To install MySQL on Windows 10, download the official MySQL Installer MSI, confirm that Windows is 64-bit, install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2019 Redistributable if it is missing, and run MySQL Configurator after the files are copied. Choose Developer Default for a workstation that needs MySQL Server and development tools, Server Only for a minimal database machine, or Custom to select individual products. Configuration creates the initial account, writes the server settings, and can register MySQL as a Windows service that starts with Windows. MySQL’s current Windows builds are 64-bit only, so a 32-bit Windows 10 installation cannot run the current server package.
What should you check before downloading MySQL?
Check the computer architecture, required runtime, and Windows support status before launching setup. These checks prevent the most common installation failures.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Confirm 64-bit Windows. MySQL is available for Microsoft Windows 64-bit operating systems only. A 32-bit Windows 10 system is not compatible with the current Windows server builds.
- Install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2019 Redistributable. MySQL documents this runtime as a prerequisite. If it is already installed, the installer’s requirements check should pass without another copy.
- Verify Windows 10 support for the release you plan to use. The current supported-platforms matrix uses a latest-two-Windows-releases policy rather than naming every older release. Check that matrix and the release-specific requirements before committing to an older Windows 10 edition or a particular MySQL version.
- Use an account that can install software and change Windows services. Configuration may register a service and write protected program and data locations, so a standard account without elevation can stop the process before it finishes.
If the prerequisites check reports a missing runtime, install the required Microsoft package, restart the installer, and run the check again. Do not attempt to work around a failed runtime check by copying DLL files into the MySQL directory.
Which MySQL package should you choose for Windows 10?
The MSI-based MySQL Installer is the simplest choice for most Windows users because it installs products and provides the configuration workflow. The other packages are useful when download size, offline deployment, or manual control matters more than automation.

| Package | What it provides | Internet and setup characteristics | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSI/Installer | Product installation plus MySQL Configurator | Guided installation with product selection and post-install configuration | Most first-time Windows installations |
| Web Installer | The installer program and selected product downloads | Smaller initial download; requires internet access while setup fetches products | Connected PCs where a small download is preferred |
| Full Installer | A larger bundle containing product payloads | Useful when repeated downloads are undesirable and an offline-capable bundle is needed | Offline or multi-machine installation planning |
| ZIP archive | MySQL files that you unpack yourself | More control over the destination, but more configuration work remains with the administrator | Administrators who need a custom directory or manual service setup |
The Web and Full variants are installer packaging choices, not different database engines. They install the same selected MySQL products; the practical difference is whether setup downloads payloads or already has them available.
How do you download the official MySQL Installer?
Use the official MySQL downloads area and select the Windows MSI/Installer. The MSI is the documented recommended route for a normal Windows installation.
- Open the official MySQL downloads page and locate the Windows MySQL Installer package.
- Choose the Web Installer when the target computer has reliable internet access during setup. Choose the Full Installer when you need the product payloads available without repeated downloads.
- Save the MSI locally rather than launching it from a temporary browser location. Keeping the file makes it easier to rerun setup after installing a prerequisite.
- Before opening it, confirm that the Visual C++ 2019 Redistributable requirement is satisfied and that the computer is running 64-bit Windows.
The installer may offer more than one download size. Select based on connectivity and deployment needs, not on server performance: the package format does not change how MySQL executes queries after installation.
How do you install MySQL Server with MySQL Installer?
Start the MSI with software-installation and service-management permissions, choose a setup type, let the installer copy the selected products, and then continue immediately into MySQL Configurator. Copying files alone does not produce a running server.
1. Start setup and pass the requirements check
Open the downloaded MSI and allow Windows to elevate it if prompted. The installer checks prerequisites and may identify the Visual C++ runtime as missing. Install that runtime, return to the MSI, and rerun the check rather than proceeding with an incomplete environment.
2. Select the setup type
The setup-type screen controls which products are installed:
- Developer Default installs MySQL Server and development tools such as MySQL Workbench. Select it for a learning, application-development, or SQL practice computer.
- Server Only installs the database server without the broader development-tool selection. It is appropriate for a minimal database host or a machine administered remotely.
- Custom lets you choose individual products and versions. Use it when you need a precise combination, such as the server plus selected utilities but not every desktop tool.
You can change the product selection during setup, but the choice affects download size and the components available immediately after installation. If you expect to use a graphical SQL editor, include Workbench now or plan to install its standalone MSI later.
3. Let the MSI install the selected products
Accept the destination choices unless your organization requires a different layout. A default MSI installation places program files under C:Program FilesMySQLMySQL Server <version>. The installer can also place related products, such as Workbench, alongside the server components.

The Web package downloads each selected product during this stage. The Full package uses payloads already contained in the larger download, which is useful on machines that cannot repeatedly reach the internet. Wait for every selected product to report completion before closing the installer.
How do you configure MySQL Server after installation?
Run MySQL Configurator as the next stage of the MSI workflow. The server does not start until configuration is completed, so an installation that appears successful but refuses connections is often simply unfinished.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Create the initial account
Follow the Configurator prompts to create the initial MySQL account credentials. Record the account name and password in a password manager or another secure location; you will need them for Workbench and command-line connections. Use a password that meets the requirements shown by the configurator and avoid storing it in a script or plain-text note.
Write the server configuration
Configurator writes the server’s configuration based on the choices you make. Let it complete this step before testing a client connection. If you cancel before configuration is committed, the program files can be present while the server remains uninitialized and stopped.
Register the Windows service
Choose Windows-service startup when the computer should run MySQL automatically after boot. Registering the service allows normal Windows service controls and means you do not have to launch the server manually after every restart. If the computer is only used for occasional testing, you can choose a different startup behavior and start it when needed, but the service option is the practical default for a local development machine.
Finish and note the installation details
When Configurator reports completion, note the selected server version, the service registration, and the program directory. These details matter if you later need to locate the bin directory, inspect logs, or select the correct installation when more than one version exists.

Workbench is optional. It supplies a graphical SQL editor and administration interface, while MySQL Server is the database engine that stores data and accepts connections.
If you selected Developer Default, Workbench is included in that product set. You can also add it through MySQL Installer after the server is installed, or use the standalone Windows MSI described in the official Workbench documentation.

Workbench has its own Windows prerequisites: Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 and the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable. The server prerequisite is documented separately as the Visual C++ 2019 Redistributable, so a computer that passes the server check can still require an additional Workbench dependency check.
After installation, open Workbench and create a local connection using the account and password created by Configurator. Select the local MySQL service and use the connection settings shown by the setup prompts rather than guessing credentials.

How do you verify that the server accepts connections?
Test with Workbench or the command-line client immediately after configuration. A successful connection confirms that the server is configured, running, and reachable by a client.
Test with Workbench
- Open MySQL Workbench from the Windows Start menu.
- Create or open a local MySQL connection.
- Enter the account credentials created by Configurator.
- Connect and run a simple statement such as
SELECT VERSION();in the SQL editor.
The result should show the server version returned by the local instance. If Workbench opens but the connection fails, treat that as a server, service, credential, or prerequisite issue rather than as proof that the Workbench installation itself is broken.
Test with the command-line client
The installed bin directory contains MySQL client and utility programs. Open Command Prompt and run the client from that directory, or add the correct versioned bin directory to the Windows PATH. A typical login command is:
mysql -u <account> -p
Replace <account> with the account created during configuration. The client then prompts for the password instead of exposing it in the command history. Once connected, run SELECT VERSION(); and exit with quit.

The default MSI layout separates executable files from machine-wide data. Program files are placed under C:Program FilesMySQLMySQL Server <version>. Logs and databases are placed under %PROGRAMDATA%MySQLMySQL Server <version>.
Use the versioned directory that actually exists on the computer when setting PATH or diagnosing a service. Do not point a command prompt at a generic folder if another MySQL version is installed beside it. The bin directory inside the program installation contains the server executable, client, and utility programs.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you troubleshoot a failed MySQL installation?
Use the symptom to identify whether the failure is a prerequisite problem, incomplete configuration, an incorrect path, or an unverified Windows-support issue.
The installer reports a missing runtime
Install the required Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and rerun the installer’s requirements check. Workbench may additionally require the Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable and .NET Framework 4.5.2. Installing a runtime for the wrong architecture will not satisfy a 64-bit MySQL installation.
The server appears installed but will not accept connections
Run MySQL Configurator. MySQL’s installation guide states that the server does not start until configuration is complete. Finish account creation and configuration, select Windows-service startup if appropriate, and then retry the Workbench or command-line connection.

The command prompt says “mysql is not recognized”
Change to the installed version’s bin directory and run the client there, or add that directory to PATH. Check the exact folder under C:Program FilesMySQLMySQL Server <version>; a PATH entry pointing to an older or different version will not find the intended executable.
The service is not running after a reboot
Reopen the Windows service controls and check whether Configurator registered MySQL as a service with automatic startup. If you did not select service startup, launch the server according to the configuration you chose or rerun Configurator to apply the service setting.

You are unsure whether Windows 10 is supported
Consult the current MySQL supported-platforms matrix and the requirements for the exact MySQL release. Because the matrix describes support as the latest two Windows releases, compatibility can change even when the installer file still downloads successfully.
Can you use the ZIP archive instead of MySQL Installer?
Yes, but the ZIP archive is intended for administrators who want control over the installation directory and are comfortable completing more setup manually. You unpack it to a location such as C:mysql, configure the server, arrange the service behavior if required, and make the client utilities available through the chosen path.

What is the safest installation sequence?
- Confirm 64-bit Windows and check Windows 10 support for the selected MySQL release.
- Install or verify the Microsoft Visual C++ 2019 Redistributable.
- Download the official Windows MSI/Installer.
- Choose Web or Full packaging according to internet and offline requirements.
- Select Developer Default, Server Only, or Custom.
- Allow the MSI to finish installing every selected product.
- Run MySQL Configurator immediately.
- Create and securely record the initial account credentials.
- Register a Windows service if the server should start with Windows.
- Connect with Workbench or the client in the versioned
bindirectory and run a test query.
This order matters: installing client software before the server is configured does not make the server available, and setting PATH before you know which versioned directory was installed can point commands at the wrong files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install MySQL Workbench without installing MySQL Server?
Yes. Workbench is available through MySQL Installer or as a standalone Windows MSI, so it can be installed separately. It still needs a running MySQL Server instance—local or remote—to execute SQL and display database administration information.
Is the Web Installer a different edition of MySQL?
No. It is a smaller bootstrap package that downloads the products you select during setup. The Full Installer carries the product payloads in a larger bundle, while the installed server products are otherwise selected through the same installer workflow.
Which package is better for installing on an offline computer?
Use the Full Installer when the computer cannot reliably download products during setup. Its larger bundle is designed to keep the required payloads available, reducing the need for repeated internet downloads.
Why does a 32-bit Windows 10 computer reject the current installer?
Current MySQL Windows server builds support 64-bit Windows only. A 32-bit installation therefore cannot satisfy the platform requirement, regardless of whether the processor itself is capable of 64-bit operation.
