Gaming, so an Xbox Game Pass subscription is not required. Availability can vary by region and service status.

- Connect your keyboard and mouse to the Windows PC before launching the game.
- Open the latest version of Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.
- Go to Xbox.com/play.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Search for or select Fortnite.
- Choose the option to launch the game and wait for the Cloud Gaming stream to load.
- Switch the browser to full-screen mode by pressing F11. Keyboard-and-mouse input may not work while the stream is displayed in a normal browser window.
- Click inside the game stream, then test movement with WASD and camera movement with the mouse.
Microsoft’s support guidance specifically says that Cloud Gaming must be in full-screen mode for keyboard and mouse input to work. This is browser streaming rather than the native Windows PC version of Fortnite, so input behavior depends on the Cloud Gaming stream and the particular game.

Fortnite control settings
Once Fortnite is running, open the game’s settings and check the keyboard-and-mouse control bindings. Adjust movement, building, weapon selection, crouch, sprint, interact, and sensitivity settings to your preference. The Xbox Cloud Gaming listing currently includes Adjustable input sensitivity, but its visible input labels currently show Play with Controller and Play with Touch rather than a separate mouse-and-keyboard label. That listing does not, by itself, mean that a Windows browser stream cannot accept keyboard and mouse input; Microsoft’s Cloud Gaming support guidance is the relevant setup reference.
If the mouse stops working
The browser stream captures the pointer so that mouse movement controls Fortnite. If the pointer has been released, the mouse can appear to stop working even though the game is still running.

- Click the game stream again.
- Make sure the browser is still in full-screen mode by pressing F11 if necessary.
- If you previously pressed F9, press or use the browser’s stream controls to restore pointer capture. Microsoft Community troubleshooting guidance identifies F9 as the shortcut that releases the mouse pointer from the stream.
- Return to Fortnite and test the mouse in a menu or during gameplay.
Keyboard and mouse do not work at all
- Confirm that you are on a Windows PC, not a phone or tablet.
- Use Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome rather than assuming that any browser supports Cloud Gaming keyboard-and-mouse input.
- Enter full-screen mode with F11 after the game stream loads.
- Click inside the stream so it has focus.
- Reconnect the keyboard or mouse, or try a different USB port.
- Close other tabs or bandwidth-heavy applications if the stream is lagging or failing to register input.
- Restart the Cloud Gaming session and reconnect the devices before launching Fortnite again.
Safari and other browsers may support browser access to Xbox Cloud Gaming in some circumstances, but the available Microsoft guidance identifies Edge and Chrome for keyboard-and-mouse features. Therefore, Edge or Chrome is the safer choice for this setup.
Can you use keyboard and mouse on mobile?
No—not for Fortnite on mobile. Epic says keyboard and mouse cannot be used with Fortnite on mobile devices, including when the game is streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, or Amazon Luna. A phone or tablet therefore cannot be used as the keyboard-and-mouse setup described here. Use touch controls or a supported controller on mobile, or move to a Windows PC for keyboard and mouse.

Does your Fortnite progress carry over?
Yes, provided the Microsoft/Xbox account is linked to the same Epic Games account you use on your other platforms. Sign in with the correct account before starting Fortnite. If progress, cosmetics, or purchases appear to be missing, check the account links rather than creating or using a different Epic account.
Can using a keyboard and mouse get you banned?
Epic states that using external devices such as keyboards, mice, controllers, or microphones does not by itself result in a Fortnite account ban. However, Epic also notes that Player Support does not provide technical support for every external device. Device compatibility and Cloud Gaming input behavior can therefore vary.

Cloud Gaming versus the native PC version
Xbox Cloud Gaming runs Fortnite on Microsoft’s remote gaming service and streams the result to your browser. Your keyboard and mouse send input through that stream. The native PC version runs locally on your Windows computer.

Cloud Gaming is useful when you want to play without installing the full PC game, but it is more sensitive to internet quality, latency, browser compatibility, and pointer capture. If you need the most predictable keyboard-and-mouse behavior, the native PC version is a separate option; the steps above apply specifically to Fortnite through Xbox Cloud Gaming.
