For a digital PS4 license, find the PS5 game in the PlayStation Store or your library and claim the offer from its game hub. A disc-based upgrade remains tied to the disc: you must keep that disc inserted every time you play the PS5 digital version.
Not every PS4 game has a remaster, and “free” is determined by the title’s current offer. Region matching, account ownership, console hardware and time limits can all affect eligibility.

What the PS4-to-PS5 upgrade actually gives you
A PS5 remaster or native PS5 version is a separate build of a game made for PlayStation 5. It may include higher resolution, faster loading, improved frame rates or other title-specific changes. It is not the same thing as simply running the PS4 build through PS5 backward compatibility.

A compatible PS4 game may continue to run as a PS4 version, sometimes with PS5 system features such as Game Boost, while another title may show a dedicated PS5 upgrade offer. Some backward-compatible games can still have missing functions or errors.

When the upgrade is free
There is no universal free-upgrade policy. Sony states that an individual title’s offer can be free, require a purchase, or be available only for a limited time. The price and eligibility shown on that game’s hub are the controlling terms. If the hub shows a price, the upgrade is not free under the offer currently attached to your account and copy.

Before you start: eligibility checks
Run these checks before downloading anything. They explain most cases in which an upgrade option is missing.
- Confirm that the specific game offers a PS5 upgrade. Backward compatibility by itself is not evidence of a remaster.
- Identify your PS4 copy. A disc follows the physical-disc process; a digital purchase follows the digital-license process.
- Check the console model. A physical disc requires a PS5 with a working disc drive. PS4 discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition.
- Use the correct PlayStation account. For a digital copy, sign in to the account that owns the license. For a disc, the account and disc must be from the same country or region.
- Check whether the copy came from PlayStation Plus. PS4 games redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit are not eligible unless Sony specifically says that title is an exception.
- Read the offer’s time and price conditions. Some promotions are limited-time, and a discounted upgrade is different from a free upgrade.
Keep enough storage available for the PS5 build and any required update. Sony notes that a PS4 disc normally begins installing when inserted and that an update may be required; the upgrade download is a separate PS5 installation.
Install a free upgrade from a physical PS4 disc
This route applies only to a PS4 game disc that has an active upgrade offer and a PS5 console with a disc drive.
- Sign in on the PS5. Use the PlayStation account you intend to use for the game. If the disc was bought in another country or region, verify that it matches the account region before proceeding.
- Insert the PS4 disc. The console may begin installing the PS4 version automatically. Let that process finish or continue in the background while you check the upgrade offer.
- Open the game hub. Highlight the game on the home screen or in Game Library and press X. The hub is where the title-specific PS5 offer appears.
- Select the upgrade offer. Look for wording that identifies the PS5 version or upgrade. The offer page will show whether the entitlement is free, discounted or full-price and whether a time limit applies.
- Review the terms and choose Download or the shown purchase option. A free offer proceeds with Download. A paid or discounted offer requires you to complete the purchase at the displayed price before downloading.
- Wait for the PS5 version to install. The download and installation can run alongside the PS4 installation, subject to your available storage and network connection. Do not eject the disc during the license check.
- Launch the PS5 build. If both versions are installed, verify that you are starting the entry marked PS5 rather than the PS4 build.
The disc is still required
The disc is the proof of ownership for this type of entitlement. Sony’s support wording is explicit: “After the download is complete, you can play the PS5 digital game by inserting the PS4 game disc. You need to keep the disc inserted each time to play the game.” Removing the disc after installation does not convert the upgrade into an independent digital license. If you lend, sell or lose the disc, the installed PS5 build will not launch for you.

Install a free upgrade from a digital PS4 license
Digital owners can use either PS5 model because no disc is needed for authentication.
- Sign in to the account that bought or redeemed the PS4 game. A different account on the same console may not see the entitlement.
- Open PlayStation Store or Search. Find the PS5 version of the game rather than assuming the PS4 listing will change automatically.
- Open the game hub. Select the version or upgrade panel associated with the PS5 edition.
- Inspect the current offer. Confirm that the page says free, or note the exact discounted price and any expiration condition.
- Select Download or complete the purchase. After the entitlement is added, the PS5 version downloads to the console.
- Use Game Library to verify installation. The PS5 build should appear as an available version once installation completes.
If the store shows only a purchase button, check the signed-in account and the title’s eligibility before paying. A PS4 digital license does not automatically make every PS5 release free.

Having both builds on one console can cause confusion because the icon and title may look nearly identical. Use Sony’s version selector instead of repeatedly launching the wrong build:
- Open Game Library.
- Highlight the game.
- Press X.
- Select the ellipsis (…) menu.
- Choose the PS4 or PS5 version.
In this selector, a PS4 build shows “PS4” beside the title. The PS5 build shows the game title without that PS4 label. This is also the quickest way to confirm whether the upgrade actually installed.
Why the “free upgrade” option is missing
The game has no PS5 upgrade offer
A game can run on PS5 through backward compatibility without having a remaster. Recheck the game hub and the publisher’s title-specific terms; compatibility alone does not create an upgrade entitlement.

You are using a PS5 Digital Edition with a disc
PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition. The disc-based offer requires a PS5 with a disc drive. A digital license is the alternative route on that console.

The account does not own the digital license
Sign out and back in with the account that purchased the PS4 game. Console sharing does not change which account owns the license, and a guest account may see the game without qualifying for its upgrade.
The disc and account regions do not match
Sony requires the physical disc and PlayStation account to come from the same country or region for the upgrade entitlement. Imported discs can therefore show a different price or no offer even when the same title is sold locally.
The copy was claimed through PlayStation Plus
Games redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit are excluded unless Sony specifically identifies that title as eligible. Owning the game through a subscription benefit is not the same as buying the qualifying license.
The promotion expired or changed price
Upgrade terms can be time-limited. Open the game hub and read the current price and date conditions rather than relying on an old announcement or a previously seen store page.

The PS4 version is launching by default
The offer may have succeeded while the console continues to launch the older build. Use Game Library → highlight the game → X → ellipsis (…) → choose PS5, then check the label beside the title.
Physical versus digital: the practical trade-offs

The physical path is useful if you already own the disc and have a disc-drive PS5, but it never removes the need to keep that disc available. The digital path is simpler on a Digital Edition console, provided the purchasing account is accessible.

Treat the offer displayed on the game hub as the source of truth. Three outcomes are possible:
- Free: the page provides a Download option without an upgrade charge.
- Paid or discounted: the page requires a purchase at the price shown before the PS5 download begins.
- Limited-time: the page states a deadline or temporary condition; claiming it after that period may cost more or may no longer be possible.
Do not infer the price from the PS4 game’s original retail price, a retailer listing or another region’s store. Upgrade programs are title-specific and can vary by country, account and date.
Hardware choices for a physical PS4 library
Sony lists a PlayStation 5 Console – 1TB disc model that plays PS4 and PS5 games on Blu-ray discs and also supports digital downloads. That type of console is the direct hardware fit for someone whose qualifying games are on disc.

Sony also documents a separately sold PS5 Disc Drive for compatible CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. Internet pairing is required during setup. Check the exact console model and the drive’s compatibility list before buying; an add-on drive is not a universal solution for every PS5 revision.
If all of your qualifying games are digital, either PS5 model can use the digital upgrade route. Hardware selection does not change whether a particular title’s offer is free.
A complete troubleshooting checklist
Work through these checks in order when the upgrade will not appear, will not download or launches the wrong version:
- Confirm that the title has a PS5 upgrade offer, not merely PS5 backward compatibility.
- Confirm that a physical copy is being used with a PS5 that has a disc drive.
- For digital ownership, switch to the account that purchased the PS4 license.
- For a disc, verify that the disc country or region matches the account region.
- Insert the disc and open the game hub rather than launching the PS4 icon directly.
- Read the displayed price and any time limit; a changed offer may no longer be free.
- Allow the PS5 version to finish downloading and installing, including any required update.
- Keep the disc inserted during every session if the entitlement came from a disc.
- Use the Game Library version selector to choose PS5 when both builds are present.
If these checks do not resolve the issue, the remaining explanation is usually title-specific eligibility rather than a failed installation: the game may not support an upgrade in your region, the promotion may have ended, or the copy may be excluded by its purchase method.
